    Research in plant pathology often relies on testing interactions between a fungicide and a pathogen in vitro and extrapolating from these results what may happen in planta. Likewise, results from glasshouse experiments are used to estimate what will happen if the fungicide is applied in the field.     S-duality, triangle groups and modular anomalies in N=2 SQCD

    We study N=2 superconformal theories with gauge group SU(N ) and 2N fundamental flavours in a locus of the Coulomb branch with a Z_N symmetry. In this special vacuum, we calculate the prepotential, the dual periods and the period matrix using equivariant localization. When the flavors are massless, we find that the period matrix is completely specified by [N/2] effective couplings. On each of these, we show that the S-duality group acts as a generalized triangle group and that its hauptmodul can be used to write a non-perturbatively exact relation between each effective coupling and the bare one. For N = 2, 3, 4 and 6, the generalized triangle group is an arithmetic Hecke group which contains a subgroup that is also a congruence subgroup of the modular group PSL(2,\u2124). For these cases, we introduce mass deformations that respect the symmetries of the special vacuum and show that the constraints arising from S-duality make it possible to resum the instanton contributions to the period matrix in terms of meromorphic modular forms which solve modular anomaly equations

    The Labour Government, the Treasury and the ÂŁ6 pay policy of July 1975

    The 1974-79 Labour Government was elected in a climate of opinion that was fiercely opposed to government intervention in the wage determination process, and was committed to the principles of free collective bargaining in its manifestoes. However, by December 1974 the Treasury was advocating a formal incomes policy, and by July 1975 the government had introduced a £6 flat rate pay norm. With reference to archival sources, the paper demonstrates that TUC and Labour Party opposition to incomes policy was reconciled with the Treasury's advocacy by limiting the Bank of England‟s intervention in the foreign exchange market when sterling came under pressure. This both helped to achieve the Treasury's objective of improving the competitiveness of British industry, and acted as a catalyst for the introduction of incomes policy because the slide could be attributed to a lack of market confidence in British counter-inflation policy

    A discrete slug population model determined by egg production

    Slugs are significant pests in agriculture (as well as a nuisance to gardeners), and it is therefore important to understand their population dynamics for the construction of efficient and effective control measures. Differential equation models of slug populations require the inclusion of large (variable) temporal delays, and strong seasonal forcing results in a non-autonomous system. This renders such models open to only a limited amount of rigorous analysis. In this paper, we derive a novel batch model based purely upon the quantity of eggs produced at different times of the year. This model is open to considerable reduction; from the resulting two variable discrete-time system it is possible to reconstruct the dynamics of the full population across the year and give conditions for extinction or global stability and persistence. Furthermore, the steady state temporal population distribution displays qualitatively different behavior with only small changes in the survival probability of slugs. The model demonstrates how small variations in the favorability of different years may result in widely different slug population fluctuations between consecutive years, and is in good agreement with field data

    From social contract to 'social contrick' : the depoliticisation of economic policy-making under Harold Wilson, 1974–75

    The 1974-79 Labour Governments were elected on the basis of an agreement with the TUC promising a redistribution of income and wealth known as the Social Contract. However, the Government immediately began to marginalise these commitments in favour of preferences for incomes policy and public expenditure cuts, which has led the Social Contract to be described as the 'Social Contrick'. These changes were legitimised through a process of depoliticisation, and using an Open Marxist framework and evidence from the National Archives, the paper will show that the Treasury's exchange rate strategy and the need to secure external finance placed issues of confidence at the centre of political debate, allowing the Government to argue there was no alternative to the introduction of incomes policy and the reduction of public expenditure

    Screening of antibacterial activity of Goniothalamus calvicarpa extracts against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri in vitro

    Citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac) is a serious disease in many parts of the world and is difficult to control. The use of copper-based pesticides is becoming a concern due to the accumulation of heavy metals in orchard soils and more benign treatment methods are needed. Eighteen Thai native plant extracts were screened for antibacterial activity against a Thai isolate of Xac and it was found that ethanolic extracts of Goniothalamus calvicarpa leaves showed the strongest antibacterial activity against Xac in vitro. The G. calvicarpa extracts were then sequentially dissolved with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol and retested. A 70% aqueous ethanol extract and a methanol soluble extract produced strong inhibition zones against Xac. Although thin layer chromatographic profiles revealed the likely presence of flavonoids in the biologically active extracts of G. calvicarpa, the active compounds have yet to be identified. Work is proceeding to determine whether specific extracts of G. calvicarpa have biological activity against citrus canker in the field
