    Identification and mapping of quantitative resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) in Solanum habrochaites LA1777

    Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) can have devastating effects on tomato production over the whole world. Most of the commercial cultivars of tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, are susceptible. Qualitative and quantitative resistance has been described in wild relatives of tomato. In general qualitative resistance can more easily be overcome by newly evolved isolates. Screening of three S. habrochaites accessions (LA1033, LA2099 and LA1777) through a whole plant assay showed that accession LA1777 had a good level of resistance to several isolates of P. infestans. To explore the potential in this wild species, an introgression line (IL) population of S. habrochaites LA1777 was used to screen individual chromosome regions of the wild species by a detached leaf assay. Two major isolates (T1,2 and T1,2,4) were used and two parameters were measured: lesion size (LS), and disease incidence (DI). Substantial variation was observed between the individual lines. QTLs were identified for LS but not for DI. The presence of five QTLs derived from LA1777 (Rlbq4a, Rlbq4b, Rlbq7, Rlbq8 and Rlbq12) results in unambiguous higher levels of resistance.     Seedling salt tolerance in tomato

    Soils with higher concentrations of salt are becoming more and more a constraint for many crops to obtain high yields. Wild tomato species, adapted to adverse environments, are a potential reservoir for genes underlying quantitative trait loci (QTL) related to salt tolerance in tomato. In this study two introgression line (IL) libraries derived from two different wild species, Solanum pennellii LA716 and Solanum lycopersicoides LA2951, were used to identify QTLs for salt tolerance in the seedling stage. In the S. pennellii IL library, four major QTLs were identified on chromosomes 6, 7 and 11. In the S. lycopersicoides IL library, six major QTLs were discovered which are located on chromosomes 4, 6, 9 and 12. Co-localization of QTLs on chromosome 6 in the two IL libraries and previously reports hinted that this locus might be conserved in the tomato crop. Three S. pennellii ILs (IL6-2, IL7-1 and IL7-5) harboring QTLs on chromosome 6 and 7 were crossed.     A review of subtropical community resistance and resilience to extreme cold spells

    Forecasted changes in global climate predict not only shifts in average conditions but also changes in the frequency and intensity of climate extremes. In the subtropics, the passage of extreme cold spells functions as a major structuring force for ecological communities, and can incur substantial losses to biodiversity, agriculture, and infrastructure. If these events persist in the future, it is likely that their effects on subtropical communities and ecosystems will become more pronounced, as tropical species migrate poleward. Recent extreme cold spells in subtropical China (2008) and United States (2010) occurred in ecosystems that are the subject of long-term ecological study, enabling key questions about cold spell affects to be addressed. In this study, we (1) discuss the meteorological drivers that resulted in these two extreme cold spells, and (2) use findings from case studies published in the Ecosphere Special Feature on effects of extreme cold spells on the dynamics of subtropical communities, and on poleward expansion of tropical species and other previously published works to identify consistencies of subtropical community resilience and resistance to extreme cold spells. In this review, we highlight three consistent findings related to this particularly type of extreme climate event: (1) cold spells drive predictable community change in the subtropics by altering ratios of coexisting tropical and temperate species; (2) certain landscape features consistently affect subtropical resistance and resilience to extreme cold spells; and (3) native tropical species are more resistant and resilient to extreme cold spells than tropical nonnative taxa. Our review should improve forecasts of the response of subtropical community dynamics in scenarios where extreme cold spells either increase or decrease in frequency and intensity

    Evaluation of a chiral cubane-based Schiff base ligand in asymmetric catalysis reactions

    Recently, a novel chiral cubane-based Schiff base ligand was reported to yield modest enantioselectivity in the Henry reaction. To further explore the utility of this ligand in other asymmetric organic transformations, we evaluated its stereoselectivity in cyclopropanation and Michael addition reactions. Although there was no increase in stereocontrol, upon computational evaluation using both M06L and B3LYP calculations, it was revealed that a pseudo six-membered ring exists, through H-bonding of a cubyl hydrogen to the copper core.     Association Between Metabolic Overweight/Obesity Phenotypes and Readmission Risk in Patients With Lung Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study

    BACKGROUND: Increased body mass index (BMI) and metabolic abnormalities are controversial prognostic factors of lung cancer. However, the relationship between metabolic overweight/obesity phenotypes and hospital readmission in patients with lung cancer is rarely reported. METHODS: We established a retrospective cohort using the United States (US) Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD). We included adult patients diagnosed with lung cancer from January 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018 and excluded patients combined with other cancers, pregnancy, died during hospitalization, low body weight, and those with missing data. The cohort was observed for hospital readmission until December 31, 2018. We defined and distinguished four metabolic overweight/obesity phenotypes: metabolically healthy with normal weight (MHNW), metabolically unhealthy with normal weight (MUNW), metabolically healthy with overweight or obesity (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy with overweight or obesity (MUO). The relationship between metabolic overweight/obesity phenotypes and 30-day readmission risk was assessed by multivariable Cox regression analysis. FINDINGS: Of the 115,393 patients included from the NRD 2018 (MHNW [58214, 50.4%], MUNW [44980, 39.0%], MHO [5044, 4.4%], and MUO [7155, 6.2%]), patients with the phenotype MUNW (6531, 14.5%), MHO (771, 15.3%), and MUO (1155, 16.1%) had a higher readmission rate compared to those with MHNW (7901, 13.6%). Compared with patients with the MHNW phenotype, those with the MUNW (hazard ratio [HR], 1.10; 95% CI, 1.06-1.14), MHO (HR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.07-1.24), and MUO (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.20-1.36) phenotypes had a higher risk of readmission, especially in men, those without surgical intervention, or those aged \u3e60 years. In women, similar results with respect to readmission were observed in people aged \u3e60 years (MUNW [HR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01-1.13], MHO [HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.06-1.35], and MUO [HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.16-1.41]). We also found increased costs for 30-day readmission in patients with MHO (OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.07-1.29) and MUO (OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.02-1.20). INTERPRETATION: Increased BMI and metabolic abnormalities are independently associated with higher readmission risks in patients with lung cancer, whereas increased BMI also increases the readmission costs. Follow-up and intervention method targeting increased BMI and metabolic abnormalities should be considered for patients with lung cancer.     Negative magnetodielectric effect in CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂

    Real part of complex relative dielectric value is relatively decreased as large as  ∼5 % from 50 K to 200 K in CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂, by applying a 6-T static magnetic field. CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂ is thus implied primarily by the negative magnetodielectric effect, as a unified dielectric system in which 1-D finite dipole chains of B-site titanium ions, coexist with a collective of polaron-like 3d-electrons of A-site copper ions: the dipole chains are thermally activated for lattice ionic polarization above 50 K, and suppressed by the short-range hop of these quasi-particles, while their long-range movement are for bulk electronic polarization above 151 K.This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 11004106) and the National 973 Project (Nos. 2011CB922101 and 2009CB623303)

    The Effects of Obesity and Metabolic Abnormalities on Severe COVID-19-Related Outcomes After Vaccination: A Population-Based Study

    Breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections of vaccinated individuals are being reported globally, resulting in an increased risk of hospitalization and death among such patients. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the modifiable risk factors that may affect the protective efficacy of vaccine use against the development of severe COVID-19 and thus to initiate early medical interventions. Here, in population-based studies using the UK Biobank database and the 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), we analyzed 20,362 participants aged 50 years or older and 2,588 aged 18 years or older from both databases who tested positive for SARS-COV-2, of whom 33.1% and 67.7% received one or more doses of vaccine, respectively. In the UK Biobank, participants are followed from the vaccination date until October 18, 2021. We found that obesity and metabolic abnormalities (namely, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension) were modifiable factors for severe COVID-19 in vaccinated patients (all p \u3c 0.05). When metabolic abnormalities were present, regardless of obesity, the risk of severe COVID-19 was higher than that of metabolically normal individuals (all p \u3c 0.05). Moreover, pharmacological interventions targeting such abnormalities (namely, antihypertensive [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0.64, 95% CI 0.48-0.86; p = 0.003], glucose-lowering [aHR 0.55, 95% CI 0.36-0.83; p = 0.004], and lipid-lowering treatments [aHR 0.50, 95% CI 0.37-0.68; p \u3c 0.001]) were significantly associated with a reduced risk for this outcome. These results show that more proactive health management of patients with obesity and metabolic abnormalities is critical to reduce the incidence of severe COVID-19 after vaccination

    Association of mitochondrial variants and haplogroups identified by whole exome sequencing with Alzheimer's disease

    Introduction: Findings regarding the association between mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are inconsistent. Methods: We developed a pipeline for accurate assembly and variant calling in mitochondrial genomes embedded within whole exome sequences (WES) from 10,831 participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP). Association of AD risk was evaluated with each mtDNA variant and variants located in 1158 nuclear genes related to mitochondrial function using the SCORE test. Gene-based tests were performed using SKAT-O. Results: Analysis of 4220 mtDNA variants revealed study-wide significant association of AD with a rare MT-ND4L variant (rs28709356 C&gt;T; minor allele frequency = 0.002; P = 7.3 × 10 −5) as well as with MT-ND4L in a gene-based test (P = 6.71 × 10 −5). Significant association was also observed with a MT-related nuclear gene, TAMM41, in a gene-based test (P = 2.7 × 10 −5). The expression of TAMM41 was lower in AD cases than controls (P =.00046) or mild cognitive impairment cases (P =.03). Discussion: Significant findings in MT-ND4L and TAMM41 provide evidence for a role of mitochondria in AD.</p

    The Classification of Obesity Based on Metabolic Status Redefines the Readmission of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma-An Observational Study

    BACKGROUND: The relationship between obesity and non-Hodgkin\u27s lymphoma (NHL) was controversial, which may be due to the crudeness definition of obesity based on body mass index (BMI). As obesity and metabolic abnormalities often coexist, we aimed to explore whether the classification of obesity based on metabolic status can help to evaluate the real impact of obesity on the readmission of NHL. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, utilizing the 2018 Nationwide Readmissions Database, we identified NHL-related index hospitalizations and followed them for non-elective readmission. The patients with NHL were classified as metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO) and obese (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy non-obese (MUNO) and obese (MUO). Readmission rates for each phenotype were calculated at 30-day intervals. Multiple COX regression was used to analyze the association of metabolic-defined obesity with 30-day, 90-day, and 180-day readmission rates in patients with NHL. RESULTS: There were 22,086 index hospitalizations with NHL included. In the multivariate COX regression, MUNO was associated with increased 30-day (HR = 1.113, 95% CI 1.036-1.195), 90-day (HR = 1.148, 95% CI 1.087-1.213), and 180-day readmission rates (HR = 1.132, 95% CI 1.077-1.189), and MUO was associated with increased 30-day (HR=1.219, 95% CI: 1.081-1.374), 90-day (HR = 1.228, 95% CI 1.118-1.348), and 180-day readmission rates (HR = 1.223, 95% CI 1.124-1.33), while MHO had no associations with readmission rates. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of metabolic abnormalities with or without obesity increased the risk of non-selective readmission in patients with NHL. However, obesity alone had no associations with the risk of non-selective readmission, suggesting that interventions for metabolic abnormalities may be more important in reducing readmissions of NHL patients

    Anatomical Network Comparison of Human Upper and Lower, Newborn and Adult, and Normal and Abnormal Limbs, with Notes on Development, Pathology and Limb Serial Homology vs. Homoplasy

    How do the various anatomical parts (modules) of the animal body evolve into very different integrated forms (integration) yet still function properly without decreasing the individual's survival? This long-standing question remains unanswered for multiple reasons, including lack of consensus about conceptual definitions and approaches, as well as a reasonable bias toward the study of hard tissues over soft tissues. A major difficulty concerns the non-trivial technical hurdles of addressing this problem, specifically the lack of quantitative tools to quantify and compare variation across multiple disparate anatomical parts and tissue types. In this paper we apply for the first time a powerful new quantitative tool, Anatomical Network Analysis (AnNA), to examine and compare in detail the musculoskeletal modularity and integration of normal and abnormal human upper and lower limbs. In contrast to other morphological methods, the strength of AnNA is that it allows efficient and direct empirical comparisons among body parts with even vastly different architectures (e.g. upper and lower limbs) and diverse or complex tissue composition (e.g. bones, cartilages and muscles), by quantifying the spatial organization of these parts-their topological patterns relative to each other-using tools borrowed from network theory. Our results reveal similarities between the skeletal networks of the normal newborn/adult upper limb vs. lower limb, with exception to the shoulder vs. pelvis. However, when muscles are included, the overall musculoskeletal network organization of the upper limb is strikingly different from that of the lower limb, particularly that of the more proximal structures of each limb. Importantly, the obtained data provide further evidence to be added to the vast amount of paleontological, gross anatomical, developmental, molecular and embryological data recently obtained that contradicts the long-standing dogma that the upper and lower limbs are serial homologues. In addition, the AnNA of the limbs of a trisomy 18 human fetus strongly supports Pere Alberch's ill-named "logic of monsters" hypothesis, and contradicts the commonly accepted idea that birth defects often lead to lower integration (i.e. more parcellation) of anatomical structures
