Count Me In: The dimensions of social inclusion through culture and sport
This study was set up to examine claims made for the ability of cultural projects to promote social inclusion (cultural projects are here taken to include those incorporating sport, the arts, media, heritage and outdoor adventure). This was to be achieved primarily by collecting evidence from a sample of 14 projects selected from some 200 that had volunteered their services. The report to the governmentâs Social Exclusion Unit (SEU) from the Policy Action Team (PAT10) (1999)2 noted the potential. In his foreword, Chris Smith (then Secretary of State for the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS)) wrote: â⊠art and sport can not only make a valuable contribution to delivering key outcomes of lower long term unemployment, less crime, better health and better qualifications, but can also help to develop the individual pride, community spirit and capacity for responsibility that enable communities to run regeneration programmes themselvesâ. Similar statements have followed from other politicians, particularly in the recent Commons debate on sport and social exclusion (22/11/01), and again in the public health debate (13/12/01). However, the PAT 10 report also came to the same conclusion as previous commentators (e.g. Glyptis, 19893; Allison & Coalter, 19964; Long & Sanderson, 19985) that there is little âhardâ evidence of the social benefits that accrue

Contribution of cod liver oil-related nutrients (vitamins A, D, E and eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) to daily nutrient intake and their associations with plasma concentrations in the EPIC-Norfolk cohort
Total nutrient intake (TNI) is intake from food and supplements. This provides an assessment of nutrient adequacy and the prevalence of excessive intake, as well as the response with respect to biomarkers. Cod liver oil (CLO) is the most frequently consumed supplement in the UK, containing nutrients that might have varying influences on health. We calculated TNI for vitamins A, D and E, as well as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and assessed associations with the respective blood concentrations
On the Interpretation of Supernova Light Echo Profiles and Spectra
The light echo systems of historical supernovae in the Milky Way and local
group galaxies provide an unprecedented opportunity to reveal the effects of
asymmetry on observables, particularly optical spectra. Scattering dust at
different locations on the light echo ellipsoid witnesses the supernova from
different perspectives and the light consequently scattered towards Earth
preserves the shape of line profile variations introduced by asymmetries in the
supernova photosphere. However, the interpretation of supernova light echo
spectra to date has not involved a detailed consideration of the effects of
outburst duration and geometrical scattering modifications due to finite
scattering dust filament dimension, inclination, and image point-spread
function and spectrograph slit width. In this paper, we explore the
implications of these factors and present a framework for future resolved
supernova light echo spectra interpretation, and test it against Cas A and SN
1987A light echo spectra. We conclude that the full modeling of the dimensions
and orientation of the scattering dust using the observed light echoes at two
or more epochs is critical for the correct interpretation of light echo
spectra. Indeed, without doing so one might falsely conclude that differences

Comparison of Feedforward and Feedback Neural Network Architectures for Short Term Wind Speed Prediction
This paper compares three types of neural networks trained using particle swarm optimization (PSO) for use in the short term prediction of wind speed. The three types of neural networks compared are the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network, Elman recurrent neural network, and simultaneous recurrent neural network (SRN). Each network is trained and tested using meteorological data of one week measured at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory National Wind Technology Center near Boulder, CO. Results show that while the recurrent neural networks outperform the MLP in the best and average case with a lower overall mean squared error, the MLP performance is comparable. The better performance of the feedback architectures is also shown using the mean absolute relative error. While the SRN performance is superior, the increase in required training time for the SRN over the other networks may be a constraint, depending on the application
Contrived Vacuum Impedances in the Triplet Cryostat
The longitudinal vacuum conductance of cryostats housing standard dipoles and CQS magnet assemblies is such that one is able to use pressure differences between interconnects, created by external pumping, to resolve the location of He leaks into the cryostat to within one magnet interconnect. The large diameter of the RHIC triplet cryostat precludes exploiting its longitudinal conductance for the same purpose. Because of this, a baffle is being designed to partition the cryostat vacuum envelop, and thus add better resolution to the location of possible He leaks. The method is given for calculating the needed impedance of this baffle
