    “Teamwork done to a tee”:a golf caddie’s perspective on their perceived role and associated skills

    Objectives: This study explored what caddies perceive as their role and the associated skills required to support golfers. Method: Semi-structured interviews were completed with seven Professional male caddies from the United Kingdom (3 Caddies) and USA (4 Caddies). Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and reflexive thematic analysis performed.Results: Thematic analysis generated twenty-one lower-order themes and six higher-order themes, which were organised into three dimensions; (i) the demands of being a caddie; (ii) caddie’s expertise to do the role; and (iii), importance of support.Conclusion: Caddies demonstrate expertise in a range of areas from perceptual to intrapersonal skills when developing and maintaining effective golfer-caddie partnerships. Our findings highlight the skills the caddies require are role dependent. The findings from this study have implications on understanding future training needs for caddies in relation to maintaining effective golfer-caddie relationships and best practices to support caddies

    Physical activity counseling in overweight and obese primary care patients: Outcomes of the VA-STRIDE randomized controlled trial.

    The purpose of this 2-arm randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-month, expert system-based, print-delivered physical activity intervention in a primary care Veteran population in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Participants were not excluded for many health conditions that typically are exclusionary criteria in physical activity trials. The primary outcome measures were physical activity reported using the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) questionnaire and an accelerometer-based activity assessment at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Of the 232 Veterans enrolled in the study, 208 (89.7%) were retained at the 6-month follow-up and 203 (87.5%) were retained at 12 months. Compared to the attention control, intervention participants had significantly increased odds of meeting the U.S. recommended guideline of ≥ 150 min/week of at least moderate-intensity physical activity at 12 months for the modified CHAMPS (odds ratio [OR] = 2.86; 95% CI: 1.03-7.96; p = 0.04) but not at 6 months (OR = 1.54; 95% CI: 0.56-4.23; p = 0.40). Based on accelerometer data, intervention participants had significantly increased odds of meeting ≥ 150 min/week of moderate-equivalent physical activity at 6 months (OR = 6.26; 95% CI: 1.26-31.22; p = 0.03) and borderline significantly increased odds at 12 months (OR = 4.73; 95% CI: 0.98-22.76; p = 0.053). An expert system physical activity counseling intervention can increase or sustain the proportion of Veterans in primary care meeting current recommendations for moderate-intensity physical activity.     SIMPLIFIED MARKER SETS FOR THE CALCULATION OF CENTRE OF MASS LOCATION DURING BEND SPRINTING

    Simplified marker sets for the calculation of whole body centre of mass (CoM) location and associated variables (velocity, touchdown distance and turn of CoM) used in the analysis of bend sprinting performance were examined. CoM related variables were compared between a whole-body (13 segment), lower limb and trunk and lower limb model. Both simplified models showed strong agreement with whole-body CoM (Intraclass correlation: 0.873 - 0.998). The lower limb and trunk model (LLT) was the most accurate representation of whole body calculations, with acceptably low differences in all variables examined. Therefore, the LLT model is recommended for future use

    Equivalence of Two Dimensional QCD and the c=1c=1 Matrix Model

    We consider two dimensional QCD with the spatial dimension compactified to a circle. We show that the states in the theory consist of interacting strings that wind around the circle and derive the Hamiltonian for this theory in the large NN limit, complete with interactions. Mapping the winding states into momentum states, we express this Hamiltonian in terms of a continuous field. For a U(N)U(N) gauge group with a background source of Wilson loops, we recover the collective field Hamiltonian found by Das and Jevicki for the c=1c=1 matrix model, except the spatial coordinate is on a circle. We then proceed to show that two dimensional QCD with a U(N)U(N) gauge group can be reduced to a one- dimensional unitary matrix model and is hence equivalent to a theory of NN free nonrelativistic fermions on a circle.     Temporal trends in symptom experience predict the accuracy of recall PROs

    Objective - Patient-reported outcome measures with reporting periods of a week or more are often used to evaluate the change of symptoms over time, but the accuracy of recall in the context of change is not well understood. This study examined whether temporal trends in symptoms that occur during the reporting period impact the accuracy of 7-day recall reports. Methods - Women with premenstrual symptoms (n = 95) completed daily reports of anger, depression, fatigue, and pain intensity for 4 weeks, as well as 7-day recall reports at the end of each week. Latent class growth analysis was used to categorize recall periods based on the direction and rate of change in the daily reports. Agreement (level differences and correlations) between 7-day recall and aggregated daily scores was compared for recall periods with different temporal trends. Results - Recall periods with positive, negative, and flat temporal trends were identified and they varied in accordance with weeks of the menstrual cycle. Replicating previous research, 7-day recall scores were consistently higher than aggregated daily scores, but this level difference was more pronounced for recall periods involving positive and negative trends compared with flat trends. Moreover, correlations between 7-day recall and aggregated daily scores were lower in the presence of positive and negative trends compared with flat trends. These findings were largely consistent for anger, depression, fatigue, and pain intensity.     Psychometric characteristics of daily diaries for the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®): a preliminary investigation

    Purpose - The Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO) Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) has developed assessment tools for numerous PROs, most using a 7-day recall format. We examined whether modifying the recall period for use in daily diary research would affect the psychometric characteristics of several PROMIS measures. Methods - Daily versions of short-forms for three PROMIS domains (pain interference, fatigue, depression) were administered to a general population sample (n = 100) for 28 days. Analyses used multilevel item response theory (IRT) models. We examined differential item functioning (DIF) across recall periods by comparing the IRT parameters from the daily data with the PROMIS 7-day recall IRT parameters. Additionally, we examined whether the IRT parameters for day-to-day within-person changes are invariant to those for between-person (cross-sectional) differences in PROs. Results - Dimensionality analyses of the daily data suggested a single dimension for each PRO domain, consistent with PROMIS instruments. One-third of the daily items showed uniform DIF when compared with PROMIS 7-day recall, but the impact of DIF on the scale level was minor. IRT parameters for within-person changes differed from between-person parameters for 3 depression items, which were more sensitive for measuring change than between-person differences, but not for pain interference and fatigue items. Notably, mean scores from daily diaries were significantly lower than the PROMIS 7-day recall norms. Conclusions - The results provide initial evidence supporting the adaptation of PROMIS measures for daily diary research. However, scores from daily diaries cannot be directly interpreted on PROMIS norms established for 7-day recall

    TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL OCCLUSION OF ADVANCED VISUAL INFORMATION CONSTRAIN EMERGENT COORDINATION OF ONE-HANDED CATCHING BEHAVIOURS

    Introduction Dynamic interceptive actions, like catching, are performed under severe spatial and temporal constraints. Here, behavioral processes underpinning one-handed catching was examined using a novel spatial and temporal occlusion design which enabled precise control of pre-release visual information of an actor and a fully coupled action response. Methods An integrated video and ball projection machine was used to create four temporal occlusion and five spatial occlusion conditions of an actor throwing a ball towards participants. Twelve participants’ hand kinematics and gaze behaviors were recorded while attempting to catch a projected ball synchronized with the video footage. Results Temporal occlusion findings revealed that when footage was occluded at earlier time points, catching performance decreased. Movement onset of the catching hand and initiation of visual ball tracking emerged earlier when footage of the thrower was occluded at a later time point in the throwing action. Spatial occlusion did not affect catching success, although movement onset emerged later when increased visual information of the actor was occluded. Later movement onset was countered by greater maximum velocity of the catching hand. The final stages of action (e.g., grasping action of the hand) remained unchanged across both spatial and temporal conditions suggesting the later phases of the action were organised using ball flight information. Discussion Findings revealed how catching behaviors were continuously (re)organized and adapted as information became available in task performance, first by using kinematic information of a thrower's actions, and then by ball flight information. This highlighted the importance of maintaining information-movement coupling during performance of interceptive actions, with these behavioral adaptations having important implications for research that assesses interceptive skills based solely on pre-ball flight information, as in many current video-based simulation paradigms.     Structure of the human clamp loader bound to the sliding clamp: a further twist on AAA+ mechanism [preprint]

    DNA replication requires the sliding clamp, a ring-shaped protein complex that encircles DNA, where it acts as an essential cofactor for DNA polymerases and other proteins. The sliding clamp needs to be actively opened and installed onto DNA by a clamp loader ATPase of the AAA+ family. The human clamp loader Replication Factor C (RFC) and sliding clamp PCNA are both essential and play critical roles in several diseases. Despite decades of study, no structure of human RFC has been resolved. Here, we report the structure of human RFC bound to PCNA by cryo-EM to an overall resolution of ~3.4 Å. The active sites of RFC are fully bound to ATP analogs, which is expected to induce opening of the sliding clamp. However, we observe the complex in a conformation prior to PCNA opening, with the clamp loader ATPase modules forming an over-twisted spiral that is incapable of binding DNA or hydrolyzing ATP. The autoinhibited conformation observed here has many similarities to a previous yeast RFC:PCNA crystal structure, suggesting that eukaryotic clamp loaders adopt a similar autoinhibited state early on in clamp loading. Our results point to a ‘Limited Change/Induced Fit’ mechanism in which the clamp first opens, followed by DNA binding inducing opening of the loader to release auto-inhibition. The proposed change from an over-twisted to an active conformation reveals a novel regulatory mechanism for AAA+ ATPases. Finally, our structural analysis of disease mutations leads to a mechanistic explanation for the role of RFC in human health

    The Merging System Am 2049-691

    Spectroscopic and photometric observations of the peculiar object AM 2049-691 are presented here. Its systemic velocity is V(GSR) = (10956 +-30) km/s, and the derived distance (H(0) = 75 km/s/Mpc) results 146 Mpc. A bridge is observed between two very distinct nuclei whose separation is about 10 kpc, as well as two tails that emerge from the extremes SW and NE of the main body and extend up to 41 and 58 kpc respectively. The spectral characteristics of the all observed zones are typical of H II regions of low excitation. The internal reddening is quit high, particularly in the NE nucleus. All the derived equivalent widths of the H(alpha)+[N II] lines indicate enhanced star formation compared with isolated galaxies, specially in the NE nucleus; the equivalent width corresponding to the integrated spectrum reflects starburst activity in the whole object, and is compatible with a merger of two disk galaxies. All the observed characteristics of AM 2049-691 indicate it is a merger, where a overabundance of nitrogen is detected in one of the nuclei, which has the most evolved population and would be the most massive one. The detected total IR emission is not very high. The integrated total color B - V corresponds to a Sc-Scd galaxy and its average integrated population is about F7 type. Indicative B - V colors of the nuclei, corrected for internal absorption, are in agreement with the spectroscopic results. The central radial velocity dispersions at the nuclei suggest that the most massive galaxy would be the progenitor of the SW component. The observed radial velocity curve shows the presence of two subsystems, each one associated with a different nucleus.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
