    Mechanisms in Adaptive Feedback Control: Photoisomerization in a Liquid

    The underlying mechanism for Adaptive Feedback Control in the experimental photoisomerization of NK88 in methanol is exposed theoretically. With given laboratory limitations on laser output, the complicated electric fields are shown to achieve their targets in qualitatively simple ways. Further, control over the cis population without laser limitations reveals an incoherent pump-dump scenario as the optimal isomerization strategy. In neither case are there substantial contributions from quantum multiple-path interference or from nuclear wavepacket coherence.     Macroscopic Resonant Tunneling in the Presence of Low Frequency Noise

    We develop a theory of macroscopic resonant tunneling of flux in a double-well potential in the presence of realistic flux noise with significant low-frequency component. The rate of incoherent flux tunneling between the wells exhibits resonant peaks, the shape and position of which reflect qualitative features of the noise, and can thus serve as a diagnostic tool for studying the low-frequency flux noise in SQUID qubits. We show, in particular, that the noise-induced renormalization of the first resonant peak provides direct information on the temperature of the noise source and the strength of its quantum component.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    BMSSM Implications for Cosmology

    The addition of non-renormalizable terms involving the Higgs fields to the MSSM (BMSSM) ameliorates the little hierarchy problem of the MSSM. We analyze in detail the two main cosmological issues affected by the BMSSM: dark matter and baryogenesis. The regions for which the relic abundance of the LSP is consistent with WMAP and collider constraints are identified, showing that the bulk region and other previously excluded regions are now permitted. Requiring vacuum stability limits the allowed regions. Based on a two-loop finite temperature effective potential analysis, we show that the electroweak phase transition can be sufficiently first order in regions that for the MSSM are incompatible with the LEP Higgs mass bound, including parameter values of \tan\beta \lsim 5, m_{\tilde{t}_{1}} > m_t, m_Q << TeV.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures.     Extending holographic LEED to ordered small unit cell superstructures

    Time-Resolved Measurement of a Charge Qubit

    We propose a scheme for monitoring coherent quantum dynamics with good time-resolution and low backaction, which relies on the response of the considered quantum system to high-frequency ac driving. An approximate analytical solution of the corresponding quantum master equation reveals that the phase of an outgoing signal, which can directly be measured in an experiment with lock-in technique, is proportional to the expectation value of a particular system observable. This result is corroborated by the numerical solution of the master equation for a charge qubit realized with a Cooper-pair box, where we focus on monitoring coherent oscillations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Drug resistant HIV: Behaviors and characteristics among Los Angeles men who have sex with men with new HIV diagnosis.

    Epidemiology of drug resistant HIV has focused on trends and less attention has been given to identification of factors, especially behaviors including substance use, in acquisition of drug-resistant HIV. From 2009 to 2012 The Metromates Study enrolled and followed for one year men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking testing for HIV in a community clinic in Los Angeles assessing those testing positive for acute and recent HIV infection. Behavioral data were collected via Computer-Assisted Self-Interview from 125 classified as newly HIV infected and 91 as chronically infected (newly HIV-diagnosed); specimens were available and viable for resistance testing for 154 of the 216 HIV positives with new diagnoses. In this community clinic we found prevalence of resistance among MSM with new HIV-diagnosis was 19.5% (n = 30/154) with no difference by recency of HIV infection. Sexual partnership characteristics were associated with resistance; those who reported transgendered sex partners had a higher prevalence of resistance as compared to those who did not report transgendered sex partners (40% vs. 17%; p value = 0.04), while those who reported having a main partner had a lower prevalence of drug resistance (12% vs. 24%; p value = 0.07). In multivariable analyses adjusting for HIV recency and antiviral use, reporting a main partner decreased odds [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 0.34; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.13-0.87], reporting a transgendered partnered increased odds (AOR = 3.37; 95% CI 0.95-12.43); and being African American increased odds of drug resistance (AOR = 5.63, 95%CI 1.41-22.38). This suggests African American MSM and TG individuals in Los Angeles represent pockets of exceptional risk that will require special approaches to prevention and care to enhance their own health and reduce their likelihood to support transmission of drug resistance in the US

    The Nt=6N_t=6 equation of state for two flavor QCD

    We improve the calculation of the equation of state for two flavor QCD by simulating on Nt=6N_t=6 lattices at appropriate values of the couplings for the deconfinement/chiral symmetry restoration crossover. For amq=0.0125am_q=0.0125 the energy density rises rapidly to approximately 1 GeV/fm3{\rm GeV/fm^3} just after the crossover(mπ/mρ0.4m_\pi/m_\rho\approx 0.4 at this point). Comparing with our previous result for Nt=4N_t=4~\cite{eos}, we find large finite NtN_t corrections as expected from free field theory on finite lattices.     Control of electron spin and orbital resonance in quantum dots through spin-orbit interactions

    Influence of resonant oscillating electromagnetic field on a single electron in coupled lateral quantum dots in the presence of phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence is investigated. Using symmetry arguments it is shown that spin and orbital resonance can be efficiently controlled by spin-orbit interactions. The control is possible due to the strong sensitivity of Rabi frequency to the dot configuration (orientation of the dot and a static magnetic field) as a result of the anisotropy of the spin-orbit interactions. The so called easy passage configuration is shown to be particularly suitable for magnetic manipulation of spin qubits, ensuring long spin relaxation time and protecting the spin qubit from electric field disturbances accompanying on-chip manipulations.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; v2: introduction and conclusions broadened, moderate structure and content change

    H-Band Spectroscopic Classification of OB Stars

    We present a new spectroscopic classification for OB stars based on H-band (1.5 micron to 1.8 micron) observations of a sample of stars with optical spectral types. Our initial sample of nine stars demonstrates that the combination of He I 1.7002 micron and H Brackett series absorption can be used to determine spectral types for stars between about O4 and B7 (to within about +/- 2 sub-types). We find that the Brackett series exhibits luminosity effects similar to the Balmer series for the B stars. This classification scheme will be useful in studies of optically obscured high mass star forming regions. In addition, we present spectra for the OB stars near 1.1 micron and 1.3 micron which may be of use in analyzing their atmospheres and winds.Comment: Accepted by AJ, 16 pages Latex (aastex4.0) including 4 figures and 2 tables.
