A multidisciplinary Tier 3 weight management service in primary care recruited patients with a body mass index ≥40 kg·m−2, or 30 kg·m−2 with obesity-related co-morbidity to a 1-year programme. A cohort of 230 participants was recruited and evaluated using the National Obesity Observatory Standard Evaluation Framework. The primary outcome was weight loss of at least 5% of baseline weight at 12 months. Diet was assessed using the two-item food frequency questionnaire, activity using the General Practice Physical Activity questionnaire and quality of life using the EuroQol-5D-5L questionnaire. A focus group explored the participants' experiences. Baseline mean weight was 124.4 kg and mean body mass index was 44.1 kg·m−2. A total of 102 participants achieved 5% weight loss at 12 months. The mean weight loss was 10.2 kg among the 117 participants who completed the 12-month programme. Baseline observation carried forward analysis gave a mean weight loss of 5.9 kg at 12 months. Fruit and vegetable intake, activity level and quality of life all improved. The dropout rate was 14.3% at 6 months and 45.1% at 1 year. Focus group participants described high levels of satisfaction. It was possible to deliver a Tier 3 weight management service for obese patients with complex co-morbidity in a primary care setting with a full multidisciplinary team, which obtained good health outcomes compared with existing services

An indirect method has been developed for the stepwise titration of barium and strontium with EDTA, based on precipitation of the elements as sulphate from a homogeneous solution. Barium, strontium and other multivalent cations are complexed by titration with EDTA a t pH 10.0 by using a mixed indicator comprising Eriochrome black T, Titan yellow and Naphthol green B. Barium is then selectively replaced from its EDTA complex and precipitated as the sulphate with an excess of magnesium sulphate solution. The excess of magnesium is determined by titration with EDTA and the equivalent concentration of barium is calculated. Strontium is determined in the same solution in the same way, with an excess ?f zinc sulphate solution. The optimum conditions for precipitation and the interfercnces due to various anions and cations have also been studied. Copper, nickel, cobalt and iron interfere and a second method for the determination of barium alone has been derived wherein the interfering elements are comglexeql with triethanolamine, potassium cyanide and ascorbic acid. Phosphate and chromate interfere and require to be separated. 1 VARIOUS methods based on direct and back-titrations of barium and strontium withlEDTA (disodium salt) are reported in the literat~re.l-~ In all of the methods, these elements, and other alkaline earth elements, if present, are co-titrated and therefore prior separation of the individual elements is essential for their determination. Belcher, Gibbons and West6 reported a method for the determination of barium sulphate that entailed dissolving it in an excess of a strongly ammoniacal ( 9~) solution of EDTA and then back-titrating the excess with magnesium ions from magnesium chloride solution. Precipitation of barium as sulphate from a homogeneous solution of its EDTA complex by the replacement reaction with magnesium and nickel in the presence of sulphate ions has been reported for the gravimetric determination of b a r i~m .~,~ However, precipitation from a homogeneous solution has not yet been utilised in complexometric titration of the element in the presence of other alkaline earth elements. This paper describes a method in which barium, strontium and other alkalihe earth elements are complexed by titration with EDTA at pH 10.0 with the use of a mixed indicator. Barium and strontium are then precipitated stepwise as their sulphates at the same pH from a homogeneous solution by displacement reactions with a known (excess) volume of magnesium sulphate and zinc sulphate, respectively, according to the following equations- (log k = 7.76) (log k = 8.69) (log k = 8-63) (logk = 16.26) The excess amounts of magnesium and zinc ions are then titrated stepwise with EDTA solution. Barium and strontium are calculated from the equivalent amounts of magnesium and zinc consumed during their respective displacement reactions. Asymptotic Behaviour of Inhomogeneous String Cosmologies

Get PDF
The asymptotic behaviour at late times of inhomogeneous axion-dilaton cosmologies is investigated. The space-times considered here admit two abelian space-like Killing vectors. These space-times evolve towards an anisotropic universe containing gravitational radiation. Furthermore, a peeling-off behaviour of the Weyl tensor and the antisymmetric tensor field strength is found. The relation to the pre-big-bang scenario is briefly discussed.Comment: 15 pages, Late

Casimir effect due to a single boundary as a manifestation of the Weyl problem

The Casimir self-energy of a boundary is ultraviolet-divergent. In many cases the divergences can be eliminated by methods such as zeta-function regularization or through physical arguments (ultraviolet transparency of the boundary would provide a cutoff). Using the example of a massless scalar field theory with a single Dirichlet boundary we explore the relationship between such approaches, with the goal of better understanding the origin of the divergences. We are guided by the insight due to Dowker and Kennedy (1978) and Deutsch and Candelas (1979), that the divergences represent measurable effects that can be interpreted with the aid of the theory of the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplacian discussed by Weyl. In many cases the Casimir self-energy is the sum of cutoff-dependent (Weyl) terms having geometrical origin, and an "intrinsic" term that is independent of the cutoff. The Weyl terms make a measurable contribution to the physical situation even when regularization methods succeed in isolating the intrinsic part. Regularization methods fail when the Weyl terms and intrinsic parts of the Casimir effect cannot be clearly separated. Specifically, we demonstrate that the Casimir self-energy of a smooth boundary in two dimensions is a sum of two Weyl terms (exhibiting quadratic and logarithmic cutoff dependence), a geometrical term that is independent of cutoff, and a non-geometrical intrinsic term. As by-products we resolve the puzzle of the divergent Casimir force on a ring and correct the sign of the coefficient of linear tension of the Dirichlet line predicted in earlier treatments.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, minor changes to the text, extra references added, version to be published in J. A Dual-Frequency Series-Fed Patch Array Antenna

Get PDF
Abstract-A novel dual-frequency concept for series-fed microstrip patch array antennas is proposed. An identical near field distribution following an identical far field characteristic was achieved at two different frequencies. The conventional series fed array comes with a uniform aperture distribution for patches of same width. By exploiting the dispersion of this periodic structure the same cosine aperture distribution at two different frequencies is obtained. Due to the cosine aperture distribution a low side lobe level of 23 dB is intrinsically achieved for the two operating frequencies, 23 GHz and 25 GHz. This concept is particularly suited for small frequency ratios (f+/f− < 1.3)

Perception of Ghanaian mango farmers on the pest status and current management practices for the control of the African invader fly Bactrocera invadens (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Abstract: The African invader fly Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta and White, generally considered as the most devastating pest of mango was detected in Africa (in Kenya, East Africa) in 2003. It was first detected in Ghana, West Africa in 2005. The perception of mango farmers from Dangbe West and Yilo Krobo districts in Ghana on the pest status and the current management options adopted for the control of this pest was sought by use of a Questionnaire. The survey results indicated that Ghanaian farmers rank B. invadens among the major pests of mango in Ghana. Farmers generally, believed that it is more damaging than other arthropod pest of mango. Possible losses such as loss of market value, rejection of produce at the international markets and quarantine restriction due to the presence of the pest were also reported by the farmers Several strategies are being adopted by farmers for the control of fruit flies (including B.invadens) in Ghana. These strategies include the use of insecticides, cultural control measures, and use of trappings to manage fruit flies. Some of the respondents use a combination of insecticides and cultural practices to reduce the menace of fruit flies. It was evident that farmers adopt multiple strategies to minimize the loses due to fruit flies in an IPM fashion
