Role of Charm Factory in Extracting CKM-Phase Information via B --> DK

In this paper we study the impact of data that can be obtained from a Charm Factory on the determination of the CKM parameter gamma from decays of the form B -> D0 K where the D0 decays to specific inclusive and exclusive final states. In particular, for each exclusive final state ff, the charm factory can determine the strong phase difference between D0-> f and D0-bar -> f by exploiting correlations in psi(3770)-> D0 D0-bar. This provides crucial input to the determination of gamma via the interference of B+- -> K+- D0 -> f with B+- -> K+- D0-bar -> f. We discuss how the method may be generalized to inclusive final states and illustrate with a toy model how such methods may offer one of the best means to determine gamma with 10^8-10^9 B-mesons.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, Version 2: Fixed typos; add reference; Version 3: fixed latex glitc

Aggregation Issues in the Estimation of Linear Programming Productivity Measures

    Get PDF
This paper demonstrates the sensitivity of the linear programming approach in the estimation of productivity measures in the primal framework using Malmquist productivity index and Malmquist total factor productivity index models. Specifically, the sensitivity of productivity measure to the number of constraints (level of dis-aggregation) and imposition of returns to scale constraints of linear programing is evaluated. Further, the shadow or dual values are recovered from the linear program and compared to the market prices used in the ideal Fisher index approach to illustrate sensitivity. Empirical application to U.S. state-level time series data from 1960-2004 reveal productivity change decreases with increases in the number of constraints. Further, the input and output shadow or dual values are skewed, leading to the difference in the productivity measures due to aggregation.Aggregation, Share-weights, single and multiple output and input, Malmquist productivity index, Malmquist total factor productivity index, Agribusiness, Production Economics,

Man-machine interface analysis of the flight design system

    Get PDF
The objective of the current effort was to perform a broad analysis of the human factors issues involved in the design of the Flight Design System (FDS). The analysis was intended to include characteristics of the system itself, such as: (1) basic structure and functional capabilities of FDS; (2) user backgrounds, capabilities, and possible modes of use; (3) FDS interactive dialogue, problem solving aids; (4) system data management capabilities; and to include, as well, such system related matters as: (1) flight design team structure; (2) roles of technicians; (3) user training; and (4) methods of evaluating system performance. Wherever possible, specific recommendations are made. In other cases, the issues which seem most important are identified. In some cases, additional analyses or experiments which might provide resolution are suggested

Attitudes and Intentions of Students Regarding Future Alumni Activity

    Get PDF
The Director of Alumni Relations at a small, liberal-arts university in the Midwest approached a university marketing professor about investigating student attitudes and intentions regarding future alumni activity. Information collected from preliminary focus groups helped in the creation of a attitudes and intentions survey given to 322 students. Results showed that students seemed knowledgeable about the fundraising needs of the university, but lacked sophistication about these needs. A targeted marketing campaign aimed at improving students\u27 level of sophistication shows great potential for altering the apathetic attitudes some students have about donating back to their alma mater. Due to the lack of relevant literature on the topic and the serious need for increased funds at all universities, these results may aid university management in increasing finances from alumni

Redefining Participation: Towards the Creation and Understanding of an Inclusive Definition

    Get PDF
Although a great deal of research has been conducted regarding class participation, researchers have systematically disregarded those students who participate best through means other than vocal contribution to class discussion. This exploratory study examined definitions of participation, as well as participation behaviors and beliefs, in the hope of gaining a better understanding of the culture of participation. Participants included 17 professors and 101 students. Cluster analysis was conducted and showed the existence of at least three distinct groups of participators. Independent samples t-tests showed only one significant difference between student and professor beliefs of how likely students would be to participate in selected situations. Implications of this study include the ability for professors to understand the different participation groups that exist within a group of students and allow them to better address the ways in which mandatory participation can increase the overall quantity and quality of learning

Probing the Top-Quark Electric Dipole Moment at a Photon Linear Collider

    Get PDF
We probe the top-quark electric dipole moment (EDM) in top-quark pair production via photon-photon fusion at a photon linear collider. We show how linearly-polarized photon beams can be used to extract information on the top-quark EDM without the use of complicated angular correlations of top-quark decay products. If the luminosity of the laser back-scattered photon-photon collisions is comparable to that of the e+e−e^+e^- collisions, then the measurement of the top-quark EDM obtained by counting top-quark-production events in photon fusion can be as accurate as the measurement obtained by studying the ttˉt\bar{t} decay correlations in e+e−e^+e^- collisions using a perfect detector.Comment: Latex, 11 pages, 1 figure (not included). Anomalous Chromomagnetic Moments of Quarks and Large Transverse Energy Jets

    Get PDF
We consider the jet cross sections for gluons coupling to quarks with an anomalous chromomagnetic moment. We then apply this to the deviation and bounds from QCD found in the CDF and D0 Fermilab data, respectively, to find a range of possible values for the anomalous moments. The quadratic and quartic terms in the anomalous moments can fit to the rise of a deviation with transverse energy. Since previous analyses have been done on the top quark total cross section, here we assume the same moment on all quarks except the top and find the range ∣Îșâ€Č∣≡∣Îș/(2mq)∣=1.0±0.3|\kappa'| \equiv |\kappa/(2 m_q)| = 1.0\pm 0.3 TeV−1^{-1} for the CDF data. Assuming the anomalous moment is present only on a charm or bottom quark which is pair produced results in a range ∣Îșb,câ€Č∣=3.5±1.0|\kappa'_{b,c}| = 3.5 \pm 1.0 TeV−1^{-1}. The magnitudes here are compared with anomalous magnetic moments that could account for RbR_b and found to be in the same general range, as well as not inconsistent with LEP and SLD bounds on ΔΓhad\Delta \Gamma_{\text{had}}.Comment: REVTeX, 11 pages, 2 postscript figure

    Measuring Îł\gamma in B±→K±(KK∗)DB^\pm \to K^\pm (K K^*)_D decays

We develop a method to measure the CKM angle Îł\gamma without hadronic uncertainties from the analysis of B±→K±D0B^\pm \to K^\pm D^0 and K^\pm \D0bar followed by singly Cabibbo-suppressed DD decays to non CP-eigenstates, such as K±K∗∓K^\pm K^{*\mp}. This method utilizes the interference between b→cuˉsb\to c\bar u s and b→ucˉsb\to u\bar c s decays, and we point out several attractive features of it. All the modes that need to be measured for this method are accessible in the present data.Comment: 8 page
