    Entanglement Measures for Intermediate Separability of Quantum States

    We present a family of entanglement measures R_m which act as indicators for separability of n-qubit quantum states into m subsystems for arbitrary 2 \leq m \leq n. The measure R_m vanishes if the state is separable into m subsystems, and for m = n it gives the Meyer-Wallach measure while for m = 2 it reduces, in effect, to the one introduced recently by Love et al. The measures R_m are evaluated explicitly for the GHZ state and the W state (and its modifications, the W_k states) to show that these globally entangled states exhibit rather distinct behaviors under the measures, indicating the utility of the measures R_m for characterizing globally entangled states as well.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Influence of pH, competing ions, and salinity on the sorption of strontium and cobalt onto biogenic hydroxyapatite

    Anthropogenic radionuclides contaminate a range of environments as a result of nuclear activities, for example, leakage from waste storage tanks/ponds (e.g. Hanford, USA or Sellafield sites, UK) or as a result of large scale nuclear accidents (e.g. Chernobyl, Ukraine or Fukushima, Japan). One of the most widely applied remediation techniques for contaminated waters is the use of sorbent materials (e.g. zeolites and apatites). However, a key problem at nuclear contaminated sites is the remediation of radionuclides from complex chemical environments. In this study, biogenic hydroxyapatite (BHAP) produced by Serratia sp. bacteria was investigated for its potential to remediate surrogate radionuclides (Sr2+ and Co2+) from environmentally relevant waters by varying pH, salinity and the type and concentration of cations present. The sorption capacity of the BHAP for both Sr2+ and Co2+ was higher than for a synthetically produced hydroxyapatite (HAP) in the solutions tested. BHAP also compared favorably against a natural zeolite (as used in industrial decontamination) for Sr 2+ and Co 2+ uptake from saline waters. Results confirm that hydroxyapatite minerals of high surface area and amorphous calcium phosphate content, typical for biogenic sources, are suitable restoration or reactive barrier materials for the remediation of complex contaminated environments or wastewaters

    Characterization and Improvement of the Image Quality of the Data Taken with the Infrared Camera (IRC) Mid-Infrared Channels onboard AKARI

    Mid-infrared images frequently suffer artifacts and extended point spread functions (PSFs). We investigate the characteristics of the artifacts and the PSFs in images obtained with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI at four mid-infrared bands of the S7 (7{\mu}m), S11 (11{\mu}m), L15 (15{\mu}m), and L24 (24 {\mu}m). Removal of the artifacts significantly improves the reliability of the ref- erence data for flat-fielding at the L15 and L24 bands. A set of models of the IRC PSFs is also constructed from on-orbit data. These PSFs have extended components that come from diffraction and scattering within the detector arrays. We estimate the aperture correction factors for point sources and the surface brightness correction factors for diffuse sources. We conclude that the surface brightness correction factors range from 0.95 to 0.8, taking account of the extended component of the PSFs. To correct for the extended PSF effects for the study of faint structures, we also develop an image reconstruction method, which consists of the deconvolution with the PSF and the convolution with an appropriate Gaussian. The appropriate removal of the artifacts, improved flat-fielding, and image reconstruction with the extended PSFs enable us to investigate de- tailed structures of extended sources in IRC mid-infrared images.Comment: 35 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

    The effect of population density on shoot morphology of herbs in relation to light capture by leaves

    Plants change their shapes, depending on their environment, for example, plant height increases with increasing population density. We examined the density-dependent plasticity in shoot morphology of herbs by analysing a mathematical model which identifies a number of key factors that influence shoot morphology, namely (i) solar radiation captured by leaves; (ii) shading from neighbouring plants; and (iii) utilisation efficiency of resource by leaves, stems and veins. An optimisation theory was used to obtain optimal shoot morphology in relation to maximal light capture by leaves, under trade-offs of resource partition among organs. We first evaluated the solar radiation flux per unit leaf area per day for different shoot forms. Our model predicts that the optimal internodal length of the stem that brings about the maximal light capture by leaves increases with plant population density, and this is consistent with experimental data. Moreover, our simple model can also be extended to explain the morphological plasticity in other herbs (i.e. stemless plants) that are different from our model plants with a stem. These findings illustrate how optimisation theory can be used for the analysis of plasticity in shoot morphology of plants in response to environmental changes, as well as the analysis of diversity in morphology

    Central Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Signaling via Brainstem Catecholamine Neurons Counteracts Hypertension in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

    Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists, widely used to treat type 2 diabetes, reduce blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive patients. Whether this action involves central mechanisms is unknown. We here report that repeated lateral ventricular (LV) injection of GLP-1R agonist, liraglutide, once daily for 15 days counteracted the development of hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In parallel, it suppressed urinary norepinephrine excretion, and induced c-Fos expressions in the area postrema (AP) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) of brainstem including the NTS neurons immunoreactive to dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH). Acute administration of liraglutide into fourth ventricle, the area with easy access to the AP and NTS, transiently decreased BP in SHR and this effect was attenuated after lesion of NTS DBH neurons with anti-DBH conjugated to saporin (anti-DBH-SAP). In anti-DBH-SAP injected SHR, the antihypertensive effect of repeated LV injection of liraglutide for 14 days was also attenuated. These findings demonstrate that the central GLP-1R signaling via NTS DBH neurons counteracts the development of hypertension in SHR, accompanied by attenuated sympathetic nerve activity

    Selective activation of primary afferent fibers evaluated by sine-wave electrical stimulation

    Transcutaneous sine-wave stimuli at frequencies of 2000, 250 and 5 Hz (Neurometer) are thought to selectively activate Aβ, Aδ and C afferent fibers, respectively. However, there are few reports to test the selectivity of these stimuli at the cellular level. In the present study, we analyzed action potentials (APs) generated by sine-wave stimuli applied to the dorsal root in acutely isolated rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) preparations using intracellular recordings. We also measured excitatory synaptic responses evoked by transcutaneous stimuli in substantia gelatinosa (SG) neurons of the spinal dorsal horn, which receive inputs predominantly from C and Aδ fibers, using in vivo patch-clamp recordings. In behavioral studies, escape or vocalization behavior of rats was observed with both 250 and 5 Hz stimuli at intensity of ~0.8 mA (T5/ T250), whereas with 2000 Hz stimulation, much higher intensity (2.14 mA, T2000) was required. In DRG neurons, APs were generated at T5/T250 by 2000 Hz stimulation in Aβ, by 250 Hz stimulation both in Aβ and Aδ, and by 5 Hz stimulation in all three classes of DRG neurons. However, the AP frequencies elicited in Aβ and Aδ by 5 Hz stimulation were much less than those reported previously in physiological condition. With in vivo experiments large amplitude of EPSCs in SG neurons were elicited by 250 and 5 Hz stimuli at T5/ T250. These results suggest that 2000 Hz stimulation excites selectively Aβ fibers and 5 Hz stimulation activates noxious transmission mediated mainly through C fibers. Although 250 Hz stimulation activates both Aδ and Aβ fibers, tactile sensation would not be perceived when painful sensation is produced at the same time. Therefore, 250 Hz was effective stimulus frequency for activation of Aδ fibers initiating noxious sensation. Thus, the transcutaneous sine-wave stimulation can be applied to evaluate functional changes of sensory transmission by comparing thresholds with the three stimulus frequencies

    A Key Role for Old Yellow Enzyme in the Metabolism of Drugs by Trypanosoma cruzi

    Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiological agent of Chagas' disease. So far, first choice anti-chagasic drugs in use have been shown to have undesirable side effects in addition to the emergence of parasite resistance and the lack of prospect for vaccine against T. cruzi infection. Thus, the isolation and characterization of molecules essential in parasite metabolism of the anti-chagasic drugs are fundamental for the development of new strategies for rational drug design and/or the improvement of the current chemotherapy. While searching for a prostaglandin (PG) F2α synthase homologue, we have identified a novel “old yellow enzyme” from T. cruzi (TcOYE), cloned its cDNA, and overexpressed the recombinant enzyme. Here, we show that TcOYE reduced 9,11-endoperoxide PGH2 to PGF2α as well as a variety of trypanocidal drugs. By electron spin resonance experiments, we found that TcOYE specifically catalyzed one-electron reduction of menadione and β-lapachone to semiquinone-free radicals with concomitant generation of superoxide radical anions, while catalyzing solely the two-electron reduction of nifurtimox and 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide drugs without free radical production. Interestingly, immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that anti-TcOYE polyclonal antibody abolished major reductase activities of the lysates toward these drugs, identifying TcOYE as a key drug-metabolizing enzyme by which quinone drugs have their mechanism of action

    Effects of the K+π+ννˉK^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu} and of other processes on the mixing hierarchies in the four-generation model

    We analyze in the four-generation model the first measurement of the branching ratio of rare kaon decay K+π+νnuˉK^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{nu}, along with the other processes of KLKSK_L-K_S mass difference ΔmK\Delta m_K, CP-violating parameter ϵK,BdBdˉ\epsilon_K, B_d-\bar{B_d} mixing, BsBsˉB_s-\bar{B_s} mixing, B(KLμμˉ)B(K_L\to\mu\bar{\mu}), and the upper bound values of D0D0ˉD^0-\bar{D^0} mixing and B(KLπ0ννˉ)B(K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}), and try to search for mixing of the fourth generation in the hierarchical mixing scheme of the Wolfenstein parametrization. Using the results for the mixing of the fourth generation, we discuss predictions of the D0D0ˉD^0-\bar{D^0} mixing (ΔmD\Delta m_D) and the branching ratio of directly CP-violating decay process KLπ0ννˉK_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}, and the effects on the CP asymmetry in neutral B meson decays and the unitarity triangle.Comment: 29 pages written in LaTex. 6 figures(drawn on LaTeX).     Preoperative risk stratification of lymph node metastasis for non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm: An international dual-institutional study

    BACKGROUND: /Objectives: Although the presence of lymph node metastasis (LNM) defines malignant potential, preoperative prediction of LNM has not been established for non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (NF-PNEN). We sought to develop a prediction system using only preoperatively available factors that would stratify the risk of LNM for NF-PNEN. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent R0/1 resection of NF-PNEN at Kyoto University (2007-2019) and the University of California, San Francisco (2010-2019). Risk stratification of LNM was developed using preoperative factors by the logistic regression analysis. Long-term outcomes were compared across the risk groups. RESULTS: A total of 131 patients were included in this study. Lymph nodes were pathologically examined in 116 patients, 23 (20%) of whom had LNM. Radiological tumor size [1.5-3.5 cm (odds ratio: 13.5, 95% confidence interval: 1.77-398) and >3.5 cm (72.4, 9.06-2257) against ≤1.5 cm], <50% cystic component (8.46 × 10^6, 1.68 × 10^106-), and dilatation of main pancreatic duct ≥5 mm (31.2, 3.94-702) were independently associated with LNM. When patients were classified as the low-risk (43 patients), intermediate-risk (44 patients), and high-risk groups (29 patients), proportions of LNM differed significantly across the groups (0%, 14%, and 59%, respectively). Recurrence-free survival (RFS) of the low- and intermediate-risk groups were significantly better than that of the high-risk group (5-year RFS rates of 92.2%, 85.4%, and 47.1%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The prediction system using preoperative radiological factors stratifies the risk of LNM for NF-PNEN. This stratification helps to predict malignant potential and determine the surgical procedure and necessity of regional lymphadenectomy
