Ki67 expression levels are a better marker of reduced melanoma growth following MEK inhibitor treatment than phospho-ERK levels
The loss of tumour phospho-extracellular responsive kinase (pERK) positivity is the major treatment biomarker for mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular responsive kinase (MEK) inhibitors. Here, we demonstrate that there is a poor correlation between pERK inhibition and the anti-proliferative effects of MEK inhibitors in melanoma cells. We suggest that Ki67 is a better biomarker for future clinical studies
KIC 4768731: a bright long-period roAp star in theKeplerfield
We report the identification of 61.45 dâ1 (711.2 ÎŒHz) oscillations, with amplitudes of 62.6 ÎŒmag, in KIC 4768731 (HD 225914) using Kepler photometry. This relatively bright (V = 9.17) chemically peculiar star with spectral type A5 Vp SrCr(Eu) has previously been found to exhibit rotational modulation with a period of 5.21 d. Fourier analysis reveals a simple dipole pulsator with an amplitude that has remained stable over a 4-yr time span, but with a frequency that is variable. Analysis of high-resolution spectra yields stellar parameters of Teff = 8100 ± 200 K, log g = 4.0 ± 0.2, [Fe/H] = +0.31 ± 0.24 and v sin i = 14.8 ± 1.6 km sâ1.
Line profile variations caused by rotation are also evident. Lines of Sr, Cr, Eu, Mg and Si are strongest when the star is brightest, while Y and Ba vary in antiphase with the other elements. The abundances of rare earth elements are only modestly enhanced compared to other roAp stars of similar Teff and log g. Radial velocities in the literature suggest a significant change over the past 30 yr, but the radial velocities presented here show no significant change over a period of 4 yr
Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 parsecs: The Northern Sample I
We have embarked on a project, under the aegis of the Nearby Stars (NStars)/
Space Interferometry Mission Preparatory Science Program to obtain spectra,
spectral types, and, where feasible, basic physical parameters for the 3600
dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 within 40 parsecs of the sun. In this
paper we report on the results of this project for the first 664 stars in the
northern hemisphere. These results include precise, homogeneous spectral types,
basic physical parameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity
and the overall metallicity, [M/H]) and measures of the chromospheric activity
of our program stars. Observed and derived data presented in this paper are
also available on the project's website at http://stellar.phys.appstate.edu/
Causal Anomalies in Kaluza-Klein Gravity Theories
Causal anomalies in two Kaluza-Klein gravity theories are examined,
particularly as to whether these theories permit solutions in which the
causality principle is violated. It is found that similarly to general
relativity the field equations of the space-time-mass Kaluza-Klein (STM-KK)
gravity theory do not exclude violation of causality of G\"odel type, whereas
the induced matter Kaluza-Klein (IM-KK) gravity rules out noncausal
G\"odel-type models. The induced matter version of general relativity is shown
to be an efficient therapy for causal anomalies that occurs in a wide class of
noncausal geometries. Perfect fluid and dust G\"odel-type solutions of the
STM-KK field equations are studied. It is shown that every G\"odel-type perfect
fluid solution is isometric to the unique dust solution of the STM-KK field
equations. The question as to whether 5-D G\"odel-type non-causal geometries
induce any physically acceptable 4-D energy-momentum tensor is also addressed.Comment: 16 page. LaTex file. To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys. A (1998
Self-directed growth of AlGaAs core-shell nanowires for visible light applications
Al(0.37)Ga(0.63)As nanowires (NWs) were grown in a molecular beam epitaxy
system on GaAs(111)B substrates. Micro-photoluminescence measurements and
energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated a core-shell structure and Al
composition gradient along the NW axis, producing a potential minimum for
carrier confinement. The core-shell structure formed during the growth as a
consequence of the different Al and Ga adatom diffusion lengths.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Cooler and bigger than thought? Planetary host stellar parameters from the InfraRed Flux Method
Effective temperatures and radii for 92 planet-hosting stars as determined
from the InfraRed Flux Method (IRFM) are presented and compared with those
given by other authors using different approaches. The IRFM temperatures we
have derived are systematically lower than those determined from the
spectroscopic condition of excitation equilibrium, the mean difference being as
large as 110 K. They are, however, consistent with previous IRFM studies and
with the colors derived from Kurucz and MARCS model atmospheres. Comparison
with direct measurements of stellar diameters for 7 dwarf stars, which
approximately cover the range of temperatures of the planet-hosting stars,
suggest that the IRFM radii and temperatures are reliable in an absolute scale.
A better understanding of the fundamental properties of the stars with planets
will be achieved once this discrepancy between the IRFM and the spectroscopic
temperature scales is resolved.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Functional and molecular characterisation of mammary side population cells
BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is thought to arise in mammary epithelial stem cells. However, the identity of these stem cells is unknown. METHODS: Studies in the haematopoetic and muscle systems show that stem cells have the ability to efflux the dye Hoechst 33342. Cells with this phenotype are referred to as the side population (SP). We have adapted the techniques from the haematopoetic and muscle systems to look for a mammary epithelial SP. RESULTS: Of mammary epithelial cells isolated from both the human and mouse mammary epithelia, 0.2â0.45% formed a distinct SP. The SP was relatively undifferentiated but grew as typical differentiated epithelial clones when cultured. Transplantation of murine SP cells at limiting dilution into cleared mammary fat pads generated epithelial ductal and lobuloalveolar structures. CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate the existence of an undifferentiated SP in human and murine mammary epithelium. Purified SP cells are a live single-cell population that retain the ability to differentiate in vitro and in vivo. Studies of haematopoetic cells have suggested that the SP phenotype constitutes a universal stem cell marker. This work therefore has implications for mammary stem cell biology
The Affine-Metric Quantum Gravity with Extra Local Symmetries
We discuss the role of additional local symmetries related to the
transformations of connection fields in the affine-metric theory of gravity.
The corresponding BRST transformations connected with all symmetries (general
coordinate, local Lorentz and extra) are constructed. It is shown, that extra
symmetries give the additional contribution to effective action which is
proportional to the corresponding Nielsen-Kallosh ghost one. Some arguments are
given, that there is no anomaly associated with extra local symmetries.Comment: 14 pages in LATEX (The version of paper accepted for publication in

Differential abundance analysis of Procyon and Ξ Sculptoris: Comparison with abundance patterns of solarâlike pairs
The precision differential abundance (PDA) technique is applied to the midâF stars Procyon and Ξ Scl using spectra from the ESO UVESPOP library. We relate PDA patterns to endogenous processes related to condensation or to exogenous processes connected to Galactic chemical evolution. We employ oneâdimensional LTE models, but emphasize the use of weaker lines (â€20 mĂ
) that are typically used in such studies. We compare our results with PDAs of solarâtype stars. Abundances and PDAs are determined for 28 elements: C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd. A plot of PDAs (Ξ Scl minus Procyon) versus Z shows a highly significant correlation. Moreover, local substructure of the plot for the elements CaâZn and neutronâaddition elements is similar to that which can be found for solar twins. Our PDA versus Z plot structural shows similarity to plots that can be made from the extensive work of Bedell et al. (2018). That PDA structure and substructure is clearly a function of age.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/154353/1/asna202013694.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/154353/2/asna202013694_am.pd
