4to.
Mitochondrial DNA Variation in Peruvian Honey Bee (Apis mellifera L.) Populations Using the tRNAleu-cox2 Intergenic Region
Mitochondrial DNA variations of Peruvian honey bee populations were surveyed by using the tRNAleu-cox2 intergenic region. Only two studies have characterized these populations, indicating the presence of Africanized honey bee colonies in different regions of Peru and varied levels of Africanization, but the current status of its genetic diversity is unknown. A total of 512 honey bee colonies were sampled from three regions to characterize them. Our results revealed the presence of European and African haplotypes: the African haplotypes identified belong to sub-lineage AI (13) and sub-lineage AIII (03), and the European haplotypes to lineages C (06) and M (02). Of 24 haplotypes identified, 15 new sequences are reported here (11 sub-lineage AI, 2 sub-lineage AIII, and 2 lineage M). Peruvian honey bee populations presented a higher proportion from African than European haplotypes. High proportions of African haplotype were reported for Piura and Junín, unlike Lima, which showed more European haplotypes from lineage C. Few colonies belonging to lineage M would represent accidental purchase or traces of the introduction into Peru in the 19th century
This investigation about nuclear families and housewife’s wishing to develop professionally was conducted in a medium-sized city in southern Veracruz Mexico. This study on comprehensive-interpretive (qualitative) modality presents the families nuclear systems. These families are seriously affected in their parental, fraternal and marital subsystems when the mother incorporates into an institution of higher education. Furthermore, this study offers the methodological process used as well as the results that were found. The effort started with the review of literature, followed by the choice of the theoretical frameworks available in order to approach the phenomenon to know it and intervene it in the future
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate protects the testis from damage generated by experimental cryptorchidism in rabbits
Cryptorchidism (CO) is a risk factor for
infertility in men. It is associated with an increase in
oxidative stress which alters the differentiation of the
gonocytes to spermatogonia. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate
(EGCG) is an antioxidant that acts as a free radical
scavenger and activates the antioxidant enzymes. The
aim of this work was to investigate if EGCG plays a role
in the protection of the testicle from alterations
generated by CO and its possible mechanism. Male
rabbits 7 days old were divided into four groups and
distributed as follows: 1) control (C) treated with EGCG
vehicle (V) (C/V); 2) C with administration of EGCG
from 65 to 120 days postpartum (dpp) (C/EGCG); 3) CO
induced by administration of 17β-estradiol plus EGCG
vehicle (CO/V) and 4) CO plus EGCG administration
(CO/EGCG). The animals were euthanized at 120 dpp
and their testes were processed to evaluate lipid
peroxidation, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD)
and catalase (CAT) enzymes as well as serum
testosterone (T) concentrations. In addition, the rates of
apoptosis, cell proliferation and histological alterations
were determined. The CO/EGCG group showed a
significant reduction in lipid peroxidation, a significant
increase in the anti-oxidant enzyme activities and
concentrations of T. Also, there was a significant
decrease in the histological alterations, absence of
gonocytes and active spermatogenesis when compared
with CO/V group. These results show that EGCG
reduces lipid peroxidation and increases the activity of
the endogenous anti-oxidant system which protects the
testes from alterations produced by oxidative stress
generated during experimental CO
Clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Cienfuegos, 2020-2021
Background: the significant increase in the numbers of COVID-19 patients in Cuba and the increasing incidence rate in the pediatric age represent an emerging health problem. Objective: to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of children confirmed with COVID-19 in Cienfuegos, during the first year of the pandemic. Methods: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, ambispective study. The study universe consisted of 104 pediatric patients diagnosed with the disease. The time horizon was from March 2020 to March 2021. The analyzed variables were: age, sex, origin, personal pathological history, initial symptoms, nutritional status, source of infection, laboratory results, persistence of positive RT-PCR, associated clinical manifestations to treatment and evolution. An individual medical history was taken during hospitalization. Results: the most frequent age was adolescence, discrete male predominance. More than 50% of the cases were asymptomatic. The most frequent initial symptoms were fever and runny nose. The 94% of those confirmed were autochthonous. The complementary tests showed enzymatic alterations associated with the viral infection. The 100% of the children had a favorable evolution. Conclusions: COVID-19 continues as a health problem worldwide. Children are a vulnerable group that needs continuous monitoring. The signs and symptoms can be similar to other viral respiratory infections, which require maintaining a high index of suspicion for COVID-19 in children.</p
