The shear dynamo problem for small magnetic Reynolds numbers
We study large-scale dynamo action due to turbulence in the presence of a
linear shear flow, in the low conductivity limit. Our treatment is
nonperturbative in the shear strength and makes systematic use of both the
shearing coordinate transformation and the Galilean invariance of the linear
shear flow. The velocity fluctuations are assumed to have low magnetic Reynolds
number (Rm) but could have arbitrary fluid Reynolds number. The magnetic
fluctuations are determined to lowest order in Rm by explicit calculation of
the resistive Green's function for the linear shear flow. The mean
electromotive force is calculated and an integro-differential equation is
derived for the time evolution of the mean magnetic field. In this equation,
velocity fluctuations contribute to two different kinds of terms, the C and D
terms, in which first and second spatial derivatives of the mean magnetic
field, respectively, appear inside the spacetime integrals. The contribution of
the D terms is such that the time evolution of the cross-shear components of
the mean field do not depend on any other components excepting themselves.
Therefore, to lowest order in Rm but to all orders in the shear strength, the D
terms cannot give rise to a shear-current assisted dynamo effect. Casting the
integro-differential equation in Fourier space, we show that the normal modes
of the theory are a set of shearing waves, labelled by their sheared
wavevectors. The integral kernels are expressed in terms of the velocity
spectrum tensor, which is the fundamental quantity that needs to be specified
to complete the integro-differential equation description of the time evolution
of the mean magnetic field.Comment: Near-final version; Accepted for publication in the Journal of Fluid

Telecommunications infrastructure and economic growth: evidence from developing countries

economic growth, using data for developing countries. Using 3SLS, we estimate a system of equations
that endogenizes economic growth and telecom penetration. We find that the traditional economic
factors explain demand for mainline and mobile phones, even in developing countries. We find positive
impacts of mobile and landline phones on national output, when we control for the effects of capital and
labor. We discuss the associated policy implications related to improvement of telecom penetration in
developing countries.

Generation of large-scale magnetic fields due to fluctuating in shearing systems
We explore the growth of large-scale magnetic fields in a shear flow, due to
helicity fluctuations with a finite correlation time, through a study of the
Kraichnan-Moffatt model of zero-mean stochastic fluctuations of the
parameter of dynamo theory. We derive a linear integro-differential equation
for the evolution of large-scale magnetic field, using the first-order
smoothing approximation and the Galilean invariance of the -statistics.
This enables construction of a model that is non-perturbative in the shearing
rate and the -correlation time . After a brief review
of the salient features of the exactly solvable white-noise limit, we consider
the case of small but non-zero . When the large-scale magnetic
field varies slowly, the evolution is governed by a partial differential
equation. We present modal solutions and conditions for the exponential growth
rate of the large-scale magnetic field, whose drivers are the Kraichnan
diffusivity, Moffatt drift, Shear and a non-zero correlation time. Of
particular interest is dynamo action when the -fluctuations are weak;
i.e. when the Kraichnan diffusivity is positive. We show that in the absence of
Moffatt drift, shear does not give rise to growing solutions. But shear and
Moffatt drift acting together can drive large scale dynamo action with growth
rate .Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Accepted in Journal of Plasma Physic
R-Parity Violating Supersymmetry Explanation for Large t tbar Forward-Backward Asymmetry
We propose a supersymmetric explanation for the anomalously high forward
backward asymmetry in top pair production measured by CDF and D0. We suppose
that it is due to the t-channel exchange of a right-handed sbottom which
couples to d_R and t_R, as is present in the R-parity violating minimal
supersymmetric standard model. We show that all Tevatron and LHC experiments' t
tbar constraints may be respected for a sbottom mass between 300 and 1200 GeV,
and a large Yukawa coupling >2.2, yielding A_{FB} up to 0.18. The non Standard
Model contribution to the LHC charge asymmetry parameter is Delta
A_C^y=0.017-0.045, small enough to be consistent with current measurements but
non-zero and positive, allowing for LHC confirmation in the future within 20
fb^-1. A small additional contribution to the LHC t tbar production
cross-section is also predicted, allowing a further test. We estimate that 10
fb^-1 of LHC luminosity would be sufficient to rule out the proposal to 95%
confidence level, if the measurements of the t tbar cross-section turn out to
be centred on the Standard Model prediction.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, v2 has added comments and references and

Investigating the Supersymmetric Explanation of Anomalous CDF lepton(s) photon(s) Missing-E_T Events
The recent excess over the Standard Model prediction in the \mu \gamma
missing-E_T channel reported by CDF can be well-explained by resonant smuon
production with a single dominant R-parity violating coupling \lambda'_{211},
in the context of models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric
particle. The slepton decays to the lightest neutralino and a muon followed by
neutralino decaying to a gravitino and photon. The kinematical distributions
are fitted well by our hypothesis and we use them to constrain the available
parameter space. The model also provides an explanation for the ee\gamma\gamma
missing-E_T event observed in Run I of the Tevatron by the CDF experiment. Our
model predicts an excess of between 5 and 35 events in a \gamma missing-E_T
channel at Run I. We provide predictions for signatures expected by the model
at Run II.Comment: 23 pages, Latex file + 10 figures and 4 Tables (included) Includes

Response to sub-threshold stimulus is enhanced by spatially heterogeneous activity
Sub-threshold stimuli cannot initiate excitations in active media, but
surprisingly as we show in this paper, they can alter the time-evolution of
spatially heterogeneous activity by modifying the recovery dynamics. This
results in significant reduction of waveback velocity which may lead to spatial
coherence, terminating all activity in the medium including spatiotemporal
chaos. We analytically derive model-independent conditions for which such
behavior can be observed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Oxygen production on Mars and the Moon
Significant progress was made in the area of in-situ oxygen production in the last year. In order to reduce sealing problems due to thermal expansion mismatch in the disk configuration, several all-Zirconia cells were constructed and are being tested. Two of these cells were run successfully for extended periods of time. One was run for over 200 hours and the other for over 800 hours. These extended runs, along with gas sample analysis, showed that the oxygen being produced is definitely from CO2 and not from air leaks or from the disk material. A new tube system is being constructed that is more rugged, portable, durable, and energy efficient. The important operating parameters of this system will be better controlled compared to previous systems. An electrochemical compressor will also be constructed with a similar configuration. The electrochemical compressor will use less energy since the feed stock is already heated in the separation unit. In addition, it does not have moving parts
Transport coefficients for the shear dynamo problem at small Reynolds numbers
We build on the formulation developed in Sridhar & Singh (JFM, 664, 265,
2010), and present a theory of the \emph{shear dynamo problem} for small
magnetic and fluid Reynolds numbers, but for arbitrary values of the shear
parameter. Specializing to the case of a mean magnetic field that is slowly
varying in time, explicit expressions for the transport coefficients,
and , are derived. We prove that, when the velocity
field is non helical, the transport coefficient vanishes. We then
consider forced, stochastic dynamics for the incompressible velocity field at
low Reynolds number. An exact, explicit solution for the velocity field is
derived, and the velocity spectrum tensor is calculated in terms of the
Galilean--invariant forcing statistics. We consider forcing statistics that is
non helical, isotropic and delta-correlated-in-time, and specialize to the case
when the mean-field is a function only of the spatial coordinate and time
; this reduction is necessary for comparison with the numerical
experiments of Brandenburg, R{\"a}dler, Rheinhardt & K\"apyl\"a (ApJ, 676, 740,
2008). Explicit expressions are derived for all four components of the magnetic
diffusivity tensor, . These are used to prove that the
shear-current effect cannot be responsible for dynamo action at small \re and
\rem, but for all values of the shear parameter.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures, Published in Physical Review
