Measurement of D^\pm Production in Deep Inelastic ep Scattering with the ZEUS Detector at HERA

    Get PDF
Charm production in deep inelastic ep scattering was measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb^{-1}. Charm quarks were identified by reconstructing D^{+} mesons in the D^{+} -\u3e K^{-} pi^{+} pi^{+} decay channel. Lifetime information was used to reduce combinatorial background substantially. Differential cross sections were measured in the kinematic region 5 \u3c Q^{2} \u3c 1000 GeV^{2}, 0.02 \u3c y \u3c 0.7, 1.5 \u3c p_{T}(D^{+}) \u3c 15 GeV and |eta(D^{+})| \u3c 1.6, where Q^{2} is the photon virtuality, y is the inelasticity, and p_{T}(D^{+}) and eta(D^{+}) are the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the D^{+} meson, respectively. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions are compared to the data. The charm contribution, F_{2}^{cc}, to the proton structure-function F_{2} was extracted

Social determinants of infectious diseases in diverse age groups in Varna region, Bulgaria

    Get PDF
During the first years as a member to the European Union the healthcare system of Republic of Bulgaria faced many challenges: declining demographic tendencies, poverty with notice ably expressed age dimensions and limited resources for health care. The aim of this study is to reveal some social determinants and risk factors in the vulnerable groups of elderly people and breast-fed infants with communicable diseases. Specially designed questionnaires were used to study the socioeconomic and other risk factors in patients over 60 years and mothers accompanying their infants with infectious diseases. Analyses of the demographic indicators of Varna region and disease incidence correspond to the trends of the national level. Infectious diseases most commonly observed among the aged population are shigelloses, salmonelloses and other gastroenterites, mediterranean spotted fever, lymeborreliosis, acute viral hepatitis and neuroinfections. Gastroenteritesin breast-fed infants are the most common cause for hospitalization. The risk factors influencing patients of 60+ suffering from infectious diseases are poverty, unhealthy and inadequate nutrition, smoking, alcohol consumption, insuf icient physical activity and high levels of stress. Socially significant in communicable diseases are the common terrain on which the infectious process takes place. Risk factors influencing infants with infectious diseases are similar and sometimes derived from the factors influencing the adult population. More detailed and wider span studies of the social determinants of comunicable diseases in Bulgaria are needed to estimate the situation in other risk groups.Scripta Scientifica Medica 2010;42(2):115-12

Quasar Parallax: a Method for Determining Direct Geometrical Distances to Quasars

We describe a novel method to determine direct geometrical distances to quasars that can measure the cosmological constant, Lambda, with minimal assumptions. This method is equivalent to geometric parallax, with the `standard length' being the size of the quasar broad emission line region (BELR) as determined from the light travel time measurements of reverberation mapping. The effect of non-zero Lambda on angular diameter is large, 40% at z=2, so mapping angular diameter distances vs. redshift will give Lambda with (relative) ease. In principle these measurements could be made in the UV, optical, near infrared or even X-ray bands. Interferometers with a resolution of 0.01mas are needed to measure the size of the BELR in z=2 quasars, which appear plausible given reasonable short term extrapolations of current technology.Comment: 13 pages, with 3 figures. Measurement of D^*\pm Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    Get PDF
The production of D∗± mesons in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for exchanged photon virtualities 5 \u3c Q2\u3c1000GeV2, using an integrated luminosity of 363 pb−1 with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Differential cross sectionshave been measured and compared to next-to-leading-order QC D calculations. The cross-sections are used to extract the charm contribution to the protonstructure functions, expressed in terms of the reduced charm cro ss section, σc̄cred. Theoretical calculations based on fits to inclusive HERA data are compared to the results

Hexavalent chromium removal by waste mycelium of Aspergillus awamori

    Get PDF
In this study, the Cr(VI) removal potential of waste mycelium from the industrial xylanase-producing strain Aspergillus awamori was evaluated. It was determined by FTIR analysis that amino groups from the major fungal wall constituents, chitin and chitosan, played a key role in the metal binding process. The effect of pH, initial ion concentration, temperature and amount of biomass on the removal was also studied. The removal efficiency increased with decreasing pH and increasing temperature and amount of biomass. The mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by A. awamori can be explained by a two-stage process involving an initial adsorption stage followed by a reducing stage. The removal process was described by a second-order polynomial and the optimal process parameters for attaining Rmax 94.4 % in 48 h were predicted, i.e., pH 1.5 and t = 40 °C. From both economic and ecological points of view, a promising possibility for the utilization of waste industrial mycelium of A. awamori as a low-cost Cr(VI) removal agent was proposed

Measurements of open charm production cross sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections sigma_red^{c\bar{c}} for charm production are obtained in the kinematic range of photon virtuality 2.
