    Art for women’s sake: understanding feminist art therapy as didactic practice re-orientation

    Catalysed through the coming together of feminist theories that debate ‘the politics of difference’ and through a reflection on the practices of art psychotherapy this paper seeks to illuminate the progressive and empowering nature that creative applications have for better mental health. It also seeks to critically expose and evaluate some of the marginalisation work that is also done within art psychotherapy practices, ultimately proposing a developmental practice activity and resource hub that will raise awareness, challenge traditional ways of thinking and doing, and provide a foundation for more inclusive practices. This paper’s introduction is followed by a contextualisation of art therapy and third wave feminisms, with suggestion of how those can work together towards better praxis. The main discussion is the presentation of a newly developed practitioner activity and resource hub that art therapists can utilise to evaluate their current and on-going practice towards one of greater inclusivity and better reflexivity. Finally, in conclusion there will be a drawing together of what has been possible in feminist art psychotherapy, what is still possible, and with further alliances what could still yet be possible

    Exploring the benefits of intersectional feminist social justice approaches in art psychotherapy

    This paper charts a research and knowledge exchange project between a university and group of art psychotherapists who came together in a project aimed at better understanding the benefits of critical feminist social justice approaches to art psychotherapy. It outlines the impact of the partnership for art psychotherapy practice, practitioners’ continued professional development and patients’/ service users’ benefit. Drawing on knowledges of critical feminisms held within the university and art psychotherapy expertise from local health services, the project evaluated the benefit of a practice enhancement activity and resource hub as consciousness raising training in intersectional feminism for developing critical feminist social justice approaches to art psychotherapy practice. The project was designed as a qualitative participatory study. The four main salient themes emerging from the data were that the enhancement activity and resource hub provided; patient/ service user benefits, improved practitioner reflexive critical thinking; recognition from practitioners of the importance of being attentive to patient’s/ service users’ situatedness; and acknowledgement by practitioners of the helpfulness of likeminded collectives for sustaining critical feminist social justice praxis. Project findings suggest that critical feminist social justice approaches are beneficial to art psychotherapy praxis and that continued engagement with current and re-emerging feminisms could continue to progressively reimagine and reshape that praxis

    Astrophysical Insights into Radial Velocity Jitter from an Analysis of 600 Planet-search Stars

    Radial velocity (RV) detection of planets is hampered by astrophysical processes on the surfaces of stars that induce a stochastic signal, or "jitter," which can drown out or even mimic planetary signals. Here, we empirically and carefully measure the RV jitter of more than 600 stars from the California Planet Search sample on a star by star basis. As part of this process, we explore the activity–RV correlation of stellar cycles and include appendices listing every ostensibly companion-induced signal we removed and every activity cycle we noted. We then use precise stellar properties from Brewer et al. to separate the sample into bins of stellar mass and examine trends with activity and with evolutionary state. We find that RV jitter tracks stellar evolution and that in general, stars evolve through different stages of RV jitter: the jitter in younger stars is driven by magnetic activity, while the jitter in older stars is convectively driven and dominated by granulation and oscillations. We identify the "jitter minimum"—where activity-driven and convectively driven jitter have similar amplitudes—for stars between 0.7 and 1.7 M⊙ and find that more-massive stars reach this jitter minimum later in their lifetime, in the subgiant or even giant phases. Finally, we comment on how these results can inform future RV efforts, from prioritization of follow-up targets from transit surveys like TESS to target selection of future RV surveys

    Magnetic Flux Tube Reconnection: Tunneling Versus Slingshot

    The discrete nature of the solar magnetic field as it emerges into the corona through the photosphere indicates that it exists as isolated flux tubes in the convection zone, and will remain as discrete flux tubes in the corona until it collides and reconnects with other coronal fields. Collisions of these flux tubes will in general be three dimensional, and will often lead to reconnection, both rearranging the magnetic field topology in fundamental ways, and releasing magnetic energy. With the goal of better understanding these dynamics, we carry out a set of numerical experiments exploring fundamental characteristics of three dimensional magnetic flux tube reconnection. We first show that reconnecting flux tubes at opposite extremes of twist behave very differently: in some configurations, low twist tubes slingshot while high twist tubes tunnel. We then discuss a theory explaining these differences: by assuming helicity conservation during the reconnection one can show that at high twist, tunneled tubes reach a lower magnetic energy state than slingshot tubes, whereas at low twist the opposite holds. We test three predictions made by this theory. 1) We find that the level of twist at which the transition from slingshot to tunnel occurs is about two to three times higher than predicted on the basis of energetics and helicity conservation alone, probably because the dynamics of the reconnection play a large role as well. 2) We find that the tunnel occurs at all flux tube collision angles predicted by the theory. 3) We find that the amount of magnetic energy a slingshot or a tunnel reconnection releases agrees reasonably well with the theory, though at the high resistivities we have to use for numerical stability, a significant amount of magnetic energy is lost to diffusion, independent of reconnection.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Ap

    Two-body anticorrelation in a harmonically trapped ideal Bose gas

    We predict the existence of a dip below unity in the second-order coherence function of a partially condensed ideal Bose gas in harmonic confinement, signaling the anticorrelation of density fluctuations in the sample. The dip in the second-order coherence function is revealed in a canonical-ensemble calculation, corresponding to a system with fixed total number of particles. In a grand-canonical ensemble description, this dip is obscured by the occupation-number fluctuation catastrophe of the ideal Bose gas. The anticorrelation is most pronounced in highly anisotropic trap geometries containing small particle numbers.     The art pieces shown at the conference were informed by current and significant local, national and international contexts, including the continuing so called ‘migrant crisis’ and the effects of on-going financial cuts to mental health services (Foley, 2013; Mind, 2014); issues that the art psychotherapists see as points of struggle but that might otherwise be imagined and realised as opportunities, through radical praxis, for sustainable socially just futures. Summary of participatory content. Each artist provided a reflective piece of writing to accompany their art work included in the exhibition that briefly explained to viewers the thinking and rationale behind the work. Below is a sample of each artist’s contribution with title, media and reflective description of work. Art psychotherapists were available at the exhibition to discuss the art work and motivations behind it with conference participants, which enhanced the contributions of both parties

    A Krylov subspace algorithm for evaluating the phi-functions appearing in exponential integrators

    We develop an algorithm for computing the solution of a large system of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with polynomial inhomogeneity. This is equivalent to computing the action of a certain matrix function on the vector representing the initial condition. The matrix function is a linear combination of the matrix exponential and other functions related to the exponential (the so-called phi-functions). Such computations are the major computational burden in the implementation of exponential integrators, which can solve general ODEs. Our approach is to compute the action of the matrix function by constructing a Krylov subspace using Arnoldi or Lanczos iteration and projecting the function on this subspace. This is combined with time-stepping to prevent the Krylov subspace from growing too large. The algorithm is fully adaptive: it varies both the size of the time steps and the dimension of the Krylov subspace to reach the required accuracy. We implement this algorithm in the Matlab function phipm and we give instructions on how to obtain and use this function.
