Hero’s journey as a lattice structure: A case study of star wars

    Get PDF
Storytelling is one of the oldest human activities for sharing information, entertainment, etc., and it is not wrong to say that myths were the most common form of storytelling through all ages in all cultures. Thanks to the researchers starting with Adolf Bastian and followed by Carl Gustav Jung and Joseph Campbell we now know that there is a common structure in myths regardless the cultural environment they are told in. Among the monomyths of Jung maybe the most interesting one is the hero and, as Campbell showed in “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, his journey. Crucially, the hero’s journey is not only a spatial journey but also a temporal one. The aim of this paper is to show that the temporal journey of the hero in the film series Star Wars, Episode IV-VI, can be organized into a fractal-lattice structure. The lattice-based framework presented here can serve as a formal foundation for an automated storytelling engine to be used in various areas like computer games, interactive books, e-learning, etc

As the experiences of industrialized economies have shown, “intangible capital” such as R&D expenses, patents, copyrights, franchises or licenses, and trademarks, represents a key component of the knowledge of firms that are crucial to their performance. The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of capital inputs on productivity in Turkish manufacturing industry. Using firm-level data from 2003 to 2012, we compare the impact of tangibles and intangibles, as well as different types of intangibles on productivity. Our findings based on the estimation of a Cobb-Douglas production function by using Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) and a semi-parametric estimation method proposed by Olley and Pakes (1996) show that firms with increasing level of expenditure for intangible assets experienced an increase in their productivity. In addition, the effect of intangible assets on productivity is especially significant for computer software and patent capital.Publisher's Versio

It is both a legal and conscientious responsibility of the society to enable children with disabilities to have access to and receive education and training as easily and effectively as possible. Assistive technology offers great opportunities for disabled students to participate in educational activities fully and adequately. This paper presents a software tool developed to assist the education and training of autistic and mentally retarded children. The tool is intended to help the disabled child establish the bridge between expressions and the concepts they refer to via relevant images. Taking into consideration the fact that enabling the user to interact with the system using natural language expressions will be much more effective compared to a system constraining the communication to a limited set of isolated keywords, the tool has been equipped with a Natural Language Processing (NLP) module. This module functions as the backbone of the tool. It analyzes natural language expressions into semantic frames using a unification-based grammar. Input expressions are mapped onto relevant images via the mediation of semantic frames. As these semantics frames represent the content of images, rather than their formal aspects, the system is able to operate on a flexible basis

DergiPark: 245962trakyafbdWWW (World Wide Web) kavramının ortaya çıkışı ile birlikte bilginin ve görselliğin saklandığı HTML (HyperText Markup Language) işaretleme dili İnternetin temelini oluşturmuştur. HTML’in veriyi göstermedeki yetersizlikleri nedeniyle XML (Extensible Markup Language) işaretleme dili İnternet dünyasındaki yerini almaya başlamıştır. Since the emergence of the concept of WWW, the HTML markup language that encodes visual or non-visual information has become the base of the Internet. Because of the inefficiency of HTML to show data, the XML markup language has begun to take a place in the domain of Internet. With XML, the concept of Web services came to existence. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of HTML, XML and Web Services on Internet servers. When examining this effect, we will make use of some dictionaries available on the Internet and similar dictionary which we developed to use in linguistic applications

Introduction: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between autonomic dysfunction (AD) deter- mined according to the blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) response in exercise treadmill test (ETT) prior to cryoballoon ablation (CBA), and the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after CBA in patients with paroxysmal AF. Patients and Methods: Seventy-six patients (mean age 53 ± 11 years, 61.8% male) with paroxysmal AF who underwent CBA were enrolled. Before CBA the ETT was performed by all patients. BP and HR responses in ETT were compared between patients with and without AF recurrence. Results: AD rate was significantly higher in the group with recurrence compared to the non-recurrent group (p 0.05 for all). Examining AD parameters, systolic blood pressure at peak exercise (SBPpeak) (p 0.05 for all ). OD parametreleri incelendiğinde, maksimum egzersizdeki sistolik kan basıncı (188.89 ± 28.13 vs 157.60 ± 28.82, p< 0.001), maksimum egzersizdeki diyastolik kan basıncı (87.47 ± 16.89 vs. 72.02 ± 15.43, p< 0.001), yavaş kalp hızı iyileşmesi [11 (%57.9) vs. 8 (%14), p< 0.001] CBA sonrası AF rekürrensi ile ilişkili bulunmuştur. Sonuç: OD lone AF’li hastalarda CBA sonrası AF rekürrensi ile ilişkili olabilir. Maksimum egzersizdeki sistolik kan basıncı, maksimum egzersizdeki diyastolik kan basıncı, yavaş kalp hızı iyileşmesi ablasyon sonrası AF rekürrens prediktörü olarak bulunmuştur

In the title compound, [Zn(C32H40N8S8)], the ZnII ion is coordinated by four N atoms in a slightly distorted square-planar environment. In addition, there is a Zn⋯S contact involving a symmetry-related S atom which, when considered, forms a pseudo-square-pyramidal coordination with respect to the ZnII ion. Three of the ethyl groups are disordered over two sites with occupancy ratios of 0.841 (10):0.159 (10), 0.802 (10):0.198 (10) and 0.457 (13):0.543 (13). Weak intramolecular C—H⋯N and C—H⋯S interactions contribute to the stability of the molecular conformation. Intermolecular C—H⋯S contacts, weak C—H⋯π interactions and π–π stacking interactions [centroid–centriod distances = 3.832 (4) and 3.850 (5) Å] contribute to the stabilization of the crystal structure

Background: Changes in P wave parameters after circumferential pulmonary vein isolation (CPVI) have been previously identified. In this study, we aimed to determine the changes in P wave parameters surface electrocardiogram (ECG) after cryoballoon ablation (CBA) for atrial fibrillation (AF) and evaluate their relationship with AF recurrence. Methods: Sixty-one patients (mean age 53 ± 11 years, 50.8% male) with paroxysmal AF who underwent CBA were enrolled. A surface ECG was obtained from all patients immediately before the procedure, and repeated 12 hours after the procedure. P wave amplitude (Pamp), P wave duration (Pwd), and P wave dispersion (Pdis) values in preprocedural and postprocedural ECGs were measured and compared. Recurrence rates of AF in 3, 6, and 9 months following ablation were recorded for all patients. Changes in P wave parameters were compared between patients with and without AF recurrence. Results: Compared to preprocedural measurements, Pamp (from 0.58 ± 0.18 mV at baseline to 0.48 ± 0.17 mV, P 0.05). Conclusion: Pamp, Pwd, and Pdis parameters exhibited significant decrease after CBA compared to preprocedural measurements. Decreased Pamp was shown to be a predictor for good clinical outcomes following CBA

This thesis aims to provide evidence on the relations between productivity, industrial structure, and labour markets for countries with different characteristics from 1965 to 1999. In order to do so, we first examine manufacturing industry production and trade with respect to both technology orientation and intensity, the impact of structural change on productivity growth, and the existence of convergence in industrial structures. Second, this study investigates the impact of labour market and industrial structures on aggregate productivity in manufacturing. While descriptive analysis of manufacturing industry with regard to technological orientation and intensity shows changing industrial structures in favour of relatively more technology intensive production and exports especially in fast growing countries, decomposition analysis suggests that the impact of structural change on productivity growth is negligible for most of the countries. The factor analysis revealed that although a general structural convergence tendency among countries is not observed, fast growing countries have converged their industrial structure towards those of industrialised countries. Finally, econometric estimation results also showed that while wage flexibility is detrimental to productivity in manufacturing, regulations in labour markets may foster productivity growth.Ph.D. - Doctoral Progra
