Suppressing quasiparticle poisoning with a voltage-controlled filter
We study single-electron charging events in an Al/InAs nanowire hybrid system
with deliberately introduced gapless regions. The occupancy of a Coulomb island
is detected using a nearby radio-frequency quantum dot as a charge sensor. We
demonstrate that a 1 micron gapped segment of the wire can be used to
efficiently suppress single electron poisoning of the gapless region and
therefore protect the parity of the island while maintaining good electrical
contact with a normal lead. In the absence of protection by charging energy,
the 1e switching rate can be reduced below 200 per second. In the same
configuration, we observe strong quantum charge fluctuations due to exchange of
electron pairs between the island and the lead. The magnetic field dependence
of the poisoning rate yields a zero-field superconducting coherence length of ~
90 nm

IMPLEMENTASI KEBIJAKAN PERDA NOMOR 4 TAHUN 2012 TENTANG RENCANA TATA RUANG WILAYAH KOTA MAGELANG TAHUN 2011-2031 (Kajian Implementasi Kebijakan Larangan Mendirikan Bangunan di Sepanjang Sempadan Irigasi Kota Magelang)
There are still infraction in the form of various types of buildings at the irrigation border of Magelang City and some even stand on the irrigation canal of Magelang city become the background of this research. The objectives of the study were to describe and analyze the implementation of the ban building policy along the irrigation border of Magelang City. In addition, to identify and analyze any supporting and inhibiting factors that result in the policy of building ban along the irrigation border of Magelang city can not be implemented properly. This study uses the implementation theory of Van Meter and Van Horn and Daniel A. Mazmanian and Paul A. Sabatier where the variables taken are the characteristics of the problem and the policy environment with a qualitative approach. Data resource obtained from informants and documents. Data collecting techniques using interviews, observation, and documentation. Selection of informants using purposive and random sampling techniques. The results of the research shows that the obstacles to the implementation of this policy are the level of technical difficulties, plurality of target groups, socio-economic conditions, and public opinion, while the supporting factors are constituency groups and interest groups support. The recommendations that can be given are the need for supervision from non-governmental organizations, approaches to target groups, community empowerment, and providing flat
Systematic Occlusion of Shunts: Control of Early Postoperative IOP and Hypotony-related Complications Following Glaucoma Shunt Surgery.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of a protocol of total intraluminal occlusion of Baerveldt shunts and its effects on early postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) control and hypotony-related complications.
DESIGN: This was a noncomparative, prospective, and interventional study.
PARTICIPANTS: Glaucoma patients were recruited to undergo Baerveldt shunt surgery. A total of 116 eyes of 112 patients were enrolled.
INTERVENTION: During shunt implantation, aqueous outflow was restricted using an intraluminal occluding stent inserted through the entire tube length, with and without external ligation, to halt aqueous flow. Postoperatively, eyes underwent ligature laser suture lysis and partial or complete stent removals, at predetermined time intervals.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Loss of postoperative IOP control was categorized as transient or persistent hypotony (IOP≤5 mm Hg) or hypertony (IOP>21 mm Hg). Patients were followed up for 1 year.
RESULTS: Preoperatively median IOP was 23 mm Hg (mean 26 mm Hg, SD 12 mm Hg), median number of glaucoma medications was 3.0 (mean 3.0, SD 1.2). During year 1, laser suture lysis was performed in 30 eyes (26%) and stent removal in 93 eyes (80%) (23 partial; 70 complete). There was 1 case of transient hypotony, no cases of persistent hypotony, 10 of transient hypertony, and 3 of persistent hypertony. Nine eyes had IOP≤5 mm Hg at ≥1 time points and hypotony-related complications occurred in 8 eyes (7%). At 1 year, median IOP was 12 mm Hg (mean 13 mm Hg, SD 4 mm Hg) with a median of 1.0 glaucoma medications (mean 1.1, SD 1.3). The cumulative probability of failure during the first 12 months follow-up was 6% (n=7). Overall postoperative complications occurred in 11 eyes (9%).
CONCLUSIONS: The surgical and postoperative protocol resulted in controlled, step-wise reductions of IOP with low rates of hypotony and related complications

Pregnancy-related Factors Responsible for Delivering Low Birth Weight Babies: An Institutional-based Cross-sectional Study, Jamnagar, Gujarat
BACKGROUND: The WHO defines LBW as Birth weight less than 2500 grams regardless of gestational age. Being born with a low birth weight also incurs enormous economic costs, including higher medical expenditures and social service expenses, and decreased productivity in adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: To study distribution of newborns\u27 according to pregnancy related factors and its association with newborns\u27 birth weight.
METHODS: An institutional based cross-sectional study. New-borns delivered at study institute were considered as study participants. Estimated final sample size was 500. Guardians (mothers) were face-to-face interviewed and also recorded data were collected from the case file and Mother and Child Protection Card.
RESULTS: Prevalence of LBW newborns was higher in mothers with late ANC registration, visits, chronic medical conditions, infection during pregnancy, PIH, anemia, consuming tobacco, exposure to second hand smoke, LSCS/Assisted delivery, in female newborns\u27, current pregnancy birth order number more than 2, in pre term newborns\u27 and mothers with bad obstetric history.
CONCLUSION: Create awareness and adoption of suitable family planning methods. Need to do early (within 12 weeks) ANC registration with minimum four ANC visits for better pregnancy outcome. Effective tracking and suitable intervention provided to improve current pregnancy outcome. Health care professional should pay special attention to high-risk pregnancy. Develop social culture in such a way that females are neither addicted nor exposed to any tobacco containing products in their life
Recombinant polypeptides for serology of malaria
We have evaluated 3 molecularly defined polypeptides encoded by encloned Plasmodium falciparum genes for their ability to serve as antigens for detecting antimalaria antibodies. The recombinant proteins correspond to (i) a conserved part of 190-200 kDa schizont merozoite surface component, (ii) the carboxy terminal part of the P. falciparum aldolase, and (iii) the 5·1 antigen. Antibodies were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in a high percentage of sera from individuals from a malaria endemic area in The Gambia (up to 99% for some adult groups). These results were further improved, especially for detection of antimalaria antibodies in children, when a pool of all 3 polypeptides (ELISA MIXT) was used as antigen. This ELISA MIXT improves presently available assays for the detection of antimalaria antibodies directed against asexual blood stages in respect of standardization, sensitivity and specificit
