Base-triggered avalanche transistor circuit used in a Marx bank pulser configuration provides voltage multiplication with nanosecond rise-time. The avalanche-mode transistors replace conventional spark gaps in the Marx bank. The delay time from an input signal to the output signal to the output is typically 6 nanoseconds
Assessment of density-functional approximations: Long-range correlations and self-interaction effects
The complex nature of electron-electron correlations is made manifest in the very simple but nontrivial problem of two electrons confined within a sphere. The description of highly nonlocal correlation and self-interaction effects by widely used local and semilocal exchange-correlation energy density functionals is shown to be unsatisfactory in most cases. Even the best such functionals exhibit significant errors in the Kohn-Sham potentials and density profiles
Skyrmion Generation by Current
Skyrmions, once a hypothesized field-theoretical object believed to describe
the nature of elementary particles, became common sightings in recent years
among several non-centrosymmetric metallic ferromagnets. For more practical
applications of Skyrmionic matter as carriers of information, thus realizing
the prospect of "Skyrmionics", it is necessary to have the means to create and
manipulate Skyrmions individually. We show through extensive simulation of the
Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation that a circulating current imparted to the
metallic chiral ferromagnetic system can create isolated Skyrmionic spin

Spectra and positions of galactic gamma-ray sources
The UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and Low Energy Gamma-Ray Experiment aboard HEAO-1 scanned the galactic center region during three epochs in 1977 and 1978 from 13 to 180 keV. The results are presented from the scanning epoch of 1978 September. Twenty-two known 2 to 10 keV source positions were necessary for an acceptable fit to the data. The spectra of the 16 strongest, least confused sources are all consistent with power laws with photon spectral indices ranging from 2.1 to 7.2. Acceptable fits to thermal bremsstrahlung models are also possible for most sources. No one source in this survey can be extrapolated to higher energy to match the intensity of the gamma-ray continuum as measured by HEAO-1 large field of view detectors, which implies that the continuum is a composite of contributions from a number of sources
Spectrum of the gamma-ray diffuse component observed from HEAO-1
The spectrum of the diffuse X and gamma ray background was measured between 15 keV and 4 MeV with the scintillation detectors aboard the HEAO 1 satellite. The apertures of the detectors were modulated on time scales of hours and the difference in counting rates measured the diffuse component flux. The observed spectrum is presented and compared with other measurements. At least two components are indicated, one below -100 keV and the other above. Possible origins are discussed

Black hole particle emission in higher-dimensional spacetimes
In models with extra dimensions, a black hole evaporates both in the bulk and
on the visible brane, where standard model fields live. The exact emissivities
of each particle species are needed to determine how the black hole decay
proceeds. We compute and discuss the absorption cross-sections, the relative
emissivities and the total power output of all known fields in the evaporation
phase. Graviton emissivity is highly enhanced as the spacetime dimensionality
increases. Therefore, a black hole loses a significant fraction of its mass in
the bulk. This result has important consequences for the phenomenology of black
holes in models with extra dimensions and black hole detection in particle

An automatic data system for vibration modal tuning and evaluation
A digitally based automatic modal tuning and analysis system developed to provide an operational capability beginning at 0.1 hertz is described. The elements of the system, which provides unique control features, maximum operator visibility, and rapid data reduction and documentation, are briefly described; and the operational flow is discussed to illustrate the full range of capabilities and the flexibility of application. The successful application of the system to a modal survey of the Skylab payload is described. Information about the Skylab test article, coincident-quadrature analysis of modal response data, orthogonality, and damping calculations is included in the appendixes. Recommendations for future application of the system are also made
TMDlib and TMDplotter: library and plotting tools for transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions
Transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs) are central in high-energy
physics from both theoretical and phenomenological points of view. In this
manual we introduce the library, TMDlib, of fits and parameterisations for
transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs) and
fragmentation functions (TMD FFs) together with an online plotting tool,
TMDplotter. We provide a description of the program components and of the
different physical frameworks the user can access via the available

Escape from a metastable well under a time-ramped force
Thermally activated escape of an over-damped particle from a metastable well
under the action of a time-ramped force is studied. We express the mean first
passage time (MFPT) as the solution to a partial differential equation, which
we solve numerically for a model case. We discuss two approximations of the
MFPT, one of which works remarkably well over a wide range of loading rates,
while the second is easy to calculate and can provide a valuable first
