    The authors generalize the dynamical system constructed by J. Auslander in 1959, resulting in perhaps the simplest family of examples of minimal but not strictly ergodic systems. A characterization of unique ergodicity and mean-L-stability is given. The new systems are also shown to have zero topological entropy and fail to be weakly rigid. Some results on the set of idempotents in the enveloping semigroup are also achieved

    There are two points that should be noted. First, in the thermal resistance calculations it is assumed that the device is operating at 773 K while the results of the room temperature simulations are used. This was done because there is not enough information to correctly predict the material parameters at 773 K. Since, in general, device performance degrades with increasing temperature, the cw results are perhaps a bit optimistic. Second, the electric field in these structures gets extremely high and there might be some possibility of tunneling. This was not incorporated into the simulation. Again, this could result in different device operating conditions

    Study of stability of large maneuvers of airplanes

    A predictive method of nonlinear system analysis is used to investigate airplane stability and dynamic response during rolling maneuvers. The maneuver roll-rate is not assumed to be constant, and the airplane motion is represented by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations. The general rolling maneuver is kinematically specified by its roll-rate variation p(t). A method for relating the airplane dynamic response to p(t) is developed. The method provides analytical expressions for the motion variables in terms of the maneuver descriptor p(t). A parameterized family of rolling maneuvers is considered, for which the method is used to predict specific dynamic response information, such as the dependence of the peak angle-of-attack excursion on the maneuver parameters. The stability and motion of the airplane in response to an arbitrary actuation of aileron input is considered. Analytical expressions relating motion variables to aileron input are obtained. Explicit analytical bounds on the motion variables are derived. A stability criterion which guarantees nondivergence of motion in response to aileron actuation is presented

    Managing interactions between household food security and preschooler health:

    Food security does not assure good nutrition. The nutritional status of an individual is influenced not only by food but also by nonfood factors, such as clean water, sanitation, and health care. The effect of all of these factors must be considered in efforts to rid the world of malnutrition. Food security will result in good nutrition only if nonfood factors are effectively dealt with. In this paper, Lawrence Haddad, Saroj Bhattarai, Maarten Immink, and Shubh Kumar show how malnutrition among preschool children is determined by a complex interaction of illness and lack of food. The authors look at three countries —Ethiopia, Pakistan, and the Philippines — to study how food availability and diarrhea interact and what this interaction means for preschooler malnutrition. Their results show that the links between food consumption, diarrhea, and malnutrition are stronger than most economic studies have assumed.     IP Cluster Points Idempotents, And Recurrent Sequences

    We consider the dynamical system (M,S) where M is the orbit closure of a nonperiodic recurrent sequence of O\u27s and 1\u27s (for example, the Morse sequence) and S is the shift map. The enveloping semigroup is E(M) = {Sⁿ : n ∈ Z} where the closure is taken in the topology of pointwise convergence. H. Furstenberg was the first to establish the existence of relationships between recurrence, IP sets, and idempotents in the enveloping semigroup, and the first author has proven that the closure of the set of idempotents coincides with the IP cluster points. In this paper the authors compute this set for (M,S) and shed light on other combinatorial properties of generalized Morse sequences

    Switching speeds in double‐barrier resonant‐tunneling diode structures

    Switching speeds are calculated for GaAs‐AlGaAs resonant‐tunneling diode structures with different barrier widths from the time‐dependent Schrödinger equation. The speed is determined by monitoring the device current as the bias voltage is instantaneously switched. Effective mass discontinuities at the barrier and quantum well edges are included. Comparisons with previously published results using the wave packet approach are given.
