Energy balance of different organic biogas farming systems
The ecological impact of biogas plants depends on their integration into a given farming system. Therefore only farm-specific and no general statements are possible. In this paper, two different concepts of biogas production for an organic cash crop farm have been energetically balanced using a model software. The analysis of input and efficient use of fossil energy carriers provides information on the environmental relevance of the farm operations. Apart from this, renewable energy production in the farming systems is compared to food production, and changes in the farm output are described. It turns out that organically run cash crop farms can benefit from a reasonable integration of a biogas plant, both in food crop and energy production. An increased orientation on the growing of energy crops, however, leads to worse utilization of fossil energy carriers and reduced food production
Exchange-energy functionals for finite two-dimensional systems
Implicit and explicit density functionals for the exchange energy in finite
two-dimensional systems are developed following the approach of Becke and
Roussel [Phys. Rev. A 39, 3761 (1989)]. Excellent agreement for the
exchange-hole potentials and exchange energies is found when compared with the
exact-exchange reference data for the two-dimensional uniform electron gas and
few-electron quantum dots, respectively. Thereby, this work significantly
improves the availability of approximate density functionals for dealing with
electrons in quasi-two-dimensional structures, which have various applications
in semiconductor nanotechnology.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
High-resolution 3D reflection seismic on a tidal flat: acquisition, processing and interpretation
The survey was carried out on the Plaat van Oude Tonge, an intertidal shoal in the Eastern Scheldt inlet. The high resolution reveals internal structures in a dune-like structure which is in contradiction with the general NE-SW trend of the ridges of the Westland Formation. The 3D figures show relief in the flanks of the dune, structures which may have been caused by erosion from surface water run-off
Elastic moduli approximation of higher symmetry for the acoustical properties of an anisotropic material
The issue of how to define and determine an optimal acoustical fit to a set
of anisotropic elastic constants is addressed. The optimal moduli are defined
as those which minimize the mean squared difference in the acoustical tensors
between the given moduli and all possible moduli of a chosen higher material
symmetry. The solution is shown to be identical to minimizing a Euclidean
distance function, or equivalently, projecting the tensor of elastic stiffness
onto the appropriate symmetry. This has implications for how to best select
anisotropic constants to acoustically model complex materials.Comment: 20 page
Integrated dielectric spectrometer for wideband and highspeed measurements using pseudo-noise codes
The paper gives a short introduction into some system-theoretic aspects and features of dielectric measurements by periodic wideband signals. Based on these considerations, a related measurement concept will be presented which is well suited for both compact device implementation and monolithic integration. Some implementation examples are shown and first measurement results are presented
Adenoviruses in Avian Hosts: Recent Discoveries Shed New Light on Adenovirus Diversity and Evolution
While adenoviruses cause infections in a wide range of vertebrates, members of the genus Atadenovirus, Siadenovirus, and Aviadenovirus predominantly infect avian hosts. Several recent studies on avian adenoviruses have encouraged us to re-visit previously proposed adenovirus evolutionary concepts. Complete genomes and partial DNA polymerase sequences of avian adenoviruses were extracted from NCBI and analysed using various software. Genomic analyses and constructed phylogenetic trees identified the atadenovirus origin from an Australian native passerine bird in contrast to the previously established reptilian origin. In addition, we demonstrated that the theories on higher AT content in atadenoviruses are no longer accurate and cannot be considered as a species demarcation criterion for the genus Atadenovirus. Phylogenetic reconstruction further emphasised the need to reconsider siadenovirus origin, and we recommend extended studies on avian adenoviruses in wild birds to provide finer evolutionary resolution
Quality management: reduction of waiting time and efficiency enhancement in an ENT-university outpatients' department
Background Public health systems are confronted with constantly rising costs. Furthermore, diagnostic as well as treatment services become more and more specialized. These are the reasons for an interdisciplinary project on the one hand aiming at simplification of planning and scheduling patient appointments, on the other hand at fulfilling all requirements of efficiency and treatment quality. Methods As to understanding procedure and problem solving activities, the responsible project group strictly proceeded with four methodical steps: actual state analysis, analysis of causes, correcting measures, and examination of effectiveness. Various methods of quality management, as for instance opinion polls, data collections, and several procedures of problem identification as well as of solution proposals were applied. All activities were realized according to the requirements of the clinic's ISO 9001:2000 certified quality management system. The development of this project is described step by step from planning phase to inauguration into the daily routine of the clinic and subsequent control of effectiveness. Results Five significant problem fields could be identified. After an analysis of causes the major remedial measures were: installation of a patient telephone hotline, standardization of appointment arrangements for all patients, modification of the appointments book considering the reason for coming in planning defined working periods for certain symptoms and treatments, improvement of telephonic counselling, and transition to flexible time planning by daily updates of the appointments book. After implementation of these changes into the clinic's routine success could be demonstrated by significantly reduced waiting times and resulting increased patient satisfaction. Conclusion Systematic scrutiny of the existing organizational structures of the outpatients' department of our clinic by means of actual state analysis and analysis of causes revealed the necessity of improvement. According to rules of quality management correcting measures and subsequent examination of effectiveness were performed. These changes resulted in higher satisfaction of patients, referring colleagues and clinic staff the like. Additionally the clinic is able to cope with an increasing demand for appointments in outpatients' departments, and the clinic's human resources are employed more effectively
First-principles approach to noncollinear magnetism: Towards spin dynamics
A description of noncollinear magnetism in the framework of spin-density functional theory is presented for the exact exchange energy functional which depends explicitly on two-component spinor orbitals. The equations for the effective Kohn-Sham scalar potential and magnetic field are derived within the optimized effective potential (OEP) framework. With the example of a magnetically frustrated Cr
monolayer it is shown that the resulting magnetization density exhibits much more noncollinear structure than standard calculations. Furthermore, a time-dependent generalization of the noncollinear OEP method is well suited for an ab initio description of spin dynamics. We also show that the magnetic moments of solids Fe, Co, and Ni are well reproduced
