    Environmental Sustainability, Cultural Awareness, and Personal Growth: A Short-Term Study Abroad Program Design for the University of Colorado, Boulder

    The University of Colorado (CU), as with many academic institutions in the United States, has seen a consistent increase in the number of students opting for short-term study abroad programs. A growing concern in the field of international education is whether it is possible for students to mature in cultural competence from such a short time spent abroad. In an initiative to deliberately increase students’ intercultural growth during short-term excursions, Global Seminar: Environmental Sustainability and Cross-Culture Contact in Costa Rica (GSCR) proposes a program that implements two new aspects to CU’s study abroad options: a course-linked program and an intentional focus on cultural competence. The proposed program spans one full spring semester on campus and a three-week summer session in Costa Rica. GSCR students will engage in learning activities focused on environmental sustainability, intercultural understanding and personal growth. GSCR develops its academic foundations from the theories and foundational works of Spencer and Tuma’s Guide to Successful Short-Term Programs Abroad, Mezirow\u27s Transformational Learning Theory, Howell’s theory on Developing Intercultural Competence, David Kolb\u27s Experiential Learning Cycle, and the Gallup Business Journal\u27s book Now, Discover Your Strengths. Drawing on best practices from the field of international education and short-term study abroad, GSCR addresses all elements of a comprehensive program design with a focus on theoretical foundations and the curriculum. Upon successful completion of the program, CU would see the possibility of offering similar programs in a variety of subjects and disciplines

    Online Laboratory Introductions to Promote Student Interactions with Two Science and Engineering Practices of the Next Generation Science Standards

    Online science courses are becoming increasingly available to K-12 students in the United States. With the utilization of these courses, it is important to facilitate student completion of laboratories as well as student interest in and use of the science and engineering practices (SEPs) of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This exploratory research provided online laboratory introductions to help students interact with the content and the instructor. The research studied if the laboratory introductions led students to ask questions about laboratories, complete laboratories, and think about and use two NGSS SEPs, specifically analyzing and interpreting data and constructing explanations and designing solutions. Archived data provided information for the background of the study. The intervention class experienced introductions to the content, procedures, and focus NGSS SEPs for online laboratories. The researcher studied qualitative and quantitative data and determined there was an increase in student completion of the laboratories in general as well as identifiable impacts on student questions and thoughts about and use of the NGSS SEPs of focus. Data included pre- and post-course surveys, student laboratory questions, laboratory completion rates, laboratory scores, and laboratory answer analyses

    Cross-correlation analysis of CMB with foregrounds for residuals

    In this paper, we try to probe whether a clean CMB map obtained from the raw satellite data using a cleaning procedure is sufficiently clean. Specifically we study if there are any foreground residuals still present in the cleaned data using a cross-correlation statistic. Residual contamination is expected to be present, primarily, in the galactic plane due to the high emission from our own galaxy. A foreground mask is applied conventionally to avoid biases in the estimated quantities of interest due to foreground leakage. Here, we map foreground residuals, if present, in the unmasked region i.e., outside a CMB analysis mask. Further locally extended foreground-contaminated regions, found eventually, are studied to understand them better. The few contaminated regions thus identified may be used to slightly extend the available masks to make them more stringent.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, Accepted in MNRA

    Enhancing Policy Capacity for Better Policy Integration: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in a Post COVID-19 World

    The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the UN, in 2015, established a clear global mandate for greater integrated policymaking, but there has been little consensus on how to achieve them. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the role of policy capacity in mounting this kind of integrated policy response; however, the relationship between pre- and post-pandemic SDG efforts remains largely unexplored. In this article, we seek to address this gap through a conceptual analysis of policy integration and the capacities necessary for its application to the current SDG situation. Building on the literature on policy design, we define policy integration as the process of effectively reconciling policy goals and policy instruments and we offer a typology of policy integration efforts based on the degree of goal and instrument consistency including: policy harmonization, mainstreaming, coordination, and institutionalization. These forms of policy integration dictate the types of strategies that governments need to adopt in order to arrive at a more coherent policy mix. Following the dimensions of policy capacity by Wu et al. (2015), policy capacities are identified that are critical to ensuring successful integration. This information, thus, contributes to both academic- and policy-related debates on policy integration, by advancing conceptual clarity on the different, and sometimes, diverging concepts used in the field

    A Method for Reviewing the Accuracy and Reliability of a Five-Level Triage Process (Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale) in a Community Emergency Department Setting: Building the Crowding Measurement Infrastructure

    Objectives. Triage data are widely used to evaluate patient flow, disease severity, and emergency department (ED) workload, factors used in ED crowding evaluation and management. We defined an indicator-based methodology that can be easily used to review the accuracy of Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) performance. Methods. A trained nurse reviewer (NR) retrospectively triaged two separate month's ED charts relative to a set of clinical indicators based on CTAS Chief Complaints. Interobserver reliability and accuracy were compared using Kappa and comparative statistics. Results. There were 2838 patients in Trial 1 and 3091 in Trial 2. The rate of inconsistent triage was 14% and 16% (Kappa 0.596 and 0.604). Clinical Indicators “pain scale, chest pain, musculoskeletal injury, respiratory illness, and headache” captured 68% and 62% of visits. Conclusions. We have demonstrated a system to measure the levels of process accuracy and reliability for triage over time. We identified five key clinical indicators which captured over 60% of visits. A simple method for quality review uses a small set of indicators, capturing a majority of cases. Performance consistency and data collection using indicators may be important areas to direct training efforts

    Representation in Wales: an empirical analysis of the policy divisions between voters and candidates

    Politics in Wales is often portrayed as being relatively consensual when compared with the rest of the United Kingdom and enjoying healthy levels of trust between voters and elites. Recent events like the decision of Welsh voters to reject the European Union membership against the advice of most of its political establishment, however, are calling to question this perception. Using 2016 Welsh Candidate Study and 2016 Welsh Election Study data, this paper evaluates the extent of policy divisions between voters and candidates in Wales. I find that candidates hold more liberal policy positions and are less likely to think of immigration as the most important policy priority. In addition, they tend to favour a different approach to parliamentary representation, deeming it more acceptable for Assembly Members to discard the views of their voters in favour of their own views or those of their party

    Fall speed measurement and high-resolution multi-angle photography of hydrometeors in free fall

    We describe here a new instrument for imaging hydrometeors in free fall. The Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC) captures high-resolution photographs of hydrometeors from three angles while simultaneously measuring their fall speed. Based on the stereoscopic photographs captured over the two months of continuous measurements obtained at a high altitude location within the Wasatch Front in Utah, we derive statistics for fall speed, hydrometeor size, shape, orientation and aspect ratio. From a selection of the photographed hydrometeors, an illustration is provided for how the instrument might be used for making improved microwave scattering calculations. Complex, aggregated snowflake shapes appear to be more strongly forward scattering, at the expense of reduced back-scatter, than heavily rimed graupel particles of similar size

    Associations between a laboratory frailty index and adverse health outcomes across age and sex

    Objective: Early frailty may be captured by a frailty index (FI) based entirely on vital signs and laboratory tests. Our aim was to examine associations between a laboratory-based FI (FI-Lab) and adverse health outcomes, and investigate how this changed with age. Methods: Up to 8988 individuals aged 20+ years from the 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cohorts were included. Characteristics of the FI-Lab were compared to those of a self-reported clinical FI. Associations between each FI and health care use, self-reported health, and disability were examined in the full sample and across age groups. Results: Laboratory-based FI scores increased with age but did not demonstrate expected sex differences. Women aged 20-39 years had higher FI scores than men; this pattern reversed after age 60 years. FI-Lab scores were associated with poor self-reported health (odds ratio[95% confidence interval]: 1.46[1.39-1.54]), high health care use (1.35[1.29-1.42]), and high disability (1.41[1.32-1.50]), even among those aged 20-39 years. Conclusion: Higher FI-Lab scores were associated with poor health outcomes at all ages. Associations in the youngest group support the notion that deficit accumulation occurs across the lifespan. FI-Lab scores could be utilized as an early screening tool to identify deficit accumulation at the cellular and molecular level before they become clinically visible

    Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D is related to protein signaling involved in glucose homeostasis in a tissue-specific manner

    Vitamin D has been suggested to play a role in glucose metabolism. However, previous findings are contradictory and mechanistic pathways remain unclear. We examined the relationship between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), insulin sensitivity, and insulin signaling in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Seventeen healthy adults (Body mass index: 26 ± 4; Age: 30 ± 12 years) underwent a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, and resting skeletal muscle and adipose tissue biopsies. In this cohort, the plasma 25(OH)D concentration was not associated with insulin sensitivity (r = 0.19, p = 0.56). However, higher plasma 25(OH)D concentrations correlated with lower phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) αSer21 and βSer9 in skeletal muscle (r = −0.66, p = 0.015 and r = −0.53, p = 0.06, respectively) and higher GSK-3 αSer21 and βSer9 phosphorylation in adipose tissue (r = 0.82, p < 0.01 and r = 0.62, p = 0.042, respectively). Furthermore, higher plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with greater phosphorylation of both protein kinase-B (AktSer473) (r = 0.78, p < 0.001) and insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1Ser312) (r = 0.71, p = 0.01) in adipose tissue. No associations were found between plasma 25(OH)D concentration and IRS-1Tyr612 phosphorylation in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The divergent findings between muscle and adipose tissue with regard to the association between 25(OH)D and insulin signaling proteins may suggest a tissue-specific interaction with varying effects on glucose homeostasis. Further research is required to elucidate the physiological relevance of 25(OH)D in each tissu

    The association of G343.1-2.3 and PSR 1706-44 has been controversial from its first proposal. In this paper we present new evidence from images made by with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), MRT and Mt. Pleasant. To cover the full extent of G343.1-2.3 with ATCA mosaicing was required, and we present the polarisation images from this experiment. The ATCA observations confirms the much larger extent of the SNR, which now encompasses the pulsar
