Migrant Students Achieving California State Standards Through Migrant Educational Programs

    Get PDF
Within the United States of America education systems, one of the most disadvantaged populations is migrant students because of their linguistic and cultural barriers, poverty, immigration status, and frequent mobility. These barriers disrupt the education opportunities for migrant students and their ability to master the California State Standards. To decrease these barriers, Migrant Education Programs (MEP) began implementing diverse programs nation-wide to support and advocate for migrant students, their parents, and the community. MEP has shown to increase graduation rates in Latino children. Additionally, migrant educators provide multiple supports and resources to children and parents. California is a sanctuary for immigrants; this research provides firsthand knowledge of the MEP- from two migrant educators within Monterey County, and an interview conducted with a California Mini Corps coordinator

Improving Infection Management of the Institutionalized Elderly

Abstract As the elderly population rapidly grows in the United States, the burden of managing infection in long-term care facilities (LTCF) escalates. The use of evidence-based infection identification algorithms for early recognition and treatment of pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTI) and skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) was evaluated at a Midwest suburban 110-bed long-term care facility. Focus group sessions were conducted at the facility with four nurse practitioners, the medical director, eight nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) prior to an educational in-service which was provided to all staff at the facility. As criteria of infection were reported, nurses verified assessments and initiated algorithm use. The algorithm provided targeted intervention protocol in communicating to primary care providers, implementing, and documenting plan of care for the patient. During the 30 day use of algorithms, infection surveillance, complication, and hospital transfers improved. Further research is recommended on the effectiveness of the algorithm and long-term infection identification and management for implementation periods longer than 30 days

Transformation from Within: Grounded Practice of Teachers amidst Cultural Change

Francis High School (pseudonym) was opened in Los Angeles during the 1960s in response the Civil Rights issues facing the African American community at the time. In 2001, after years of declining enrollment, Francis High School became a Jesuit owned and operated school and began operating under the Cristo Rey financial model. Despite its historical presence in the community and its rich athletic and academic legacies, the demand for a dynamic approach to education was imminent. Fortunately, a transformation ensued as the school’s mission, goals, and policies changed in order to become more aligned with their new Jesuit, Cristo Rey identity. This article examines the experiences of three teachers who were present during the time of Francis High’s transition, and considers how their practices and outlooks supported the transformation process for the school community. Utilizing the tenets of culturally responsive pedagogy, this article analyzes their influence on the new school culture

Study of a viscous Λ\LambdaWDM model: Near equilibrium condition, entropy production, and cosmological constraints

In this paper, we investigated the cosmological evolution of an exact solution recently found in [N. Cruz, E. Gonz\'alez, and J. Jovel, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{105}, 024047 (2022)], which describe a viscous warm Λ\LambdaDM model (Λ\LambdaWDM) at late times, where the DM component obeys a polytropic equation of state (EoS), which experience dissipative effects with a bulk viscosity proportional to its the energy density. This solution has the particularity of having a very similar behavior to the Λ\LambdaCDM model for small values of dissipation, evolving also to a de Sitter type expansion in the very far future. We explore firstly the thermodynamic consistences of this solution in the framework of Eckart's theory of non-perfect fluids, focusing on the fulfillment of the two following conditions: the near equilibrium and the positiveness of the entropy production. We explore the range of parameters of the model that allow fulfilling the two conditions at the same time, founding that a viscous WDM component is compatible with both conditions, being in this sense, a viable model from the thermodynamic point of view. Besides, we use thermodynamics analysis to define the best prior definition for the cosmological parameters related to warmness and dissipation. We also show that this viscous Λ\LambdaWDM model can describe the combined SNe Ia + OHD data in the same way as the Λ\LambdaCDM. The cosmological data constraint at 3σ3\sigma CL allows an upper limit on the bulk viscosity, to be of the order of ξ0106Pa×s\xi_{0}\sim10^{6}Pa\times s in agreement with some previous investigations. Our results support that the inclusion of a dissipative WDM, as an extension of the standard cosmological model, leads to a both thermodynamically consistent and properly fitted cosmological evolution.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

ABSTRACT ∙ We present evidence supporting a hybrid origin of a hummingbird caught in a mist‐net in Reserva Biológica Uyuca, Honduras in 2011. Following a defined diagnostic approach, the individual in question showed intermediate characters in terms of plumage and measurements between Amazilia cyanocephala and A. beryllina, ssp. devillei. The hybrid combination of A. cyanocephala with the nominate subspecies of A. beryllina has been reported once before from Veracruz, Mexico.
