    Effects of Complete Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation in Full Potential All-milk Diets on Growth and Health of Holstein Bull Calves

    Pre-ruminant Holstein bull calves were fed two diets of pasteurized whole milk (PWM) in amounts that either limited intake or that maximized intake according to common commercial practice. Diets then were either supplemented or not supplemented with a full complement of vitamins and trace minerals (VTM) that met or exceeded NRC requirements. The objective of the study was to quantify the effects of the four feeding strategies on growth of calves, vitamin and mineral statuses in blood, and magnitude of acute phase inflammatory protein expression in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure. Calves were assigned randomly to one of four treatment groups (LM-, low milk, not VTM supplemented; LM+, low milk, TMV supplemented; HM-, high milk, not VTM supplemented; HM+, high milk, TMV supplemented) for 15 days. The HM strategy increased average daily gain in calves, but VTM supplementation did not improve growth during the first two weeks of life. Calves fed more milk had greater magnesium and copper concentrations in blood plasma, but treatment groups did not differ in acute phase protein expression

    Early Inflammation Disorder in Neonatal Calves

    In the present study, 30 Holstein calves were acquired at birth and were randomly subjected to one of six treatments. One treatment group was colostrum deprived (CD) and five other treatment groups were fed colostrum replacer (CR). Of the five CR groups, one group was not further supplemented (CR), one received vitamin A (CR-A), one received vitamin D (CR-D), one received vitamin E (CR-E), and one received vitamins A, D, and E (CR-ADE). Additionally, all calves were inoculated with Mycobacterium avium, subsp. paratuberculosis on d 1 and d 3 of age. One d after birth, CD calves exhibited lower IgG1, haptoglobin, and serum amyloid A concentrations in serum compared with the other five CR groups. These findings point to an endogenous early inflammation disorder in calves that are not fed colostrum

    Core competencies for pain management: results of an interprofessional consensus summit.

    ObjectiveThe objective of this project was to develop core competencies in pain assessment and management for prelicensure health professional education. Such core pain competencies common to all prelicensure health professionals have not been previously reported.MethodsAn interprofessional executive committee led a consensus-building process to develop the core competencies. An in-depth literature review was conducted followed by engagement of an interprofessional Competency Advisory Committee to critique competencies through an iterative process. A 2-day summit was held so that consensus could be reached.ResultsThe consensus-derived competencies were categorized within four domains: multidimensional nature of pain, pain assessment and measurement, management of pain, and context of pain management. These domains address the fundamental concepts and complexity of pain; how pain is observed and assessed; collaborative approaches to treatment options; and application of competencies across the life span in the context of various settings, populations, and care team models. A set of values and guiding principles are embedded within each domain.ConclusionsThese competencies can serve as a foundation for developing, defining, and revising curricula and as a resource for the creation of learning activities across health professions designed to advance care that effectively responds to pain

    Huella del agua del cultivo de tabaco en el área metropolitana del Valle de Lerma, provincia de Salta

    Se calculó la huella del agua (HA) del proceso de producción de tabaco (desde la etapa de trasplante hasta la cosecha) en el área metropolitana del Valle de Lerma, provincia de Salta. Se utilizó el software CROPWAT 8.0 desarrollado por FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) para la estimación de las fracciones de agua azul, verde y gris. Los resultados mostraron que el cultivo tuvo una evapotranspiración de 28,3 hm3 /año de agua azul, 20,2 hm3 /año de agua verde y 9,4 hm3 /año de agua gris. La fracción total de huella del agua azul se comparó con el consumo promedio de agua azul de los habitantes de la ciudad de Salta, indicando que el cultivo de tabaco demanda una cantidad de agua equivalente al consumo anual de aproximadamente la mitad de la población. El cálculo de la huella del agua fue capaz de mostrar técnicamente la intensidad de utilización del agua por una actividad productiva en el contexto de una región caracterizada por una incipiente urbanización y problemas de acceso al agua potable. Estos primeros resultados muestran que es necesario profundizar el estudio de la HA como potenciales indicadores de procesos de apropiación de recursos hídricos.Fil: Brito, Luis A..     Higher Serum Immunoglobulin G3 Levels May Predict the Development of Multiple Sclerosis in Individuals With Clinically Isolated Syndrome

    Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) is a first episode of neurological symptoms that may precede a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Therefore, studying individuals with CIS may lead to breakthroughs in understanding the development and pathogenesis of MS. In this study, serum levels of immunoglobulin (Ig)G, IgA, IgM, and IgG1-4 were measured in 20 people with CIS and compared with those in 10 healthy controls (HC) and 8 people with MS. Serum Ig levels in individuals with CIS were compared with (a) the time to their conversion from CIS to MS, (b) serum levels of antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus, (c) frequencies of T regulatory (Treg), T follicular regulatory (Tfr), and B cell subsets, and (d) Treg/Tfr expression of Helios. Serum IgG, IgM, and IgG2 levels were significantly lower in people with CIS than HC, and IgG, IgM, and IgG1 levels were significantly lower in people with CIS than MS. After adjusting for age, sex, and serum 25(OH) vitamin D3 [25(OH)D] levels, CIS was associated with lower serum levels of IgG and IgG2 compared with HC (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). People with MS had lower IgG2 levels (p < 0.001) and IgG2 proportions (%IgG; p = 0.007) compared with HC. After adjusting for age, sex, and 25(OH)D, these outcomes remained, in addition to lower serum IgA levels (p = 0.01) and increased IgG3 levels (p = 0.053) in people with MS compared with HC. Furthermore, serum from people with MS had increased proportions of IgG1 and IgG3 (p = 0.03 and p = 0.02, respectively), decreased proportions of IgG2 (p = 0.007), and greater ratios of "upstream" to "downstream" IgG subclasses (p = 0.001) compared with HC. Serum IgG3 proportions (%IgG) from people with CIS correlated with the frequency of plasmablasts in peripheral blood (p = 0.02). Expression of Helios by Treg and Tfr cell subsets from individuals with CIS correlated with levels of serum IgG2 and IgG4. IgG3 levels and proportions of IgG3 (%IgG) in serum at CIS diagnosis were inversely correlated with the time until conversion to MS (p = 0.018 and p < 0.001, respectively), suggesting they may be useful prognostic markers of individuals with CIS who rapidly convert to MS.ST, AJ, and MF-P are recipients of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Western Australia (MSWA) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.     Grandes transacciones de tierras como mecanismo de apropiación y exportación de agua en la región del Chaco salteño

    El fenómeno global de las grandes transacciones de tierras se potenció en los últimos años debido al aumento de la producción de alimentos. En Argentina, este fenómeno refleja también un proceso histórico de apropiación de tierra y de otros recursos naturales asociados, especialmente el acceso al agua. En la región del Chaco Salteño, el fenómeno se hace más notorio por la fuerte expansión de la frontera agropecuaria. En este trabajo se utilizó una base de datos global que se complementó con datos locales para identificar grandes transacciones de tierras, el tipo de producción en las mismas y otros datos que sirvieron para calcular la huella hídrica y el agua virtual asociadas a la producción agropecuaria en estas tierras. Estos dos indicadores permiten determinar la cantidad de agua utilizada para la producción de cultivos característicos de la región y también la cantidad de agua que es exportada a través de su comercialización en el mercado global de alimentos.The global phenomenon of large-scale land acquisitions intensified in recent years due to the increase in food production. In Argentina, this phenomenon reflects a historical process of appropriation of land and related natural resources, mainly water. In the Chaco region, land acquisitions have intensified together with the expansion of the so-called agricultural frontier. In this study, we estimated the water footprint and virtual water flows associated to large-scale land acquisitions in the Chaco region. Information on large-scale land acquisitions was obtained from the Land Matrix. Some information was verified during field trips to the study area.     International audienceThe Sonogashira cross-coupling of two equivalents of para-substituted ethynylbenzenes with 2,5-diiodothiophene provides a simple synthetic route for the preparation of 2,5-bis(para-R-phenylethynyl)thiophenes (R = H, Me, OMe, CF3, NMe2, NO2, CN and CO2Me) (1a-h). Likewise, 2,5-bis(pentafluorophenylethynyl)thiophene (2) was prepared by the coupling of 2,5-diiodothiophene with pentafluorophenylacetylene. All compounds were characterised by NMR, IR, Raman and mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and their absorption and emission spectra, quantum yields and lifetimes were also measured. The spectroscopic studies of 1a-h and 2 show that both electron donating and electron withdrawing para-subsituents on the phenyl rings shift the absorption and emission maxima to lower energies, but that acceptors are more efficient in this regard. The short singlet lifetimes and modest fluorescence quantum yields (ca. 0.2-0.3) observed are characteristic of rapid intersystem crossing. The single-crystal structures of 2,5-bis(phenylethynyl)thiophene, 2,5-bis(para-carbomethoxyphenylethynyl)thiophene, 2,5-bis(para-methylphenylethynyl)thiophene and 2,5-bis(pentafluorophenylethynyl)thiophene were determined by X-ray diffraction at 120 K. DFT calculations show that the all-planar form of the compounds is the lowest in energy, although rotation of the phenyl groups about the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond is facile and TD-DFT calculations suggest that, similar to 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene analogues, the absorption spectra in solution arise from a variety of rotational conformations.
