First sequence-confirmed case of infection with the new influenza A(H1N1) strain in Germany
Here, we report on the first sequence-confirmed case of infection with the new influenza A(H1N1) virus in Germany. Two direct contacts of the patient were laboratory-confirmed as cases and demonstrate a chain of direct human-to-human transmission
Determination of the map of efficiency of the J-PET detector with the GATE package
A novel PET detector consisting of strips of polymer scintillators is being
developed by the J-PET Collaboration. The map of efficiency and the map of
geometrical acceptance of the 2-strip J-PET scanner are presented. Map of
efficiency was determined using the Monte Carlo simulation software GATE based

J-PET analysis framework for the prototype TOF-PET detector
Novel TOF-PET scanner solutions demand, apart from the state of the art
detectors, software for fast processing of the gathered data, monitoring of the
whole scanner and reconstruction of the PET image. In this article we present
an analysis framework for the novel STRIP-PET scanner developed by the J-PET
collaboration in the Institute of Physics of the Jagiellonian University. This
software is based on the ROOT package used in many particle physics

Analysis framework for the J-PET scanner
J-PET analysis framework is a flexible, lightweight, ROOT-based software
package which provides the tools to develop reconstruction and calibration
procedures for PET tomography. In this article we present the implementation of
the full data-processing chain in the J-PET framework which is used for the
data analysis of the J-PET tomography scanner. The Framework incorporates
automated handling of PET setup parameters' database as well as high level
tools for building data reconstruction procedures. Each of these components is

http://versita.com/bgssThis article presents the spatial and population density changes in Polish towns in the years 1960–2003. The assumed time frame allowed identifying area changes for a complete set of towns in different socio-economic conditions: the period of intense industrialisation, the economic crisis of the 1980s, the period of economic transition and finally in the years of a market economy. The investigation revealed that the trend
shown by changes and the size of a town as measured by the number of its population are distinctly interrelated. It also demonstrated a much stronger dynamics of changes in the first subperiod, i.e. years 1960–1985, followed by a phase of relative stabilization (compared with the previous period) after the year 1980 (mainly of the spatial changes). Moreover, change intensity and change trends observed for the urban areas and population densities vary considerably in terms of space
Novel functions and regulation of cryptic cellobiose operons in Escherichia coli
Presence of cellobiose as a sole carbon source induces mutations in the chb and asc operons of Escherichia coli and allows it to grow on cellobiose. We previously engineered these two operons with synthetic constitutive promoters and achieved efficient cellobiose metabolism through adaptive evolution. In this study, we characterized two mutations observed in the efficient cellobiose metabolizing strain: duplication of RBS of ascB gene, (beta-glucosidase of asc operon) and nonsense mutation in yebK, (an uncharacterized transcription factor). Mutations in yebK play a dominant role by modulating the length of lag phase, relative to the growth rate of the strain when transferred from a rich medium to minimal cellobiose medium. Mutations in ascB, on the other hand, are specific for cellobiose and help in enhancing the specific growth rate. Taken together, our results show that ascB of the asc operon is controlled by an internal putative promoter in addition to the native cryptic promoter, and the transcription factor yebK helps to remodel the host physiology for cellobiose metabolism. While previous studies characterized the stress-induced mutations that allowed growth on cellobiose, here, we characterize the adaptation-induced mutations that help in enhancing cellobiose metabolic ability.
