    Effect of Thermal Annealing on Boron Diffusion, Micro-structural, Electrical and Magnetic properties of Laser Ablated CoFeB Thin Films

    We report on Boron diffusion and subsequent crystallization of Co40_{40}Fe40_{40}B20_{20} (CoFeB) thin films on SiO2_2/Si(001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy reveals Boron diffusion at the interface in both amorphous and crystalline phase of CoFeB. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals a small fraction of nano-crystallites embedded in the amorphous matrix of CoFeB. However, annealing at 400^\circC results in crystallization of CoFe with \textit{bcc} structure along (110) orientation. As-deposited films are non-metallic in nature with the coercivity (Hc_c) of 5Oe while the films annealed at 400^\circC are metallic with a Hc_c of 135Oe.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    ROLE OF AYURVEDIC DRUGS IN TREATING GERIATRIC DISORDERS AND IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE - A DEMONSTRATIVE PROJECT

    Present study is a demonstrative trial taken up with the aim of establishing the safety and efficacy of compound Ayurvedic drugs in geriatric people, who are institutionalised at old age home. Patients recruited under this study were suffering with minor to moderate ailments and given disease specific Ayurvedic medicines along with them one Rasayana drug like Ashvagandha/ Triphala/ Yashtimadhu/ Amalaki. Mini mental status examination (MMSE) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) tests were applied initially and after completion of six months to evaluate the efficacy of Ayurvedic drugs in treating the Geriatric problems and enhancing the quality of life on total 30 subjects recruited for this study. All the patients were undergone blood tests before and after treatment for their kidney and liver function tests.On analysis of MMSE, it is found that total 16 (53.34) cases were showed improvement; in the HARS – Psychic level, majority of cases showed improvement in all the parameters viz., anxiety, tension, fear, insomnia, intellectual and depression; similarly in the HARS-somatic level, showed improvement in all the parameters - General Somatic (muscular), General Somatic (sensory), cardio-vascular, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, genito-urinary and autonomic system symptoms. Blood markers of liver and kidney function were within normal limits in all patients before and after treatment. This indicates that the used Ayurvedic drugs are safe even in the geriatric people.

    Origin, distribution and systematics of culinary cucumber (Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis var. conomon)

    The non-dessert or culinary forms of C. melo are a distinct group distributed and adapted well essentially under humid tropics of Southern India. Culinary cucumber or vegetable cucumber (Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis var. conomon) belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, genus Cucumis, species melo, subspecies agrestis and variety conomon. In English, it is popularly called as Mangaluru cucumber, Oriental pickling melon, Japanese pickling melon, golden melon, culinary melon, Indian yellow cucumber, yellow cucumber, lemon cucumber, and so on. Although much of the information about culinary cucumber calls them cucumbers they are not cucumbers! They are actually a part of the so called “conomon” group of melons (Cucumis melo). Traditionally the conomon melons have been used in the Far East for pickling. Culinary cucumbers have a special feature that the fruits can be stored up to 8-10 months without losing their freshness. They can be stored for many weeks by hanging them from the ceiling, firmly bound by thin coconut fibre ropes. This ethnic vegetable is used for preparation of various culinary items. Even seeds are used for preparation of juice against dyspepsia. In this review article, the aspects about the family to which culinary cucumber belongs, genus Cucumis, origin and distribution of the genus Cucumis, domestication of melons (Cucumis melo), intraspecific classification of Cucumis melo, genetic diversity in melons, crossability among Cucumis species, and among Cucumis melo subspecies, origin and distribution of culinary cucumber, uses, nutritional value, medicinal properties, evaluation of germplasm, high yielding varieties, cultivation aspects, have been discussed. Understanding the evolutionary history and domestication process, increases the possibility for better exploiting the genetic diversity for cultivar development. Its storage trait can be transferred to muskmelon by adopting a suitable breeding method. The local landraces or varieties which are highly tolerant to high temperature, drought, pests and diseases in summer, can also be employed as a useful breeding material

The commonest causes of nasal obstruction in children are septal deviation and adenoid hypertrophy. Nasal septal deviation in children is usually due to some form of injury. Performing septoplasty alone in this age group without addressing adenoid may lead to recurrence of symptom i.e., nasal obstruction may lead to failure of procedure so we combine both procedures in single sitting.     Studies of Cholienrgic and Histaminergic drugs on melenophores of a teleost fish Rasbora elanga (Ham.)

    In the present study, it is observed that the acetylcholine show dispersal effect in isolated skin pigment melanophores of Rasbora elenga. The cholinergic blocking agent (atropine) decreases the dispersion rate of acetylcholine, while cholinergic receptors increase the rate of dispersion of acetylcholine. In the present investigation clearly indicated that acetylcholine is more govern the dispersion of skin pigment melanophores, while histamine induced the aggregation of melanophores in the fish scale.     The readily accessible α-chlorophosphonates (OCH2CMe2CH2O)P(O)CH(Cl)---C6H4-4-R [1: R=Me (a), OMe (b), Cl (c), H (d)] react with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde in the presence of NaH [Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction] to give good yields of ferrocenyl substituted chlorostilbenes. The novel bis ferrocenyl butadiene C5H5FeC5H4---CH=CH---C(CN)CHC5H4FeC5H5 (9) as well as the ferrocenyl 2-cyano-1,3-butadienes 4-R---C6H4---CH=CH---C(CN)=CHC5H4FeC5H5 [R=Me (10a), OMe (10b), Cl (10c)] have been obtained by using the new allylphosphonate (OCH2CMe2CH2O)P(O)CH2C(CN)=CHC5H4FeC5H5 (8); the latter compound was prepared in good yields by the reaction of the Baylis-Hillman adduct, C5H5FeC5H4CH(OH)C(CN)=CH2 (7), with the chlorophosphite (OCH2CMe2CH2O)PCl. The electrochemical behavior of the ferrocenyl compounds thus synthesized has been studied; two reversible one-electron processes are observed in the case of compound 9 suggesting a cooperative interaction between the two ferrocenyl residues

    Undrained Response and Liquefaction Behaviour of Non-Plastic Silty Sands Under Cyclic Loading

    The undrained response and liquefaction behaviour of fine sand and silty sands consisting of 30% and 50% non-plastic fines were investigated in the present study. The effect of consolidation stress level, cyclic stress amplitude and amount of non-plastic fines on soil liquefaction have been studied through a systematically planned stress controlled cyclic triaxial tests. To examine the effect of consolidation pressure on liquefaction behaviour, the sand-silt specimens were prepared at 40% relative density and consolidated at pressures of 50, 100 and 200 kPa. To investigate the effect of fines content on liquefaction resistance of sands at constant postconsolidation void ratio, the sand-silt specimens were prepared at different relative densities of 20, 40 and 70%. The cyclic loading with CSR in the range of 0.075 to 0.275 was applied at a frequency of 1Hz in different tests. Test results show the influence of the addition of non-plastic fines to the sand on the reduction of liquefaction resistance. Soil specimens had exhibited higher resistance to liquefaction at low consolidation pressures and lower resistance at high consolidation pressures
