Early Night Fog Prediction Using Liquid Water Content Measurement in the Monterey Bay Area
Fog is challenging to predict, and the accuracy of fog prediction may depend on location and time of day. Furthermore, accurate detection of fog is difficult, since, historically, it is often carried out based on visual observations which can be biased and are often not very frequent. Furthermore, visual observations are more challenging to make during the night. To overcome these limitations, we detected fog using FM-120 instruments, which continuously measured liquid water content in the air in the Monterey, California (USA), area. We used and compared the prediction performance of logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF) models each evening between 5 pm and 9 pm, which is often the time when advection fog is generated in this coastal region. The relative performances of the models depended on the hours between 5 pm and 9 pm, and the two models often generated different predictions. In such cases, a consensus approach was considered by revisiting the past performance of each model and weighting more heavily the more trustworthy model for a given hour. The LR resulted in a higher sensitivity (hit rate) than the RF model early in the evening, but the overall performance of the RF was usually better than that of the LR. The consensus approach provided more robust prediction performance (closer to a better accuracy level between the two methods). It was difficult to conclude which of the LR and RF models was superior consistently, and the consensus approach provided robustness in 3 and 2 h forecasts
Novel Microscopic Mechanism of Intermixing during Growth on Soft Metallic Substrates
Generic computer simulations using empiric interatomic potentials suggest a new, collective mechanism that could be responsible for mixing at heteroepitaxial interfaces. Even if single adsorbate atoms diffuse by hopping on the substrate surface and do not mix at the terraces, two-dimensional islands formed by nucleation may become unstable above a certain critical size and explode upwards forming clusters of several atomic layers. This process is accompanied by strong distortions of the underlying atomic layers, and on soft materials it can result in surface etching and incorporation of substrate atoms into the islands.Fil: Gomez, Liliana Maria. Sero/subtyping of Neisseria meningitidis isolated from patients in Spain.
To know the types of meningococcal strains in Spain, we serotyped and subtyped 743 Neisseria meningitidis isolates recovered between 1990 and 1992 from patients. A great number of serogroup B, serogroup C and non-groupable meningococci reacted with the serotyping reagents while many serogroup C and non-groupable isolates did not react with the serosubtyping reagents (78.2% and 54.8% respectively); only 8.9% of serogroup B meningococci were non-subtypeable (NST). Distribution of serotypes was similar in serogroup C and in non-groupable strains. Isolates showed great variability in antigenic phenotypes (71 in serogroup B, 20 in serogroup C and 25 in non-groupable meningococci). The most frequent antigenic combinations were 4:P1.15 (39.8%) in serogroup B, 2b:NST (55.8%) in serogroup C and 2b:NST (35.6%) in non-groupable meningococci.S
Legal gaps relating to labour safety and health in the maritime transport sector in Spain
Nowadays the labour sector is experiencing an important increase in the application of risk
prevention policies. Although these policies are very significant due to their repercussions in the
health of workers, we noticed important legal gaps in maritime sector regulations. Frequently sea
workers are legally abandoned, by exclusion or omission, at the moment of claiming for the
improvement of their working environment and the reduction of the negative consequences
derived from this negligence over their safety and health.
In the present paper we try to shed some light on this topic by analysing and examining minutely
the Spanish applicable risk prevention legislation for this sector. Moreover, the recommendations
of the International Maritime Organization are compared with the current application of the
law. At the same time, we present some possible solutions to such problems from an objective
point of view.

Introduction: the implementation of the collective of speech therapists is a necessity in order to take actions to the opening of the courses of studies and continuing training of professionals in the Logopedics studies. Objective: to analyze the significance of the speech therapists collective for the opening of the study courses and continuing training of these specialists. Methods: a pedagogical study in which theoretical, empirical and statistical methods were used to collect, interpret and process information related to the subject. Results: the study revealed the significance of the speech-language therapists collective for the initial and permanent training of the speech-language specialist through the accomplishment of the following functions: organizational, teaching-methodological, development and research, which favors the improvement of the mother tongue, prevention, diagnosis and comprehensive speech-language along with communication disorders. Conclusions: a didactic-methodological strategy was implemented that identifies the speech therapists collective as a subsystem or basic organizational level of the specialty.
Big Data is, without doubt, one of the most important areas of work for ICT professionals. No area or sector is not affected by the implications of this concept is incorporated; change some tools, strategies analysis and measurement standards are modified. One of the challenges and opportunities facing information professionals in this environment is related to literacy on data and research university libraries. Information literacy and digital literacy in libraries have been widely discussed and applied in the professional literature, but until recently little attention has been paid to literacy data. However, the new e-government initiatives and open data in the last decade have created public data widely available that are of great interest to researchers and students. Increasing the technological capacity to process large amounts of data (Big Data) offers new opportunities for both the layman as for the researcher
