Is Socrates Dead (in Mathematics)?: The Role of the Mathematics Teacher In Higher Education Now and for the Next Ten Years

Socratic questioning is an important tool of the mathematical trade for mathematicians and students alike. Simply turning the crank is not mathematics. Without the willingness and/or ability for Socratic thought new worlds of mathematics for the future may not be invented nor discovered. Therefore, future students of mathematics need not only be taught to learn from the past but to question toward the future as well. Consequently, the teacher of mathematics must fill a dual role: a) that of purveyor of facts and methods for the application of those already established structures that comprise mathematical thought and b) that of instructor in detective-ability

Incorporating Graphing Calculators Into the Art and Science of Teaching Statistics and Decision Mathematics

The main paper purpose was to present curriculum appropriateness for requiring student use of either the TI-82 or TI-83 (Tl-82/83) in Elementary Statistics and Decision Mathematics. An Embry-Riddle student in either course formulates problems, carries out ensuing calculations, and interprets results. More high-level studies could be pursued and accomplished if intervening calculations were not as inordinately time consuming as they are for students who use only minimal-type calculators. A further purpose was to present possibilities for use of graphing calculators without resorting to user-created programs. The TI-82/83 has features which are applicable in areas of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics taught in elementary statistics courses. In creating frequency tables, sorting data, calculating one-variable statistics, drawing histograms, and making box plots the TI-82/83 is appropriate. Procedures for making inferences about a population are taught in inferential statistics. TI-82/83 has features which are beneficial for students to use in computations necessary in carrying out hypothesis testing, generating confidence intervals, and calculating linear regression coefficients. Applicable technology, which will improve the quality of Elementary Statistics and Decision Mathematics courses is available. Students would be well served to have the TI- 82/83 graphing calculator as an integral part of both courses

Automation of A Hybrid Manufacturing System through Tight Integration of Software and Sensor Feedback

This paper presents a framework for the automation of the Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) lab at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The groundwork for the proposed system involves the integration of the LabVIEW software package and a PXI-8195 real time controller with several sensors and actuators. The incorporation of all key control parameters into one virtual instrument will help achieve the goal of an automated hybrid system. To achieve this goal, a five-phase plan, which will be further discussed in the paper, has been developed. The first phase of this plan, which includes the deposition of a thin walled structure without DNC communication between LabVIEW and the CNC has been achieved, and will be the focus of this paper
