Characteristics of Postural Muscle Activity in Response to A Motor-Motor Task in Elderly
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate postural muscle performance of older adults in response to a combination of two motor tasks perturbations. Fifteen older participants were instructed to perform a pushing task as an upper limb perturbation while standing on a fixed or sliding board as a lower limb perturbation. Postural responses were characterized by onsets and magnitudes of muscle activities as well as onsets of segment movements. (Please see full abstract article
Examining Stakeholder Perspectives: Process, Performance and Progress of the Age-Friendly Taiwan Program.
Since Taiwans age-friendly city (AFC) program was launched in 2012, the central government has provided various resources to the countrys 22 local authorities, including budgetary support, policy advocacy, and consultation from a team of experts. This study examines stakeholder perspectives on the process, performance, and outcome of the AFC program. A 53-item questionnaire was developed based on the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline, including mechanisms and processes (20 items), outcome evaluations (23 items), and resource integration (10 items). There was a great difference found among scores between facilitators and experts for inter-exchange experience with local and international cities (40%) and monitor and revise indicators (37%) in mechanisms and processes, evaluate performance of indicators and action plans (37%) in outcome evaluations, and interaction between government and community (46%) and interaction between civil organization and senior society (39%) in resource integration. Clearly, facilitators showed overly optimistic assessments in AFC mechanisms and processes, outcome evaluation, and resource integration. The results showed disconnect between experts expectations versus actual practice conducted by facilitators. Implications of these findings are to integrate top down expectations with the realities of bottom up practice to design more realistic evaluations; continue to educate stakeholders about design, implementation and evaluation; and further integrate resources from government, civil organizations, and community

GPER-induced signaling is essential for the survival of breast cancer stem cells.
G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER), a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, mediates estrogen-induced proliferation of normal and malignant breast epithelial cells. However, its role in breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) remains unclear. Here we showed greater expression of GPER in BCSCs than non-BCSCs of three patient-derived xenografts of ER- /PR+ breast cancers. GPER silencing reduced stemness features of BCSCs as reflected by reduced mammosphere forming capacity in vitro, and tumor growth in vivo with decreased BCSC populations. Comparative phosphoproteomics revealed greater GPER-mediated PKA/BAD signaling in BCSCs. Activation of GPER by its ligands, including tamoxifen (TMX), induced phosphorylation of PKA and BAD-Ser118 to sustain BCSC characteristics. Transfection with a dominant-negative mutant BAD (Ser118Ala) led to reduced cell survival. Taken together, GPER and its downstream signaling play a key role in maintaining the stemness of BCSCs, suggesting that GPER is a potential therapeutic target for eradicating BCSCs
BIOMECHANICAL EFFECT OF GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAM USING STABILITY BALL ON THE COUNTER MOVEMENT JUMP
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the training effect of three-month group exercise program using stability ball. Ten female subjects were recruited to join this group exercise class for three months. The biomechanical parameters of counter-movement jump were collected before and after class. The average of maximal jumping height and the take-off velocity have significantly increased after three months. The group exercise program accoring American College of Sport Medicine trainig guideline which was designed in this study was helpful to increase the jump height of counter movement jump and to improve the biomechanical parameters of the landing
Internationalization in Higher Education – International Student’s Chinese Learning as Serious Leisure in Taiwan
Due to the economic and commercial rise of China, the economic value, political value, and instrumental advantages produced by Chinese have become more significant. The fever for learning Chinese continues to intensify all over the world, and Chinese instruction has become increasingly popular. Taiwan is a country with Chinese as its official language; and an important issue rose in international educational policy is how to attract international students to study Chinese in Taiwan. At the same time, Taiwan has promoted the internationalization of universities in the recent years; it hopes to elevate the visibility of its universities on the international stage, and intends to broaden diplomacy and promote economic development. This study found that international students who came to Taiwan to learn Chinese tended to be Asians. The different original residence locations of international students would significantly affect learning Chinese as serious leisure. International students who rented apartments with others off-campus or who chose home-stays had greater life planning, effort in Chinese learning, continuous benefits from Chinese learning, and a sense of community identification with their learning peers, as compared to international students who lived in school dormitories or lived alone off-campus. International students who had mor e disposable income each month were more likely to gain lasting benefits from Chinese learning and strong community identification with their learning peers. Key words: International education; International students; Chinese learning; Language learning as serious leisure Resumé: En raison de l'essor économique et commercial de la Chine, la valeur économique, la valeur politique et les avantages instrumentaux produits par les Chinois sont devenus plus importants. L'enthouiasme pour apprendre le chinois continue de s'intensifier dans le monde entier, et l'enseignement du chinois est devenu de plus en plus populaire. La langue officielle de Taiwan est le chinois, et l'une des questions importantes dans la politique éducative internationale est de savoir comment attirer des étudiants étrangers à étudier le chinois à Taiwan. En même temps, Taiwan a favorisé l'internationalisation des universités dans les années récentes. Il espère rehausser la visibilité de ses universités sur la scène internationale et il a l'intention d'élargir la diplomatie et promouvoir le développement économique. Cette étude a révélé que les étudiants étrangers qui sont venus à Taiwan pour apprendre le chinois sont plutôt des Asiatiques. Les localisations différentes de résidence originale des étudiants étrangers auraient une influence significative sur leur apprentissage du chinois en tant que loisir sérieux. Les étudiants étrangers qui ont loué des appartements avec d'autres étudiants en dehors du campus ou ceux qui ont choisi une famille d'acceuil avaient une planification de vie plus longue et un effort d'apprendre le Chinois plus grand. Ils bénéficiaient des avantages continus de l'apprentissage du chinois et avaient un sentiment d'identification de communauté avec leurs partenaires de l'apprentissage, par rapport aux étudiants étrangers qui vivaient dans les dortoirs scolaires ou vivaient seuls en dehors du campus. Les étudiants étrangers qui avaient un revenu disponible plus élevé chaque mois étaient plus susceptibles d'obtenir des avantages durables de l'apprentissage du chinois et avaient une identification forte de communauté avec leurs partenaire de l'apprentissage. Drivers of eHealth Adoption: Linking eHealth Adoption to Service Concept
Researchers and practitioners are keenly interested in understanding what drives eHealth adoption in recent years. This is largely because, while eHealth can lead to cost-effective and quality health care, the actual adoption rate of eHealth remains low across countries. In prior literature, it was clearly indicated that well-designed eHealth services are critical to eHealth adoption. In this study, our findings further show that, what may motivate patients’ adoption is more strongly associated with the design of eHealth caring service, and the design of eHealth IT service is more likely to be associated with patients’ continual use
Effect of Corrosion on the Shear Transfer Behavior of Stud Shear Connectors
The effect of corrosion on the shear transfer behavior of stud shear connectors was investigated in this study. Experimental investigation was performed using an innovative test setup for single stud shear connector. Two series of specimens having different stud diameters were fabricated and tested. The test specimens were firstly corroded to different corrosion rates by electronic accelerating method. Loading test were then performed to obtain the load-slip curves and ultimate strengths of corroded test specimens. Corrosion rates were measured from the studs obtained from the failure test specimens. Test results were compared with standard push out test specimens having the similar corrosion rates. It is shown that the test results obtained from the single stud shear connectors are conservative compared with the corroded push test specimens, which prove the validation of single stud shear connector test method. Magnon-induced non-Markovian friction of a domain wall in a ferromagnet
Motivated by the recent study on the quasiparticle-induced friction of
solitons in superfluids, we theoretically study magnon-induced intrinsic
friction of a domain wall in a one-dimensional ferromagnet. To this end, we
start by obtaining the hitherto overlooked dissipative interaction of a domain
wall and its quantum magnon bath to linear order in the domain-wall velocity
and to quadratic order in magnon fields. An exact expression for the pertinent
scattering matrix is obtained with the aid of supersymmetric quantum mechanics.
We then derive the magnon-induced frictional force on a domain wall in two
different frameworks: time-dependent perturbation theory in quantum mechanics
and the Keldysh formalism, which yield identical results. The latter, in
particular, allows us to verify the fluctuation-dissipation theorem explicitly
by providing both the frictional force and the correlator of the associated
stochastic Langevin force. The potential for magnons induced by a domain wall
is reflectionless, and thus the resultant frictional force is non-Markovian
similarly to the case of solitons in superfluids. They share an intriguing
connection to the Abraham-Lorentz force that is well-known for its causality
paradox. The dynamical responses of a domain wall are studied under a few
simple circumstances, where the non-Markovian nature of the frictional force
can be probed experimentally. Our work, in conjunction with the previous study
on solitons in superfluids, shows that the macroscopic frictional force on
solitons can serve as an effective probe of the microscopic degrees of freedom
