    X-ray tomographic microscopy analysis of the dendrite orientation transition in Al-Zn

    Recently, Gonzales and Rappaz [Met. Mat. Trans. A37:2797, 2006] showed the influence of an increasing zinc content on the growth directions of aluminum dendrites. and dendrites were observed below 25wt.% and above 55wt.% zinc, respectively, whereas textured seaweeds and dendrites were observed at intermediate compositions. Considering the complexity of these structures, it is necessary to first characterize them in further details and second, to model them using the phase field method. The so-called Dendrite Orientation Transition (DOT) was thus reinvestigated in quenched Bridgman solidification samples. The combination of X-ray tomographic microscopy and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis on a whole range of compositions, from 5 to 90wt.% Zn, allowed insights with unprecedented details about texture, growth directions and mechanisms of the aforementioned structures. We show that seaweeds rather than dendrites are found at all intermediate compositions. Their growth was confirmed to be constrained within a (100) symmetry plane. However, new findings indicate that the observed macroscopic texture does not necessarily correspond to the actual growth directions of the microstructure. Further, it seems to operate by an alternating growth direction mechanism and could be linked to the competition between the and characters of regular dendrites observed at the limits of the DOT. These characters, as well as 3D seaweeds, are observed in phase-field simulations of equiaxed growth and directional solidification, respectively. This study emphasizes the importance of accurate experimental data to validate numerical models and details the progress that such combinations provide for the understanding of growth mechanisms

    DMTs and Covid-19 severity in MS: a pooled analysis from Italy and France

    We evaluated the effect of DMTs on Covid-19 severity in patients with MS, with a pooled-analysis of two large cohorts from Italy and France. The association of baseline characteristics and DMTs with Covid-19 severity was assessed by multivariate ordinal-logistic models and pooled by a fixed-effect meta-analysis. 1066 patients with MS from Italy and 721 from France were included. In the multivariate model, anti-CD20 therapies were significantly associated (OR = 2.05, 95%CI = 1.39–3.02, p < 0.001) with Covid-19 severity, whereas interferon indicated a decreased risk (OR = 0.42, 95%CI = 0.18–0.99, p = 0.047). This pooled-analysis confirms an increased risk of severe Covid-19 in patients on anti-CD20 therapies and supports the protective role of interferon

    Improving metabolic health in obese male mice via diet and exercise restores embryo development and fetal growth

    Paternal obesity is now clearly associated with or causal of impaired embryo and fetal development and reduced pregnancy rates in humans and rodents. This appears to be a result of reduced blastocyst potential. Whether these adverse embryo and fetal outcomes can be ameliorated by interventions to reduce paternal obesity has not been established. Here, male mice fed a high fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity were used, to determine if early embryo and fetal development is improved by interventions of diet (CD) and/or exercise to reduce adiposity and improve metabolism. Exercise and to a lesser extent CD in obese males improved embryo development rates, with increased cell to cell contacts in the compacting embryo measured by E-cadherin in exercise interventions and subsequently, increased blastocyst trophectoderm (TE), inner cell mass (ICM) and epiblast cell numbers. Implantation rates and fetal development from resulting blastocysts were also improved by exercise in obese males. Additionally, all interventions to obese males increased fetal weight, with CD alone and exercise alone, also increasing fetal crown-rump length. Measures of embryo and fetal development correlated with paternal measures of glycaemia, insulin action and serum lipids regardless of paternal adiposity or intervention, suggesting a link between paternal metabolic health and subsequent embryo and fetal development. This is the first study to show that improvements to metabolic health of obese males through diet and exercise can improve embryo and fetal development, suggesting such interventions are likely to improve offspring health.Nicole O.     The impact of nonprofit brand orientation on organisational performance

    Brands have become increasingly important to many nonprofit organisations. Consequently, brand orientation has emerged as an attractive business philosophy in this sector. In this study, the relationship between nonprofit brand orientation (NBO) and organisational performance is examined. Findings suggest that there is a positive association between the dimensions of NBO and nonprofit organisational performance. Further, successful nonprofit organisations tend to be more brand-oriented than their less successful counterparts. Limitations of the study are noted and suggestions for ongoing research offered

    Vegan stories: revealing archetypes and their moral foundations

    Purpose: This study aims to identify the archetypes, moral foundations and plots associated with veganism through the stories told by vegan bloggers and the effect on mainstreaming of this ideology. Design/methodology/approach: Narrative data was collected from 15 publicly available vegan blogs. Underlying archetypes, morals and story plots were identified and presented as a “story re-told,” highlighting the context and content of what was being said by the protagonists and associated meanings. Findings: The analysis revealed three moral foundations on which vegan ideology is built: sanctity of life, enacting the authentic self and freedom. A universal hero archetype was also unearthed; however, the moral orientation of the storyteller (agency vs communal) dictated how these morals and archetypes were expressed. Research limitations/implications: Through the use of common story archetypes, master plots and moral foundations, a deeper understanding of vegans and the choices they make is facilitated, thus making vegan ideology appear less threatening. Storytelling plays an important role in establishing connections through commonality. Originality/value: This study applies cultivation theory, storytelling analysis and archetype theory to reveal how vegan bloggers counteract mass media cultivation of vegan stereotypes through the stories they tell. We offer a more robust description of vegans, moving beyond stereotypes, and the morals driving behavior. Moreover, a unique mechanism of mainstreaming is exposed that shows vegans connect with people by tapping into universal archetypes and morals that anyone can relate to and relive

    Developing and validating a multidimensional nonprofit brand orientation scale

    Operating in a progressively more competitive and turbulent environment, nonprofit organizations are beginning to recognize the need to become more "businesslike" and of the value of marketing in achieving a competitive advantage. Whilst marketing alone is not purported to be a "quick-fix" elixir in this regard, it does have the potential to make a useful and ongoing contribution to organizational performance in the nonprofit sector. Indeed, marketing scholars have for some time now been examining the role, function, relevance and transferability of various marketing principles and practices to nonprofit organizations. Surprisingly, the concept of brand management has been largely overlooked in this process. Using Keller's [Harv. Bus. Rev. 78 (2000) 147] brand report card (BRC) as a point of departure, this article describes the development of a reliable, valid and generalizable multidimensional scale to assess nonprofit brand orientation (NBO).
