    Thermal Stability and Mechanical Properties of 5483 Al Alloy Processed by ECAP

    Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) is one of the methods which allows to obtain ultrafine-grained and nanocrystalline metallic materials. It is well known that microstructure of materials pro-cessed by ECAP in not very stable. There were published many experimental and theoretical evidences of this fact obtained by various methods such as microstructure observations, properties measurement and computer modeling. The aim of presented paper was to investigate the thermal stability of microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al 5483 alloy processed by ECAP. As a result of performed investigations it was concluded that accumulated plastic deformation has no influence on the thermal stability of Al 5483 alloy processed by ECAP. It was also found that properly chosen parameters of ECAP and subsequent annealing allows to produce materials with high strength and plasticity.     Summing free unitary random matrices

    I use quaternion free probability calculus - an extension of free probability to non-Hermitian matrices (which is introduced in a succinct but self-contained way) - to derive in the large-size limit the mean densities of the eigenvalues and singular values of sums of independent unitary random matrices, weighted by complex numbers. In the case of CUE summands, I write them in terms of two "master equations," which I then solve and numerically test in four specific cases. I conjecture a finite-size extension of these results, exploiting the complementary error function. I prove a central limit theorem, and its first sub-leading correction, for independent identically-distributed zero-drift unitary random matrices.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure

    Quasilocality of joining/splitting strings from coherent states

    Using the coherent state formalism we calculate matrix elements of the one-loop non-planar dilatation operator of N=4{\cal N}=4 SYM between operators dual to folded Frolov-Tseytlin strings and observe a curious scaling behavior. We comment on the {\it qualitative} similarity of our matrix elements to the interaction vertex of a string field theory. In addition, we present a solvable toy model for string splitting and joining. The scaling behaviour of the matrix elements suggests that the contribution to the genus one energy shift coming from semi-classical string splitting and joining is small.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures in 11 file

    International audienceTropospheric chemistry and air quality processes were implemented on-line in the Global Environmental Multiscale model. The integrated model, GEM-AQ, has been developed as a platform to investigate chemical weather at scales from global to urban. The model was exercised for five years (2001?2005) to evaluate its ability to simulate seasonal variations and regional distributions of trace gases such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide on the global scale. The model results presented are compared with observations from satellites, aircraft measurement campaigns and balloon sondes

    The effect of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) muteins on human neutrophils in vitro

    Tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) has been implicated as an important inflammatory mediator. In vitro, TNF-α is reported to activate human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), inducing responses such as phagocytic activity, degranulation and oxidative metabolism. Biological responses to TNF-α are initiated by its binding to specific cell surface receptors, and various studies have shown that the major TNF receptor species on PMN is the 75 kDa receptor. To verify the suggestion that the receptor binding domain includes the region close to the N-terminus of the TNF-α molecule, four TNF-α derivatives termed muteins were constructed, using a synthetic cDNA fragment substituting the N-terminal 3–7 selected hydrophilic or hydrophobic amino acids in the original TNF-α genomic DNA. Binding of muteins to PMN was assessed using monoclonal antibodies recognizing either the 55 kDa (p55) or the 75 kDa (p75) TNF receptor subtypes. Blocking by muteins of anti-p75 antibody binding to PMN was as expected from their N-terminal amino acid composition and hydrophilic properties. Hydrophilic muteins competed well with anti-TNF receptor antibodies for binding to the p75 receptor. In contrast, hydrophobic muteins were unable to block anti-p75 binding. Similarly, degranulation, chemiluminescence or enhancement of the PMN response to specific stimuli by the muteins correlated with the hydrophilic properties of the muteins. The significance of these observations in relation to the molecular structure of TNF-α is discussed

    Diffusion tensor imaging of Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy: a tract-based spatial statistics study

    Although often clinically indistinguishable in the early stages, Parkinson's disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) have distinct neuropathological changes. The aim of the current study was to identify white matter tract neurodegeneration characteristic of each of the three syndromes. Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) was used to perform a whole-brain automated analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data to compare differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) between the three clinical groups and healthy control subjects. Further analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between these putative indices of white matter microstructure and clinical measures of disease severity and symptoms. In PSP, relative to controls, changes in DTI indices consistent with white matter tract degeneration were identified in the corpus callosum, corona radiata, corticospinal tract, superior longitudinal fasciculus, anterior thalamic radiation, superior cerebellar peduncle, medial lemniscus, retrolenticular and anterior limb of the internal capsule, cerebral peduncle and external capsule bilaterally, as well as the left posterior limb of the internal capsule and the right posterior thalamic radiation. MSA patients also displayed differences in the body of the corpus callosum corticospinal tract, cerebellar peduncle, medial lemniscus, anterior and superior corona radiata, posterior limb of the internal capsule external capsule and cerebral peduncle bilaterally, as well as the left anterior limb of the internal capsule and the left anterior thalamic radiation. No significant white matter abnormalities were observed in the PD group. Across groups, MD correlated positively with disease severity in all major white matter tracts. These results show widespread changes in white matter tracts in both PSP and MSA patients, even at a mid-point in the disease process, which are not found in patients with PD

    Clinical Non-Motor Phenotyping of Black and Asian Minority Ethnic Compared to White Individuals with Parkinson's Disease Living in the United Kingdom

    BACKGROUND: Ethnic phenotypic differences in Parkinson's disease (PD) are important to understand the heterogeneity of PD and develop biomarkers and clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: To investigate (i) whether there are non-motor symptoms (NMS)-and comorbidity-based phenotypic differences between Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and White PD patients and (ii) whether clinically available biomarkers may help differentiate and explain the diversity. METHODS: This is a multicentre (four sites, London), real-life, cross-sectional study including PD patients of BAME or White ethnicity. The primary outcome was a detailed NMS assessment, additional measurements included disease and motor stage, comorbidity, sociodemographic parameters and brain MRI imaging. RESULTS: 271 PD patients (54 Asian, 71 Black, and 146 White) were included balanced for age, gender, and disease severity (HY). Black patients had a shorter disease duration compared to White and Asian populations. The SCOPA-Motor activities of daily living scores as well as the NMSS scores were significantly higher in both Black (total score and domain "miscellaneous") and Asian (total score and domains "sleep/fatigue", mood/apathy" and perception/hallucinations) than White individuals. Both BAME populations had higher prevalence of arterial hypertension, and the Black population had a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Brain MRI revealed a greater severity of white matter changes in Black compared to the White and Asian cohorts. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest differences in phenotype of PD in BAME populations with greater burden of NMS and motor disability and a higher rate of cardiovascular comorbidities

    Cortical thickness, surface area and volume measures in Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy

    OBJECTIVE Parkinson's disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) are neurodegenerative diseases that can be difficult to distinguish clinically. The objective of the current study was to use surface-based analysis techniques to assess cortical thickness, surface area and grey matter volume to identify unique morphological patterns of cortical atrophy in PD, MSA and PSP and to relate these patterns of change to disease duration and clinical features. METHODS High resolution 3D T1-weighted MRI volumes were acquired from 14 PD patients, 18 MSA, 14 PSP and 19 healthy control participants. Cortical thickness, surface area and volume analyses were carried out using the automated surface-based analysis package FreeSurfer (version 5.1.0). Measures of disease severity and duration were assessed for correlation with cortical morphometric changes in each clinical group. RESULTS Results show that in PSP, widespread cortical thinning and volume loss occurs within the frontal lobe, particularly the superior frontal gyrus. In addition, PSP patients also displayed increased surface area in the pericalcarine. In comparison, PD and MSA did not display significant changes in cortical morphology. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that patients with clinically established PSP exhibit distinct patterns of cortical atrophy, particularly affecting the frontal lobe. These results could be used in the future to develop a useful clinical application of MRI to distinguish PSP patients from PD and MSA patients
