    Magnetic-field-induced superconductivity and superfluidity of W and Z bosons: in tandem transport and kaleidoscopic vortex states

    We show that in a background of a sufficiently strong magnetic field the electroweak sector of the quantum vacuum exhibits superconducting and, unexpectedly, superfluid properties due to the magnetic-field-induced condensation of, respectively, W and Z bosons. The phase transition to the "tandem" superconductor-superfluid phase -- which is weakly sensitive to the Higgs sector of the standard model -- occurs at the critical magnetic field of 10^{20} T. The superconductor-superfluid phase of the electroweak vacuum has anisotropic transport properties as both charged and neutral superflows may propagate only along the magnetic field axis. The ground state possesses an unusual "kaleidoscopic" structure made of a hexagonal lattice of superfluid vortices superimposed on a triangular lattice of superconductor vortices.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures; v2: discussions extended, matches the published versio

    Genetic structure of Balearic honeybee populations based on microsatellite polymorphism

    The genetic variation of honeybee colonies collected in 22 localities on the Balearic Islands (Spain) was analysed using eight polymorphic microsatellite loci. Previous studies have demonstrated that these colonies belong either to the African or west European evolutionary lineages. These populations display low variability estimated from both the number of alleles and heterozygosity values, as expected for the honeybee island populations. Although genetic differentiation within the islands is low, significant heterozygote deficiency is present, indicating a subpopulation genetic structure. According to the genetic differentiation test, the honeybee populations of the Balearic Islands cluster into two groups: Gimnesias (Mallorca and Menorca) and Pitiusas (Ibiza and Formentera), which agrees with the biogeography postulated for this archipelago. The phylogenetic analysis suggests an Iberian origin of the Balearic honeybees, thus confirming the postulated evolutionary scenario for Apis mellifera in the Mediterranean basin. The microsatellite data from Formentera, Ibiza and Menorca show that ancestral populations are threatened by queen importations, indicating that adequate conservation measures should be developed for protecting Balearic bees

    This letter presents quantum mechanical inequalities which distinguish, for systems of NN spin-\half particles (N>2N>2), between fully entangled states and states in which at most N1N-1 particles are entangled.     Supersymmetric Kaluza-Klein reductions of M-waves and MKK-monopoles

    We investigate the Kaluza-Klein reductions to ten dimensions of the purely gravitational half-BPS M-theory backgrounds: the M-wave and the Kaluza-Klein monopole. We determine the moduli space of smooth (supersymmetric) Kaluza-Klein reductions by classifying the freely-acting spacelike Killing vectors which preserve some Killing spinor. As a consequence we find a wealth of new supersymmetric IIA configurations involving composite and/or bound-state configurations of waves, D0 and D6-branes, Kaluza-Klein monopoles in type IIA and flux/nullbranes, and some other new configurations. Some new features raised by the geometry of the Taub-NUT space are discussed, namely the existence of reductions with no continuous moduli. We also propose an interpretation of the flux 5-brane in terms of the local description (close to the branes) of a bound state of D6-branes and ten-dimensional Kaluza-Klein monopoles.Comment: 36 pages (v2: Reference added, "draft" mode disabled; v3: two singular reductions discarded, appendix on spin structures added, references updated

    Sufficient conditions for three-particle entanglement and their tests in recent experiments

    We point out a loophole problem in some recent experimental claims to produce three-particle entanglement. The problem consists in the question whether mixtures of two-particle entangled states might suffice to explain the experimental data. In an attempt to close this loophole, we review two sufficient conditions that distinguish between N-particle states in which all N particles are entangled to each other and states in which only M particles are entangled (with M<N). It is shown that three recent experiments to obtain three-particle entangled states (Bouwmeester et al., Pan et al., and Rauschenbeutel et al.) do not meet these conditions. We conclude that the question whether these experiments provide confirmation of three-particle entanglement remains unresolved. We also propose modifications of the experiments that would make such confirmation feasible.Comment: 16 page

    Simplicity transformations for three-way arrays with symmetric slices, and applications to Tucker-3 models with sparse core arrays

    AbstractTucker three-way PCA and Candecomp/Parafac are two well-known methods of generalizing principal component analysis to three way data. Candecomp/Parafac yields component matrices A (e.g., for subjects or objects), B (e.g., for variables) and C (e.g., for occasions) that are typically unique up to jointly permuting and rescaling columns. Tucker-3 analysis, on the other hand, has full transformational freedom. That is, the fit does not change when A,B, and C are postmultiplied by nonsingular transformation matrices, provided that the inverse transformations are applied to the so-called core array G̲. This freedom of transformation can be used to create a simple structure in A,B,C, and/or in G̲. This paper deals with the latter possibility exclusively. It revolves around the question of how a core array, or, in fact, any three-way array can be transformed to have a maximum number of zero elements. Direct applications are in Tucker-3 analysis, where simplicity of the core may facilitate the interpretation of a Tucker-3 solution, and in constrained Tucker-3 analysis, where hypotheses involving sparse cores are taken into account. In the latter cases, it is important to know what degree of sparseness can be attained as a tautology, by using the transformational freedom. In addition, simplicity transformations have proven useful as a mathematical tool to examine rank and generic or typical rank of three-way arrays. So far, a number of simplicity results have been attained, pertaining to arrays sampled randomly from continuous distributions. These results do not apply to three-way arrays with symmetric slices in one direction. The present paper offers a number of simplicity results for arrays with symmetric slices of order 2×2,3×3 and 4×4. Some generalizations to higher orders are also discussed. As a mathematical application, the problem of determining the typical rank of 4×3×3 and 5×3×3 arrays with symmetric slices will be revisited, using a sparse form with only 8 out of 36 elements nonzero for the former case and 10 out of 45 elements nonzero for the latter one, that can be attained almost surely for such arrays. The issue of maximal simplicity of the targets to be presented will be addressed, either by formal proofs or by relying on simulation results

    Myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries: A comprehensive review and future research directions

    Acute coronary syndromes constitute a variety of myocardial injury presentations that include a subset of patients presenting with myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA). This acute coronary syndrome differs from type 1 myocardial infarction (MI) regarding patient characteristics, presentation, physiopathology, management, treatment, and prognosis. Two-thirds of MINOCA subjects present ST-segment elevation; MINOCA patients are younger, are more often female and tend to have fewer cardiovascular risk factors. Moreover, MINOCA is a working diagnosis, and defining the aetiologic mechanism is relevant because it affects patient care and prognosis. In the absence of relevant coronary artery disease, myocardial ischaemia might be triggered by an acute event in epicardial coronary arteries, coronary microcirculation, or both. Epicardial causes of MINOCA include coronary plaque disruption, coronary dissection, and coronary spasm. Microvascular MINOCA mechanisms involve microvascular coronary spasm, takotsubo syndrome (TTS), myocarditis, and coronary thromboembolism. Coronary angiography with non-significant coronary stenosis and left ventriculography are first-line tests in the differential study of MINOCA patients. The diagnostic arsenal includes invasive and non-invasive techniques. Medical history and echocardiography can help indicate vasospasm or thrombosis, if one finite coronary territory is affected, or specify TTS if apical ballooning is present. Intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and provocative testing are encouraged. Cardiac magnetic resonance is a cornerstone in myocarditis diagnosis. MINOCA is not a benign diagnosis, and its polymorphic forms differ in prognosis. MINOCA care varies across centres, and future multi-centre clinical trials with standardized criteria may have a positive impact on defining optimal cardiovascular care for MINOCA patients

    Lung emphysema and lung cancer: what do we know about it?

    Emphysema and lung cancer (LC) are two diseases which share common risk factors, e.g., smoking. In recent years, many studies have sought to analyse this association. By way of illustration, we conducted a review of the scientific literature of the studies published to date, whose main designated aim was to demonstrate the relationship between emphysema and LC, and this association's influence on the histology, prognosis and molecular mechanisms responsible. We included over 40 studies (ranging from case-control and cohort studies to systematic reviews and meta-analyses), which highlight the association between emphysema and LC, independently of smoking habit. These studies also report a possible influence on histology, with adenocarcinoma being the most frequent lineage, and an association with poor prognosis, which affects both survival and post-operative complications. Oxidative stress, which generates chronic inflammatory status as well as the presence of certain polymorphisms in various genes (CYP1A1, TERT, CLPTM1L, ERK), gives rise-in the case of patients with emphysema-to alteration of cellular repair mechanisms, which in turn favours the proliferation of neoplastic epithelial cells responsible for the origin of LC

    A perturbative solution for gravitational waves in quadratic gravity

    We find a gravitational wave solution to the linearized version of quadratic gravity by adding successive perturbations to the Einstein's linearized field equations. We show that only the Ricci squared quadratic invariant contributes to give a different solution of those found in Einstein's general relativity. The perturbative solution is written as a power series in the β\beta parameter, the coefficient of the Ricci squared term in the quadratic gravitational action. We also show that, for monochromatic waves of a given angular frequency ω\omega, the perturbative solution can be summed out to give an exact solution to linearized version of quadratic gravity, for 0<ω<c/β1/20<\omega<c/\mid\beta\mid^{1/2}. This result may lead to implications to the predictions for gravitational wave backgrounds of cosmological origin.Comment: 9 pages, to appear in CQ
