Engineered bidirectional communication mediates a consensus in a microbial biofilm consortium
Microbial consortia form when multiple species colocalize and communally generate a function that none is capable of alone. Consortia abound in nature, and their cooperative metabolic activities influence everything from biodiversity in the global food chain to human weight gain. Here, we present an engineered consortium in which the microbial members communicate with each other and exhibit a āconsensusā gene expression response. Two colocalized populations of Escherichia coli converse bidirectionally by exchanging acyl-homoserine lactone signals. The consortium generates the gene-expression response if and only if both populations are present at sufficient cell densities. Because neither population can respond without the other's signal, this consensus function can be considered a logical AND gate in which the inputs are cell populations. The microbial consensus consortium operates in diverse growth modes, including in a biofilm, where it sustains its response for several days
AMPHIBIAN DISTRIBUTION IN THE GEORGIA SEA ISLANDS: IMPLICATIONS FROM THE PAST AND FOR THE FUTURE
We summarized amphibian distributions for 12 coastal islands in Georgia, USA. Occurrence among islands was correlated with life history traits, habitats, island size, distance to other islands, and island geological age. Speciesā distributions were determined from published literature. Island sizes and vegetation types were derived from 2011 Georgia Department of Natural Resources habitat maps, which included both federal and state vegetation classification systems. Species occurring on more islands tended to have greater total reproductive output (i.e., life span >4 years, and annual egg production >1,000 eggs) and adults had tolerance of brackish environs. Larger islands had greatĀer area of freshwater wetlands, predominantly short hydroperiod (<6 months). Species tied to long hydroperiod wetlands (>6 months) were more restricted in their distribution across islands. Overall, larger islands supported more species, but the correlation was weaker for geologically younger HoĀlocene islands (age <11,000 years). While Euclidean distance between islands does not necessarily preclude inter-island dispersal, inhospitable habitat for amphibians (brackish tidal marshes and creeks interspersed with wide rivers) suggests that inter-island dispersal is very limited. The paucity of recent occurrence data for amphibians in this dynamic coastal region, let alone standardized annual moniĀtoring data, hinders efforts to model speciesā vulnerability in a region susceptible to sea level rise and development pressure. The most common survey method, standardized amphibian vocal surveys, will detect Anuran reproductive efforts, but is unlikely to ascertain if breeding was successful or to detect salamanders. While it will not replace actual population data, consideration of critical life-history traits and breeding habitat availability can be used to direct management to support long-term species perĀsistence in changing environs. Even common amphibians in coastal conservation areas of Georgia are vulnerable to increasing population isolation caused by unsuitable habitat

FARM MACHINERY INVESTMENT AND THE TAX REFORM ACT OF 1986
The Tax Reform Act of 1986 significantly changed incentives for investing. This analysis specifically examines how changes in marginal tax rates, depreciation schedules, and the investment tax credit altered the cost of capital and net investment in agriculture. A stochastic coefficients econometric methodology is used to estimate an investment function which is then used to simulate the effects of tax reform. Bundling Equilibrium in Combinatorial auctions
This paper analyzes individually-rational ex post equilibrium in the VC
(Vickrey-Clarke) combinatorial auctions. If is a family of bundles of
goods, the organizer may restrict the participants by requiring them to submit
their bids only for bundles in . The -VC combinatorial auctions
(multi-good auctions) obtained in this way are known to be
individually-rational truth-telling mechanisms. In contrast, this paper deals
with non-restricted VC auctions, in which the buyers restrict themselves to
bids on bundles in , because it is rational for them to do so. That is,
it may be that when the buyers report their valuation of the bundles in
, they are in an equilibrium. We fully characterize those that
induce individually rational equilibrium in every VC auction, and we refer to
the associated equilibrium as a bundling equilibrium. The number of bundles in
represents the communication complexity of the equilibrium. A special
case of bundling equilibrium is partition-based equilibrium, in which
is a field, that is, it is generated by a partition. We analyze the tradeoff
between communication complexity and economic efficiency of bundling

Symmetry-surfing the moduli space of Kummer K3s.
A maximal subgroup of the Mathieu group M24 arises as the combined
holomorphic symplectic automorphism group of all Kummer surfaces whose Kaehler
class is induced from the underlying complex torus. As a subgroup of M24, this
group is the stabilizer group of an octad in the Golay code. To meaningfully
combine the symmetry groups of distinct Kummer surfaces, we introduce the
concepts of Niemeier markings and overarching maps between pairs of Kummer
surfaces. The latter induce a prescription for symmetry-surfing the moduli
space, while the former can be seen as a first step towards constructing a
vertex algebra that governs the elliptic genus of K3 in an M24-compatible
fashion. We thus argue that a geometric approach from K3 to Mathieu Moonshine
