    Anovia circumclusa (Gorham), a neotropical lady beetle, recently was recorded in North America for the first time. Previously, only the adult form of this beneficial predator had been described. This paper provides a redescription of the adult and the first descriptions of the egg, larva, and pupa. Diagnostic characters for the genus and species are given, and intraspecific color variation in Anovia adults is discussed

    Human data interaction through design:An explorative step from theory to practice using design as a vehicle

    The increasing use of personal data and AI in everyday technologies has resulted in the amplification of complex and intertwined socio-technical challenges. These, often exemplified by data abuse, breaches, and exploitation, must be alleviated to support sustainable, resilient and human-centred data economies and positive global innovation. Here, we turn towards Human-Data Interaction, an interdisciplinary branch of research, inspired by HCI, that brings together diverse siloed perspectives to present three holistic response principles: data legibility, negotiability and agency. But, the emergent nature of this field calls for refinement of these theoretical tenets to help them translate into practical and tangible responses that are embedded in the technologies we create. We propose this workshop as a foundational step towards this agenda by opening these principles to the CHI community to encourage critique and dialogue about the strengths, weaknesses, value and opportunities of incorporating HDI into the design and evaluation of technology. The outcomes of this workshop, by engaging with HDI through Design, will form the basis for the next stages of research within HDI by contributing to foundational texts within academia and implementing HDI-infused systems within industry

    THE RELATIONSHIP OF ANTHROPOMETRY AND BODY COMPOSITION WITH RUNNING ECONOMY

    The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of anthropometry and body composition with running economy within a large heterogeneous cohort of runners. Locomotory energy cost was determined in ninety-four healthy male and female endurance runners across a range of performance standards. Various anthropometric and body composition measurements were taken manually and via DXA scans. The relationships between anthropometry and running economy were assessed using independent Pearson’s correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression. Three parameters, normalised neck and calf perimeters and normalised whole body bone mass explained 30% of the variance in locomotory energy cost. Low locomotory energy cost was related solely to parameters indicating relative slenderness of the body

    Recent Duplication and Functional Divergence in Parasitic Nematode Levamisole-Sensitive Acetylcholine Receptors

    Helminth parasites rely on fast-synaptic transmission in their neuromusculature to experience the outside world and respond to it. Acetylcholine plays a pivotal role in this and its receptors are targeted by a wide variety of both natural and synthetic compounds used in human health and for the control of parasitic disease. The model, Caenorhabditis elegans is characterized by a large number of acetylcholine receptor subunit genes, a feature shared across the nematodes. This dynamic family is characterized by both gene duplication and loss between species. The pentameric levamisole-sensitive acetylcholine receptor has been characterized from C. elegans, comprised of five different subunits. More recently, cognate receptors have been reconstituted from multiple parasitic nematodes that are found to vary in subunit composition. In order to understand the implications of receptor composition change and the origins of potentially novel drug targets, we investigated a specific example of subunit duplication based on analysis of genome data for 25 species from the 50 helminth genome initiative. We found multiple independent duplications of the unc-29, acetylcholine receptor subunit, where codon substitution rate analysis identified positive, directional selection acting on amino acid positions associated with subunit assembly. Characterization of four gene copies from a model parasitic nematode, Haemonchus contortus, demonstrated that each copy has acquired unique functional characteristics based on phenotype rescue of transgenic C. elegans and electrophysiology of receptors reconstituted in Xenopus oocytes. We found evidence that a specific incompatibility has evolved for two subunits co-expressed in muscle. We demonstrated that functional divergence of acetylcholine receptors, driven by directional selection, can occur more rapidly than previously thought and may be mediated by alteration of receptor assembly. This phenomenon is common among the clade V parasitic nematodes and this work provides a foundation for understanding the broader context of changing anthelmintic drug targets across the parasitic nematodes

    This paper presents the Living Room of the Future which explores new forms of immersive experience which utiliseObject Based Media to provision media that is personalised, adaptable, dynamic, and responsive. It builds upon previous research on Perceptive Media, Internet of Things Storytelling, and Experiential Futures which, in contrast to approaches that simply conflate immersion with increased visual fidelity, proposes subtle and nuanced ways to immerse audiences in a situated context. The room-sized prototype demonstrates this approach to immersion and includes connected devices that provide contextual data to personalise the media as well as physical elements that enhance the immersive experience

    Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a rapidly evolving therapy for acute lung and/or heart failure. ECMO, from a technical standpoint, is conceptually simple—however, it can be very challenging to implement therapy at the individual patient level as well as at hospital (or healthcare system) level. ECMO program development involves engagement of key stake-holders including physicians, nursing, and administrative leadership. The goal of this chapter is to outline some of the crucial steps in developing a successful ECMO program including highlighting the necessary resources, team members and structure, and basic program structure and function

    Impact of soybean derived chemical additive on the morphology of asphaltenes extracted from virgin asphalt, polymer modified asphalt and recycled asphalt pavement extracted binder through small-angle X-ray scattering by solids and solids in solution

    Recent work has shown that epoxidized plant oil materials work well as rejuvenators in recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). At the end of the 2017 construction season, a field trial mix with 30% RAP (total recycled binder content of 30.3%) was produced and placed in Northwest Iowa on US-18, east of Sheldon, Iowa. The rejuvenator (SR) was used at a rate of 0.125% by total mix weight. The mix design for the control section used a PG 58-34H. Due to Iowa DOT specification (recycled binder content greater than 20%) a grade bump was needed for the binder in the SR trial section (PG 52-40H). With 0.125% SR by total mix weight the grade bump was achieved. To better understand the chemistry behind this rheological improvement two chemical characterization methods will be explored (SAXS/USAXS, and IM-MS) on the asphaltene portion of SARA fractions of several binders (PG 52-34, RAP, PG 52-34 w/polymer (PG 58-34H), PG 52-34 w/SR, PG 52-34 w/RAP, RAP w/SR, PG 58-34H + SR, PG 58-34H + RAP, PG 52-34 w/SR + RAP, and PG 58-34H + SR + RAP)
