    Quantitative assessment of Earth’s radiation belt modeling

    The “Quantitative Assessment of Radiation Belt Modeling” focus group was in place at Geospace Environment Modeling from 2014 to 2018. The overarching goals of this focus group were to bring together the current state‐of‐the‐art models for the acceleration, transport, and loss processes in Earth's radiation belts; develop event‐specific and global inputs of wave, plasma, and magnetic field to drive these models; and combine all these components to achieve a quantitative assessment of radiation belt modeling by validating against contemporary radiation belt measurements. This article briefly reviews the current understanding of radiation belt dynamics and related modeling efforts, summarizes the activities and accomplishments of the focus group, and discusses future directions.Accepted manuscrip

    X-ray Localization of the Globular Cluster G1 with XMM-Newton

    We present an accurate X-ray position of the massive globular cluster G1 by using XMM-Newton and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The X-ray emission of G1 has been detected recently with XMM-Newton. There are two possibilities for the origin of the X-ray emission. It can be either due to accretion of the central intermediate-mass black hole, or by ordinary low-mass X-ray binaries. The precise location of the X-ray emission might distinguish between these two scenarios. By refining the astrometry of the XMM-Newton and HST data, we reduced the XMM-Newton error circle to 1.5". Despite the smaller error circle, the precision is not sufficient to distinguish an intermediate-mass black hole and luminous low-mass X-ray binaries.     XMM-Newton observations of the spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628)

    The face-on spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628) was observed by XMM on 2002 February 2. In total, 21 sources are found in the inner 5' from the nucleus (after rejection of a few sources associated to foreground stars). Hardness ratios suggest that about half of them belong to the galaxy. The higher-luminosity end of the luminosity function is fitted by a power-law of slope -0.8. This can be interpreted as evidence of ongoing star formation, in analogy with the distributions found in disks of other late-type galaxies. A comparison with previous Chandra observations reveals a new ultraluminous X-ray transient (L_x \~ 1.5 x 10^39 erg/s in the 0.3--8 keV band) about 4' North of the nucleus. We find another transient black-hole candidate (L_x ~ 5 x 10^38 erg/s) about 5' North-West of the nucleus. The UV and X-ray counterparts of SN 2002ap are also found in this XMM observation.Comment: submitted to ApJL.     A generalization of heterochromatic graphs

    In 2006, Suzuki, and Akbari & Alipour independently presented a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have a heterochromatic spanning tree, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we propose ff-chromatic graphs as a generalization of heterochromatic graphs. An edge-colored graph is ff-chromatic if each color cc appears on at most f(c)f(c) edges. We also present a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have an ff-chromatic spanning forest with exactly mm components. Moreover, using this criterion, we show that a gg-chromatic graph GG of order nn with ∣E(G)∣>(n−m2)|E(G)|>\binom{n-m}{2} has an ff-chromatic spanning forest with exactly mm (1≀m≀n−11 \le m \le n-1) components if g(c)â‰€âˆŁE(G)∣n−mf(c)g(c) \le \frac{|E(G)|}{n-m}f(c) for any color cc.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Quiescent X-Ray/Optical Counterparts of the Black Hole Transient H 1705-250

    We report the result of a new Chandra observation of the black hole X-ray transient H 1705-250 in quiescence. H 1705-250 was barely detected in the new 50 ks Chandra observation. With 5 detected counts, we estimate the source quiescent luminosity to be Lx~9.1e30 erg/s in the 0.5-10 keV band (adopting a distance of 8.6 kpc). This value is in line with the quiescent luminosities found among other black hole X-ray binaries with similar orbital periods. By using images taken with the Faulkes Telescope North, we derive a refined position of H 1705-250. We also present the long-term lightcurve of the optical counterpart from 2006 to 2012, and show evidence for variability in quiescence.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRA

    The short-chain fatty acid uptake fluxes by mice on a guar gum supplemented diet associate with amelioration of major biomarkers of the metabolic syndrome

    Studies with dietary supplementation of various types of fibers have shown beneficial effects on symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), the main products of intestinal bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber, have been suggested to play a key role. Whether the concentration of SCFAs or their metabolism drives these beneficial effects is not yet clear. In this study we investigated the SCFA concentrations and in vivo host uptake fluxes in the absence or presence of the dietary fiber guar gum. C57Bl/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with 0%, 5%, 7.5% or 10% of the fiber guar gum. To determine the effect on SCFA metabolism, C-13-labeled acetate, propionate or butyrate were infused into the cecum of mice for 6 h and the isotopic enrichment of cecal SCFAs was measured. The in vivo production, uptake and bacterial interconversion of acetate, propionate and butyrate were calculated by combining the data from the three infusion experiments in a single steady-state isotope model. Guar gum treatment decreased markers of the metabolic syndrome (body weight, adipose weight, triglycerides, glucose and insulin levels and HOMA-IR) in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, hepatic mRNA expression of genes involved in gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis decreased dose-dependently by guar gum treatment. Cecal SCFA concentrations were increased compared to the control group, but no differences were observed between the different guar gum doses. Thus, no significant correlation was found between cecal SCFA concentrations and metabolic markers. In contrast, in vivo SCFA uptake fluxes by the host correlated linearly with metabolic markers. We argue that in vivo SCFA fluxes, and not concentrations, govern the protection from the metabolic syndrome by dietary fibers

    Calibration and accuracy assessment of Leica ScanStation C10 terrestrial laser scanner

    Requirement of high accuracy data in surveying applications has made calibration procedure a standard routine for all surveying instruments. This is due to the assumption that all observed data are impaired with errors. Thus, this routine is also applicable to terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) to make it available for surveying purposes. There are two calibration approaches: (1) component, and (2) system calibration. With the intention to specifically identify the errors and accuracy of the Leica ScanStation C10 scanner, this study investigates component calibration. Three components of calibration were performed to identify the constant, scale error, accuracy of angular measurement and the effect of angular resolution for distance measurement. The first calibration has been processed using closed least square solutions and has yielded the values of constant (1.2 mm) and scale error (1.000008879). Using variance ratio test (F-Test), angles observation (horizontal and vertical) for Leica C10 scanner and Leica TM5100A theodolite have shown significance difference. This is because the accuracy of both sensors are not similar and these differences are 0.01 and 0.0075Âș for horizontal and vertical measurements, respectively. Investigation on the resolution setting for Leica C10 scanner has highlighted the drawback of the tilt-and-turn target. Using the highest resolution, Leica Cyclone software only able to recognize the tilt-and-turn target up to 10 m distance compare to 200 m for the black and white target
