Chandra Observations of A Galactic Supernova Remnant Vela Jr.: A New Sample of Thin Filaments Emitting Synchrotron X-Rays
A galactic supernova remnant (SNR) Vela Jr. (RX J0852.04622, G266.61.2)
shows sharp filamentary structure on the north-western edge of the remnant in
the hard X-ray band. The filaments are so smooth and located on the most outer
side of the remnant. We measured the averaged scale width of the filaments
( and ) with excellent spatial resolution of {\it Chandra}, which are
in the order of the size of the point spread function of {\it Chandra} on the
upstream side and 49.5 (36.0--88.8) arcsec on the downstream side,
respectively. The spectra of the filaments are very hard and have no line-like
structure, and were well reproduced with an absorbed power-law model with
2.67 (2.55--2.77), or a {\tt SRCUT} model with = 4.3
(3.4--5.3) Hz under the assumption of . These results
imply that the hard X-rays are synchrotron radiation emitted by accelerated
electrons, as mentioned previously. Using a correlation between a function
and the SNR age, we estimated the
distance and the age of Vela Jr.: the estimated distance and age are 0.33
(0.26--0.50) kpc and 660 (420--1400) years, respectively. These results are
consistent with previous reports, implying that --age relation may be
a useful tool to estimate the distance and the age of synchrotron X-ray
emitting SNRs.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, ApJ, in pres

Rab5-mediated endosome formation is regulated at the trans-Golgi network
Early endosomes, also called sorting endosomes, are known to mature into late endosomesvia the Rab5-mediated endolysosomal trafficking pathway. Thus, early endosome existence isthought to be maintained by the continual fusion of transport vesicles from the plasmamembrane and thetrans-Golgi network (TGN). Here we show instead that endocytosis isdispensable and post-Golgi vesicle transport is crucial for the formation of endosomes andthe subsequent endolysosomal traffic regulated by yeast Rab5 Vps21p. Fittingly, all threeproteins required for endosomal nucleotide exchange on Vps21p arefirst recruited to theTGN before transport to the endosome, namely the GEF Vps9p and the epsin-relatedadaptors Ent3/5p. The TGN recruitment of these components is distinctly controlled, withVps9p appearing to require the Arf1p GTPase, and the Rab11s, Ypt31p/32p. These resultsprovide a different view of endosome formation and identify the TGN as a critical location forregulating progress through the endolysosomal trafficking pathway
Search for Sc-K line emission from RX J0852.0--4622 Supernova remnant with Suzaku
We searched for evidence of line emission around 4keV from the northwestern
rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 using Suzaku XIS data. Several
papers have reported the detection of an emission line around 4.1keV from this
region of the sky. This line would arise from K-band fluorescence by Sc, the
immediate decay product of 44Ti. We performed spectral analysis for the entire
portion of the NW rim of the remnant within the XIS field of view, as well as
various regions corresponding to regions of published claims of line emission.
We found no line emission around 4.1keV anywhere, and are able to set a
restrictive upper limit to the X-ray flux: 1.1x10^-6 s^-1 cm^-2 for the entire
field. For every region, our flux upper limit falls below that of the
previously claimed detection. Therefore, we conclude that, to date, no definite
X-ray line feature from Sc-K emission has been detected in the NW rim of RX
J0852.0-4622. Our negative-detection supports the recent claim that RX
J0852-4622 is neither young (1700--4000 yr) nor nearby(~750 pc).Comment: Published in PAS
Dilution and clustering of Fe in the rutile phases of TiO2 and SnO2
ABSTRACT: Dilute magnetic semiconductors of Fe-doped SnO2 and TiO2 with the structure of rutile were prepared in forms of powder and thin films using the techniques of sol gel and pulsed-laser deposition. We present the results of measurement of vibrational density of states of Fe impurity dopants in these oxides and demonstrate the cases of dilution and clustering. The oxygen pressure during the film deposition was varied between 10−1 and 10−8 Torr. In TiO2 films made at 10−1 Torr, Fe is diluted, however, in films made at 10−8 Torr Fe is clustered. The case of true Fe dilution in SnO2 is also shown. In spite of larger mass defect for Fe in SnO2 than that for Fe in TiO2 the dilute Fe species probe the phonon states in SnO2 more faithfully than in TiO2. This result is understood in terms of the combined effect of mass defect and nearest-neighbor force-constant changes. The impurity modes are more pronounced in TiO2 than in SnO2 due to ca. 10% difference of the lattice cell volumes between these two rutile oxides
Redox-inactive metals modulate the reduction potential in heterometallic manganese–oxido clusters
Redox-inactive metals are found in biological and heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts, but, at present, their roles in catalysis are not well understood. Here, we report a series of high-oxidation-state tetranuclear-dioxido clusters comprising three manganese centres and a redox-inactive metal (M). Crystallographic studies show an unprecedented Mn_3M(µ_4-O)(µ_2-O) core that remains intact on changing M or the manganese oxidation state. Electrochemical studies reveal that the reduction potentials span a window of 700 mV and are dependent on the Lewis acidity of the second metal. With the pK_a of the redox-inactive metal–aqua complex as a measure of Lewis acidity, these compounds demonstrate a linear dependence between reduction potential and acidity with a slope of ∼100 mV per pK_a unit. The Sr^(2+) and Ca^(2+) compounds show similar potentials, an observation that correlates with the behaviour of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II, which is active only if one of these two metals is present
One-Loop Self Energy and Renormalization of the Speed of Light for some Anisotropic Improved Quark Actions
One-loop corrections to the fermion rest mass M_1, wave function
renormalization Z_2 and speed of light renormalization C_0 are presented for
lattice actions that combine improved glue with clover or D234 quark actions
and keep the temporal and spatial lattice spacings, a_t and a_s, distinct. We
explore a range of values for the anisotropy parameter \chi = a_s/a_t and treat
both massive and massless fermions.Comment: 45 LaTeX pages with 4 postscript figure
One-Loop Matching of the Heavy-Light A_0 and V_0 Currents with NRQCD Heavy and Improved Naive Light Quarks
One-loop matching of heavy-light currents is carried out for a highly
improved lattice action, including the effects of dimension 4 O(1/M) and O(a)
operators. We use the NRQCD action for heavy quarks, the Asqtad improved naive
action for light quarks, and the Symanzik improved glue action. As part of the
matching procedure we also present results for the NRQCD self energy and for
massless Asqtad quark wavefunction renormalization with improved glue.Comment: 25 pages, 3 eps-figure
