Immunopathogenesis of psoriasis
Psoriasis is an immunologically mediated disease caused by activation
of T lymphocytes that elaborate a Th1 type of immune response. Targeted
manipulation of the various mechanisms involved in T cell activation
and blockade or inactivation of the various proinflammatory cytokines
released by the process of T cell activation are methods used in
treatment of psoriasis by use of 'biologicals'
Metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia: how much is attributable to drug treatment?
Background: This study was planned to investigate new onset metabolic syndrome (MS) and its various components associated with two widely used second generation antipsychotics i.e. olanzapine and quetiapine in the management of schizophrenia using International Diabetic Federation (IDF) criteria. Methods: A total of 60 drug naïve patients with ICD-10 diagnosis of first episode schizophrenia, divided in two groups of 30 patients each, were randomly allocated to receive two different treatments i.e. olanzapine and quetiapine. Metabolic parameters were measured at day 0, then at 6 and 12 weeks. For categorical variables, ‘Chi-square test’ was used for comparison between the two groups. For continuous variables student’s t-test was used. Results: At 6 weeks none of the patient, treated with olanzapine, developed Metabolic Syndrome (MS), but among quetiapine group 3.33% (1 out of 30) developed MS. At the end of 12 weeks, 20% patients (i.e. 6 out of 30) had MS in olanzapine treatment group and 10% (3 out of 30) in quetiapine treatment group. Conclusion: Both olanzapine and quetiapine were found to cause comparable metabolic derangement and metabolic syndrome.
First Record of Lantana Mealybug, Phenacoccus parvus Morrison (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), as a Pest on China Aster from South India
Heavy population of lantana mealybug, Phenacoccus parvus Morrison, was recorded on China aster, Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees, in pest proportions at Bangalore, South India, both on the collar region and roots. About 25% of the plants were infested by the mealybug. Infested plants showed stunted growth and did not bear flowers seen in healthy plants. Field and mounted characters of P. parvus are presented in the pape
Study on the Fecundity and Gonado somatic index of Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1817) of southern coast of Maharashtra, India
Investigation of fecundity and gonado somatic index (GSI) of Rastrelliger kanagurta were carried out from March 2011 to February 2012. Fecundity was determined at different length, weight and ovary ranges of different individual fishes. Study revealed that at 5% significant level significant average absolute fecundity was found to be 1,08,266 and relative fecundity ranged from 407 to 1499. The number of ova generally increased with increase in length and weight. However, variations in fecundity with respect to length and weight were also noticed. The gonado-somatic index (GSI) was calculated for each individual fish (592 numbers) and was averaged for each month. The average GSI values were plotted against each month to analysed monthly variations. GSI showed wide variations between sex and it was highest for both males and females during the month of April and September, showing occurrence of more ripe individuals. Analysis of regression showed that there were significant relationship between the fecundity with the fish length, body weight and ovary weight
Ins1 Gene Up-Regulated in a β-Cell Line Derived from Ins2 Knockout Mice
The authors have derived a new β-cell line (βIns2−/−lacZ) from Ins2−/− mice that carry the lacZ reporter gene under control of the Ins2 promoter. βIns2−/−lacZ cells stained positively using anti-insulin antibody, expressed β-cell–specific genes encoding the transcription factor PDX-1, glucokinase, and Glut-2, retained glucose-responsiveness for insulin secretion, and expressed the lacZ gene. Analysis of Ins1 expression by reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) showed that Ins1 transcripts were significantly raised to compensate for the lack of Ins2 transcripts in βIns2−/−lacZ cells, as compared to those found in βTC1 cells expressing both Ins1/Ins2. Thus, transcriptional up-regulation of the remaining functional insulin gene in Ins2−/− mice could potentially contribute to the β-cell adaptation exhibited by these mutants, in addition to the increase in β-cell mass that we previously reported. We have also shown that lacZ expression, as analyzed by determining β-galactosidase activity, was up-regulated by incubating βIns2−/−lacZ cells with GLP-1 and/or IBMX, 2 known stimulators of insulin gene expression. These cells thus represent a new tool for testing of molecules capable of stimulating Ins2 promoter activit
Ecosystem service assessment of selected wetlands of Kolkata and the Indian Gangetic Delta: multi-beneficial systems under differentiated management stress
© 2019, The Author(s). A structured literature review using the search term ‘ecosystem services’ found few relevant studies relating to three contrasting wetlands in West Bengal: the unpopulated Sudhanyakhali Island in the Sundarbans National Park, the populated Gosaba Island separated from Sudhanyakhali Island by a narrow channel, and the East Kolkata Wetland (EKW). Subsequent structured review focused on the EKW using specific service-related terms located only 2 provisioning, 6 regulating, 1 cultural and 3 supporting services. Few services are currently recognized in the literature, with significant gaps in whole service categories. Significantly, there was no published evidence of a systemic overview of service production at these sites. Field observations and stakeholder dialogue informed assessment of ecosystem services using the Rapid Assessment of Wetland Ecosystem Services (RAWES) approach, adopted by the Ramsar Commission, on both islands and three discretely different areas of the EKW. The RAWES surveys found that 32 of 36 ecosystem services were produced from at least one assessed wetland site. Despite low sample size, statistically significant differences were observed in the range of services produced between the five wetland sites and the geographical range at which benefits accrued, explained by differing wetland characteristics and management regimes. Were decisions based solely on evidence provided by existing published knowledge, few ecosystem services would be considered and, potentially, whole ecosystem service categories might be overlooked. Importantly, there would also be no systemic account of service production and interdependencies. RAWES assessment serves as a practical, rapid and systemic approach, taking account of interdependent ecosystem services, supporting protection of the ecological character and achievement of wise use of wetlands. RAWES can also help redress perceptions that the values of peri-urban wetlands are currently under-represented

In Vivo Targeting through Click Chemistry
Targeting small molecules to diseased tissues as therapy or diagnosis is a significant challenge in drug delivery. Drug-eluting devices implanted during invasive surgery allow the controlled presentation of drugs at the disease site, but cannot be modified once the surgery is complete. We demonstrate that bioorthogonal click chemistry can be used to target circulating small molecules to hydrogels resident intramuscularly in diseased tissues. We also demonstrate that small molecules can be repeatedly targeted to the diseased area over the course of at least one month. Finally, two bioorthogonal reactions were used to segregate two small molecules injected as a mixture to two separate locations in a mouse disease model. These results demonstrate that click chemistry can be used for pharmacological drug delivery, and this concept is expected to have applications in refilling drug depots in cancer therapy, wound healing, and drug-eluting vascular grafts and stents.Engineering and Applied Science
Ramp Tear among Patients Undergoing Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in a Tertiary Care Centre
Introduction: Ramp tear is a specific injury that affects the posterior horn of the medial meniscus and its meniscosynovial or meniscocapsular attachments. The actual prevalence of ramp lesion is unknown due to the high probability of misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis caused by the low sensitivity of imaging modalities and poor visualization during arthroscopy. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of ramp tear among patients undergoing arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in a tertiary care centre.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among patients undergoing arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction after getting ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. Data from 1 March 2019 to 31 December 2022 was collected between 1 May 2023 to 30 May 2023 from medical records. The study included all patients who underwent arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Patients with a previous history of medial meniscus injury or repair and undergoing revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were excluded. Convenience sampling method was used. The point estimate was calculated at a 95% Confidence Interval.
Results: Out of 412 patients who underwent arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, 53 (12.86%) (9.63-16.09, 95% Confidence Interval) had ramp tears. The mean age of patients with ramp tears was 28.64±7.57 years. Among 53 patients, 42 (79.24%) were male and 11 (20.75%) were female.
Conclusions: The prevalence of ramp tears in patients undergoing arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in a tertiary care centre was found to be lower than other studies done in other international studies
