    A Randomized Trial of the Impact of Amber Versus Blue Glasses on Sleep Quality, Energy and Mood

    The connections between sleep and mood disorders have prompted speculation in the field of psychology for some time. The human circadian rhythm, the biological mechanism which has a significant impact on the diurnal highs and lows of both wakefulness and mood, is impacted by a variety of endogenous and exogenous factors. One of the most potent of these factors is light, but it has recently been proven that the absence or presence of blue wavelength light (446-477 nm) has a particularly strong effect. With the use of blue light blocking amber lenses, one may be able to influence and regulate sleep, mood and potentially mental health for the better, especially in individuals for whom these cycles are disrupted. In a randomized trial, 27 students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, aged 18-26, wore either control blue or experimental amber lenses for three hours prior to their own calculated average bedtime for 12 days of an 18 day protocol. Participants completed self-report measures of sleep quality, mood, and somatic complaints on a daily basis, and more precise measures of sleep quality every 6 days. The first 6 days when they did not wear glasses were compared to the later 12 days during which they did wear the blue or amber glasses. There was a significant improvement in sleep, energy, and mood when participants wore the amber and blue glasses (p < .005), but there was no difference between the two conditions. Future directions could include the use of more objective sleep measures and testing glasses of different colors.Bachelor of Art

    Negative first impression judgements of autistic children by non-autistic adults

    IntroductionAlthough autism inclusion and acceptance has increased in recent years, autistic people continue to face stigmatization, exclusion, and victimization. Based on brief 10-second videos, non-autistic adults rate autistic adults less favourably than they rate non-autistic adults in terms of traits and behavioural intentions. In the current study, we extended this paradigm to investigate the first impressions of autistic and non-autistic children by non-autistic adult raters and examined the relationship between the rater's own characteristics and bias against autistic children.MethodSegments of video recorded interviews from 15 autistic and 15 non-autistic children were shown to 346 undergraduate students in audio with video, audio only, video only, transcript, or still image conditions. Participants rated each child on a series of traits and behavioural intentions toward the child, and then completed a series of questionnaires measuring their own social competence, autistic traits, quantity and quality of past experiences with autistic people, and explicit autism stigma.ResultsOverall, autistic children were rated more negatively than non-autistic children, particularly in conditions containing audio. Raters with higher social competence and explicit autism stigma rated autistic children more negatively, whereas raters with more autistic traits and more positive past experiences with autistic people rated autistic children more positively.DiscussionThese rapid negative judgments may contribute to the social exclusion experienced by autistic children. The findings indicate that certain personal characteristics may be related to more stigmatised views of autism and decreased willingness to interact with the autistic person. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the social inclusion and well-being of autistic people

    CX3CR1 is required for airway inflammation by promoting T helper cell survival and maintenance in inflamed lung.

    International audienceAllergic asthma is a T helper type 2 (T(H)2)-dominated disease of the lung. In people with asthma, a fraction of CD4(+) T cells express the CX3CL1 receptor, CX3CR1, and CX3CL1 expression is increased in airway smooth muscle, lung endothelium and epithelium upon allergen challenge. Here we found that untreated CX3CR1-deficient mice or wild-type (WT) mice treated with CX3CR1-blocking reagents show reduced lung disease upon allergen sensitization and challenge. Transfer of WT CD4(+) T cells into CX3CR1-deficient mice restored the cardinal features of asthma, and CX3CR1-blocking reagents prevented airway inflammation in CX3CR1-deficient recipients injected with WT T(H)2 cells. We found that CX3CR1 signaling promoted T(H)2 survival in the inflamed lungs, and injection of B cell leukemia/lymphoma-2 protein (BCl-2)-transduced CX3CR1-deficient T(H)2 cells into CX3CR1-deficient mice restored asthma. CX3CR1-induced survival was also observed for T(H)1 cells upon airway inflammation but not under homeostatic conditions or upon peripheral inflammation. Therefore, CX3CR1 and CX3CL1 may represent attractive therapeutic targets in asthma
