The fight against infectious diseases. The essential role of higher-order thinking and problem solving
The development of a vaccine marks a breakthrough in the fight against infectious diseases. However, to eradicate highly infectious diseases globally, the immunization of large parts of the population is needed. Otherwise, diseases, such as polio, measles, or more recently COVID-19, will repeatedly flare-up, with devastating effects on individuals and, in the worst case, on significant shares of the world population. For example, polio has been almost eradicated over the past three decades through an unprecedented global effort, but complete immunization has not yet been achieved. In this article, we use polio as an example to show how the global effort of developing and administering a vaccine can be understood as solving a complex problem since it involves cultural, political, and geographical barriers that demand solutions in dynamically changing and highly versatile environments. Referring to the literature on problem-solving, higher-order thinking, and complex reasoning, we demonstrate how the ability to deal with real-world environments that are complex and dynamically changing, adapting initial solutions to new circumstances and collaborate efficiently with others, has been essential for this endeavor. We argue that problem-solving abilities form one basis for solving consequential world problems
The second most abundant dinophyte in the ponds of a botanical garden is a species new to science
In the microscopy realm, a large body of dark biodiversity still awaits to be uncovered. Unarmoured dinophytes are particularly neglected here, as they only present inconspicuous traits. In a remote German locality, we collected cells, from which a monoclonal strain was established, to study morphology using light and electron microscopy and to gain DNA sequences from the rRNA operon. In parallel, we detected unicellular eukaryotes in ponds of the Botanical Garden Munich-Nymphenburg by DNA-metabarcoding (V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene), weekly sampled over the course of a year. Strain GeoK*077 turned out to be a new species of Borghiella with a distinct position in molecular phylogenetics and characteristic coccoid cells of ovoid shape as the most important diagnostic trait. Borghiella ovum, sp. nov., was also present in artificial ponds of the Botanical Garden and was the second most abundant dinophyte detected in the samples. More specifically, Borghiella ovum, sp. nov., shows a clear seasonality, with high frequency during winter months and complete absence during summer months. The study underlines the necessity to assess the biodiversity, particularly of the microscopy realm more ambitiously, if even common species such as formerly Borghiella ovum are yet unknown to science
Zygosity Determination in Twin Studies: a Validation of Zygosity Questionnaires Using DNA in the German TwinLife Study
Lenau F, Hahn E, Peters A-L, Gottschling J, Thiel W, Spinath FM. Zygosity Determination in Twin Studies: a Validation of Zygosity Questionnaires Using DNA in the German TwinLife Study. TwinLife Working Paper Series. Vol 01. Bielefeld: Project TwinLife "Genetic and social causes of life chances" (Universität Bielefeld / Universität des Saarlandes); 2017.Zygosity determination using similarity ratings is frequently applied in twin studies. A correct determination of zygosity is essential for the estimation of heritability and environmental influences on phenotypes. Therefore, the present study examined the validity of two similarity questionnaires used in the German TwinLife study, in which data from 4,097 twin pairs and their families were assessed: twin children’s zygosities were determined with the Zygosity Questionnaire for Young Twins, which was administered in parent-report form. For adolescent twins, the Self Report Zygosity Questionnaire was used. For the present validation analyses, DNA samples of N = 328 twin pairs were collected via buccal swabs. In this DNA subsample, questionnaires were filled out by parents for n = 212 (aged 4 to 12 years) twin pairs while self-reports were collected from n = 116 adolescent twins (16 to 23 years of age). Using DNA-based zygosity as criteria, correct classification rates of 97% for parent- and 92% for self-reports were established and cross-validated. Additionally, classification rates based on a single item and variants of questionnaire based zygosity determination used in other twin studies were calculated and compared. Implications of incorrectly classified zygosity on genetic and environmental estimates in twin studies are discussed

in allen Umweltmedien Mikroplastikpartikel finden lassen.
In vielen
