A simple mean field model for social interactions: dynamics, fluctuations, criticality

We study the dynamics of a spin-flip model with a mean field interaction. The system is non reversible, spacially inhomogeneous, and it is designed to model social interactions. We obtain the limiting behavior of the empirical averages in the limit of infinitely many interacting individuals, and show that phase transition occurs. Then, after having obtained the dynamics of normal fluctuations around this limit, we analize long time fluctuations for critical values of the parameters. We show that random inhomogeneities produce critical fluctuations at a shorter time scale compared to the homogeneous system.Comment: 37 pages, 2 figure

Multi-angle pulse shape detection of scattered light in flow cytometry for label-free cell cycle classification

Flow cytometers are robust and ubiquitous tools of biomedical research, as they enable high- throughput fluorescence-based multi-parametric analysis and sorting of single cells. How- ever, analysis is often constrained by the availability of detection reagents or functional changes of cells caused by fluorescent staining. Here, we introduce MAPS-FC (multi-angle pulse shape flow cytometry), an approach that measures angle- and time-resolved scattered light for high-throughput cell characterization to circumvent the constraints of conventional flow cytometry. In order to derive cell-specific properties from the acquired pulse shapes, we developed a data analysis procedure based on wavelet transform and k-means clustering. We analyzed cell cycle stages of Jurkat and HEK293 cells by MAPS-FC and were able to assign cells to the G1, S, and G2/M phases without the need for fluorescent labeling. The results were validated by DNA staining and by sorting and re-analysis of isolated G1, S, and G2/M populations. Our results demonstrate that MAPS-FC can be used to determine cell properties that are otherwise only accessible by invasive labeling. This approach is technically com- patible with conventional flow cytometers and paves the way for label-free cell sorting

Systemic Risk and Default Clustering for Large Financial Systems

As it is known in the finance risk and macroeconomics literature, risk-sharing in large portfolios may increase the probability of creation of default clusters and of systemic risk. We review recent developments on mathematical and computational tools for the quantification of such phenomena. Limiting analysis such as law of large numbers and central limit theorems allow to approximate the distribution in large systems and study quantities such as the loss distribution in large portfolios. Large deviations analysis allow us to study the tail of the loss distribution and to identify pathways to default clustering. Sensitivity analysis allows to understand the most likely ways in which different effects, such as contagion and systematic risks, combine to lead to large default rates. Such results could give useful insights into how to optimally safeguard against such events.Comment: in Large Deviations and Asymptotic Methods in Finance, (Editors: P. Friz, J. Gatheral, A. Analytic results and weighted Monte Carlo simulations for CDO pricing

We explore the possibilities of importance sampling in the Monte Carlo pricing of a structured credit derivative referred to as Collateralized Debt Obligation (CDO). Modeling a CDO contract is challenging, since it depends on a pool of (typically about 100) assets, Monte Carlo simulations are often the only feasible approach to pricing. Variance reduction techniques are therefore of great importance. This paper presents an exact analytic solution using Laplace-transform and MC importance sampling results for an easily tractable intensity-based model of the CDO, namely the compound Poissonian. Furthermore analytic formulae are derived for the reweighting efficiency. The computational gain is appealing, nevertheless, even in this basic scheme, a phase transition can be found, rendering some parameter regimes out of reach. A model-independent transform approach is also presented for CDO pricing.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

Bacteriological findings regarding the hygienic safety of poultry litter intended as an ingredient of feeds for ruminants

    Get PDF
An investigation of poultry litter intended for use in farm feeds showed that 0,37 %, 0,49 %, 0,25 %and 12,3 % of the 813 samples tested were contaminated with Clostridium spp., haemolytic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and 21 different species of Salmonella. The findings clearly underline the hygienically dangerous nature of crude poultry litter. The practical implications of the results are briefly discussed, particularly in view of current regulations. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi. Exponential martingales and changes of measure for counting processes

We give sufficient criteria for the Dol\'eans-Dade exponential of a stochastic integral with respect to a counting process local martingale to be a true martingale. The criteria are adapted particularly to the case of counting processes and are sufficiently weak to be useful and verifiable, as we illustrate by several examples. In particular, the criteria allow for the construction of for example nonexplosive Hawkes processes as well as counting processes with stochastic intensities depending on diffusion processes
