    Inhomogeneous minima of mixed signature lattices

    We establish an explicit upper bound for the Euclidean minimum of a number field which depends, in a precise manner, only on its discriminant and the number of real and complex embeddings. Such bounds were shown to exist by Davenport and Swinnerton-Dyer. In the case of totally real fields, an optimal bound was conjectured by Minkowski and it is proved for fields of small degree. In this note we develop methods of McMullen in the case of mixed signature in order to get explicit bounds for the Euclidean minimum.Comment: To appear in the Journal of Number Theor

    What do undocumented migrants experience when they try to access healthcare? How do they navigate the (often contradictory) challenges presented by bureaucratic systems, financial pressures, attitudes to migrants, and their own healthcare needs? This urgent study uses a grounded theory approach to explore the ways in which undocumented migrants are included in or excluded from healthcare in a Swiss region. Marianne Jossen explores the ways migrants try to obtain healthcare on their own, with the help of NGOs or via insurance, and how they cope if they fail, whether by using risky strategies to access healthcare or leaving serious health issues untreated. Jossen shows that even for those who succeed, inclusion remains partial and fraught with risks. Based on interviews with migrants, health practitioners and NGO staff and using a rigorous academic approach, Undocumented Migrants and Healthcare is an important contribution to a vital contemporary issue. It is necessary reading for researchers in Public Health and Migration Studies, as well as government and non-governmental organisations in Switzerland and beyond. It will be of interest to anyone concerned with healthcare and migration in the twenty-first century

    Growth behavior of human adipose tissue-derived stromal/stem cells at small scale : numerical and experimental investigations

    Human adipose tissue-derived stromal/stem cells (hASCs) are a valuable source of cells for clinical applications, especially in the field of regenerative medicine. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the interest in hASCs has greatly increased over the last decade. However, in order to use hASCs in clinically relevant numbers, in vitro expansion is required. Single-use stirred bioreactors in combination with microcarriers (MCs) have shown themselves to be suitable systems for this task. However, hASCs tend to be less robust, and thus, more shear sensitive than conventional production cell lines for therapeutic antibodies and vaccines (e.g., Chinese Hamster Ovary cells CHO, Baby Hamster Kidney cells BHK), for which these bioreactors were originally designed. Hence, the goal of this study was to investigate the influence of different shear stress levels on the growth of humane telomerase reversed transcriptase immortalized hASCs (hTERT-ASC) and aggregate formation in stirred single-use systems at the mL scale: the 125 mL (= SP100) and the 500 mL (= SP300) disposable Corning® spinner flask. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations based on an Euler⁻Euler and Euler⁻Lagrange approach were performed to predict the hydrodynamic stresses (0.06⁻0.87 Pa), the residence times (0.4⁻7.3 s), and the circulation times (1.6⁻16.6 s) of the MCs in different shear zones for different impeller speeds and the suspension criteria (Ns1u, Ns1). The numerical findings were linked to experimental data from cultivations studies to develop, for the first time, an unstructured, segregated mathematical growth model for hTERT-ASCs. While the 125 mL spinner flask with 100 mL working volume (SP100) provided up to 1.68.10⁵ hTERT-ASC/cm² (= 0.63 × 10⁶ living hTERT-ASCs/mL, EF 56) within eight days, the peak living cell density of the 500 mL spinner flask with 300 mL working volume (SP300) was 2.46 × 10⁵ hTERT-ASC/cm² (= 0.88 × 10⁶ hTERT-ASCs/mL, EF 81) and was achieved on day eight. Optimal cultivation conditions were found for Ns1u < N < Ns1, which corresponded to specific power inputs of 0.3⁻1.1 W/m³. The established growth model delivered reliable predictions for cell growth on the MCs with an accuracy of 76⁻96% for both investigated spinner flask types

    SODA: Generating SQL for Business Users

    The purpose of data warehouses is to enable business analysts to make better decisions. Over the years the technology has matured and data warehouses have become extremely successful. As a consequence, more and more data has been added to the data warehouses and their schemas have become increasingly complex. These systems still work great in order to generate pre-canned reports. However, with their current complexity, they tend to be a poor match for non tech-savvy business analysts who need answers to ad-hoc queries that were not anticipated. This paper describes the design, implementation, and experience of the SODA system (Search over DAta Warehouse). SODA bridges the gap between the business needs of analysts and the technical complexity of current data warehouses. SODA enables a Google-like search experience for data warehouses by taking keyword queries of business users and automatically generating executable SQL. The key idea is to use a graph pattern matching algorithm that uses the metadata model of the data warehouse. Our results with real data from a global player in the financial services industry show that SODA produces queries with high precision and recall, and makes it much easier for business users to interactively explore highly-complex data warehouses.Comment: VLDB201

    Problembeschreibung: Bis zum Jahr 2030 werden geschätzte 65.7 Millionen Demenzkranke weltweit leben. Dabei weisen rund 71% der Demenzkranken Angstsymptome in Form von Agitation, Aggression und als Tages- oder Nachtrhythmusstörung auf. Nichtmedikamentöse Interventionen zeigen in bestimmten Bereichen die gleiche Wirksamkeit wie medikamentöse Interventionen. Jedoch sind sie in einem geringeren Masse erforscht und werden weniger intensiv gefördert. Musik wird in der Literatur als häufigste angstreduzierende Intervention benannt. Die Wirksamkeit von Musiktherapie auf Angst bei demenzerkrankten Menschen wird in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur bereits beschrieben. Jedoch existiert zur Thematik bislang keine deutschsprachige Literaturreview
