    Cost-aware scheduling of deadline-constrained task workflows in public cloud environments

    Public cloud computing infrastructure offers resources on-demand, and makes it possible to develop applications that elastically scale when demand changes. This capacity can be used to schedule highly parallellizable task workflows, where individual tasks consist of many small steps. By dynamically scaling the number of virtual machines used, based on varying resource requirements of different steps, lower costs can be achieved, and workflows that would previously have been infeasible can be executed. In this paper, we describe how task workflows consisting of large numbers of distributable steps can be provisioned on public cloud infrastructure in a cost-efficient way, taking into account workflow deadlines. We formally define the problem, and describe an ILP-based algorithm and two heuristic algorithms to solve it. We simulate how the three algorithms perform when scheduling these task workflows on public cloud infrastructure, using the various instance types of the Amazon EC2 cloud, and we evaluate the achieved cost and execution speed of the three algorithms using two different task workflows based on a document processing application

    Initial results of finger imaging using Photoacoustic Computed Tomography

    We present a photoacoustic computed tomography investigation on a healthy human finger, to image blood vessels with a focus on vascularity across the interphalangeal joints. The cross-sectional images were acquired using an imager specifically developed for this purpose. The images show rich detail of the digital blood vessels with diameters between 100 Ī¼\mum and 1.5 mm in various orientations and at various depths. Different vascular layers in the skin including the subpapillary plexus could also be visualized. Acoustic reflections on the finger bone of photoacoustic signals from skin were visible in sequential slice images along the finger except at the location of the joint gaps. Not unexpectedly, the healthy synovial membrane at the joint gaps was not detected due to its small size and normal vascularization. Future research will concentrate on studying digits afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis to detect the inflamed synovium with its heightened vascularization, whose characteristics are potential markers for disease activity.Comment: 2 figure

    The neuroepithelial basement membrane serves as a boundary and a substrate for neuron migration in the zebrafish hindbrain

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The facial branchiomotor neurons of cranial nerve VII undergo a stereotyped tangential migration in the zebrafish hindbrain that provides an ideal system for examining the complex interactions between neurons and their environment that result in directed migration. Several studies have shown the importance of the planar cell polarity pathway in facial branchiomotor neuron migration but the role of apical-basal polarity has not been determined. Here we examine the role of the PAR-aPKC complex in forming the basal structures that guide facial branchiomotor neurons on an appropriate migratory path.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>High resolution timelapse imaging reveals that facial branchiomotor neurons begin their migration by moving slowly ventrally and posteriorly with their centrosomes oriented medially and then, upon contact with the Laminin-containing basement membrane at the rhombomere 4-rhombomere 5 boundary, speed up and reorient their centrosomes on the anterior-posterior axis. Disruption of the PAR-aPKC complex members aPKCĪ», aPKCĪ¶, and Pard6gb results in an ectopic ventral migration in which facial branchiomotor neurons escape from the hindbrain through holes in the Laminin-containing basement membrane. Mosaic analysis reveals that the requirement for aPKC is cell-nonautonomous, indicating that it is likely required in the surrounding polarized neuroepithelium rather than in facial motor neurons themselves. Ventral facial motor neuron ectopia can be phenocopied by mutation of <it>lamininĪ±1</it>, suggesting that it is defects in maintenance of the laminin-containing basement membrane that are the likely cause of ventral mismigration in aPKCĪ»+Ī¶ double morphants.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that the laminin-containing ventral basement membrane, dependent on the activity of the PAR-aPKC complex in the hindbrain neuroepithelium, is both a substrate for migration and a boundary that constrains facial branchiomotor neurons to the appropriate migratory path.</p

    Ciliate predation by nematodes in tidal flat sediments

    The present study investigates the possibility of a trophic link between ciliates and nematodes in fine sandy sediments of the Molenplaat intertidal flat (Schelde estuary, SW Netherlands). Grazing experiments were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, with ciliate species isolated from enrichment cultures and nematodes directly collected from the field. Significant reductions in ciliate numbers were found in the presence of the predatory nematode Enoploides longispiculosus, a prominent species (and genus) in fine to medium sandy sediments of the North Sea and adjacent estuaries. No such effects were found when ciliates were inoculated with a mix of mainly deposit-feeding nematodes from the same sampling site. Based on these results, ciliate predation by E. longispiculosus was tested for several benthic ciliate species and abundances, at a range of predator abundances and temperatures, and in the presence of alternative prey (in casu nematodes). E. longispiculosus was capable of significantly reducing densities of 5 out of 6 ciliate species offered as prey. Depending on the experimental conditions and the prey species, predation rates ranged from 0.19 to 10.8 ciliates predator-1 hour-1, corresponding to a biomass consumption of 0.001-0.33 Āµg C predator-1 day-1. An overall positive relation between available ciliate biomass and predation rate was found. Comparison of experimental data with field conditions suggests that a considerable part of the ciliate production in fine sandy sediments of the Molenplaat is likely to be consumed by E. longispiculosus, which largely dominates meiofaunal biomass there. Estimated carbon requirements for the predator and production estimates of ciliate and nematode prey at the study site, strongly suggest that ciliates are probably a far more important carbon source for E. longispiculosus than nematode prey, at least between late spring and autumn. This implies that carbon transfer from primary producers and bacteria to predatory nematodes may to a large extent be mediated through the microbial food web. In view of the generally high densities/biomasses of ciliates as well as predacious nematodes in fine sandy sediments, similar patterns are to be expected in many other estuarine and marine sediments

    Automatic Sentiment Analysis in On-line Text

    The growing stream of content placed on the Web provides a huge collection of textual resources. People share their experiences on-line, ventilate their opinions (and frustrations), or simply talk just about anything. The large amount of available data creates opportunities for automatic mining and analysis. The information we are interested in this paper, is how people feel about certain topics. We consider it as a classification task: their feelings can be positive, negative or neutral. A sentiment isn't always stated in a clear way in the text; it is often represented in subtle, complex ways. Besides direct expression of the user's feelings towards a certain topic, he or she can use a diverse range of other techniques to express his or her emotions. On top of that, authors may mix objective and subjective information about a topic, or write down thoughts about other topics than the one we are investigating. Lastly, the data gathered from the World Wide Web often contains a lot of noise. All of this makes the task of automatic recognition of the sentiment in on-line text more difficult. We will give an overview of various techniques used to tackle the problems in the domain of sentiment analysis, and add some of our own results
