U.S. Unemployment Duration: Has Long Become Longer or Short Become Shorter?
The U.S. labor market has been experiencing unprecedented high average unemployment duration. The shift in the unemployment duration distribution can be traced back to the early nineties. In this study, censored quantile regression methods are employed to analyze the changes in the US unemployment duration distribution. We explore the decomposition method proposed by Machado and Mata (2005) to disentangle the contribution of the changes generated by the covariate distribution and by the conditional distribution. The data used in this inquiry are taken from the nationally representative Displaced Worker Surveys of 1988 and 1998. We provide evidence that the change in the unemployment duration distribution is mainly produced by the opposing effects of a sharp rise in job-to-job transition rates and an increased sensitivity of unemployment duration to unemployment rates. Compositional changes in the labor force played a limited role. We rationalize our findings by arguing that improved screening technology is likely to be the relevant underlying mechanism at work.
Frequência de cefaleia em trabalhadores de uma empresa de borracha no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Primary headaches may be responsible for absenteeism and a fall in the yield and productivity of work. The aim of this study was to establish the presence and frequency of primary headache among employees of a rubber shoe sole company, and its link to absenteism. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study carried out with help from the staff of the medical and social department of a rubber factory located in the municipality of Franca, São Paulo. METHOD: A questionnaire on headache characteristics was distributed to all employees. The returned and completed questionnaires were divided into two groups: with and without reports of headache. The headaches were classified into four main groups: migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), cluster headache and others. In terms of the reported frequency, headaches were also classified as chronic daily headache (CDH). RESULTS: The number of valid questionnaires was 392 (59%); 80.9% were from male and 19.1% from female employees. Headaches were reported by 120 subjects (30.6%), with 17.4% belonging to the migraine group and 8.9% to the TTH group. Migraine was more frequent (p < 0.001) among all participants and also among the women (p < 0.05). TTH was more frequent among the men (p < 0.05). CDH was identified in 14 individuals (3.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Headache was a common problem among the employees of this company and was a cause of absenteeism for 8.7% of the respondents to the questionnaire.CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: Cefaleias primárias podem ser causa de absenteísmo, e de queda no rendimento e na produtividade do trabalho.
DVB-T channels power measurements in indoor/outdoor cases
In this paper the analysis of the spectrum
occupancy in the TV band is provided based on the indoor and
outdoor measurements campaigns carried out in Poznan, Poland,
and Barcelona, Spain, in 2013. The goal of this work is to discuss
the stability and other important features of the observed
spectrum occupancy in the context of indoor/outdoor Radio
Environment Maps database deployment. Reliable deployment of
these databases seems to be one of the critical points in practical
utilization of the TV White Spaces for cognitive purposes inside
buildings and in densely populated cities.Postprint (published version
Prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes related to periodontitis and its risk factors in elderly individuals
Objective: The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes was estimated to increase with age and can reach 3.5%. The
purpose of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes in the elderly
patients who attended a dental clinic and to find common risk factors.
Methods: Male patients, older than 50 years, attended their first dental visit to the School of Dentistry for a period
of two years, and it was proposed to evaluate undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Periodontal, biochemical,
microbiological examinations, nutritional profile, and physical activity were performed.
Results: A total of 106 patients were examined, 6 (5.6%) had diabetes, and 37 (34.9%) had prediabetes without
prior diagnosis. The severity of periodontitis was greater in patients with diabetes. Most of the patients were
overweight and had increased systolic blood pressure. Patients with prediabetes and periodontitis had a low
adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Tannerella forsythia was present in more patients with periodontitis, and the
prevalence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is practically absent in groups with periodontitis, except for
the group with diabetes.
Conclusions: In the population studied, the prevalence of patients without a diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes
was very high and underestimated. The increased severity of periodontitis in patients with diabetes and in
conjunction with the high level of cortisol seen in patients with periodontitis, especially those with diabetes,
emphasize the dysregulation of the immunoinflammatory system.
Clinical significance: It is essential to add all this data to our dental practice to cover patient health with a broader
landscape.Junta de Andalucía Grupo de Investigación CTS113, Spai

Target of rapamycin (TOR) mediates the transduction of nutritional signals into juvenile hormone production
Anautogeny is a reproductive strategy by which females do not reproduce until they feed. Therefore, nutritional signals must inform the reproductive tissues, and cells that the organism has reached a nutritional status suitable for triggering reproductive processes. One of the possible pathways involved in anautogeny is the >target of rapamycin> (TOR) pathway, which has been described as connecting the nutritional status with growth, proliferation, and cancer. The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is an anautogenous species whose vitellogenesis is governed by juvenile hormone. In the present report, we describe the cloning of TOR cDNA from B. germanica (BgTOR). Expression studies showed that BgTOR is expressed in adult female corpora allata and fat body. BgTOR knockdown using systemic RNAi in vivo produced a severe inhibition of juvenile hormone synthesis in adult female corpora allata, together with a reduction of mRNA levels corresponding to 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) synthase-1, HMG-CoA synthase-2, and HMG-CoA reductase. In addition, there was a reduction of vitellogenin mRNA in the fat body, and ovaries did not grow. Analysis of TOR expression in corpora allata of fed and starved females suggested that TOR is not regulated at the transcriptional level. Nevertheless, there was a reduction in HMG-CoA synthases and reductase mRNA in corpora allata (but not in the fat body) of starved females, together with a dramatic reduction of juvenile hormone production and ovary development. Taken together, our results indicate that TOR knockdown mimics starvation in terms of corpora allata activity, and suggest that nutritional signals that activate juvenile hormone biosynthesis and vitellogenin production are mediated by the TOR pathway. © 2009 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (Projects BFU2006-01090 (to J. A new species of Diaphorocleidus (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalinae) from the gills of Argonectes robertsi (Characiformes) and new records of dactylogyrids parasitic on fishes from the Xingu River, Amazon Basin, Brazil
ABSTRACT Diaphorocleidus altamirensis sp. nov., parasitic on the gills of Argonectes robertsi Langeani, 1999 from the Xingu River, northern Brazil, is described. The new species differs from its six congeners by the morphology of the male copulatory organ (which comprises a coil of six rings), by the midventral vagina, and by the presence of only one pair of eyespots. It is the first species of Diaphorocleidus Jogunoori, Kritsky & Venkatanarasaiah, 2004 described from hemiodontid fishes. In addition, new host and geographical records of seven species of dactylogyrids found on fish from the Xingu River are reported
Btp Proteins from Brucella abortus Modulate the Lung Innate Immune Response to Infection by the Respiratory Route
Although inhalation of infected aerosols is a frequent route for Brucella infection in humans, it rarely causes pulmonary clinical manifestations, suggesting a mild or nearly absent local inflammatory response. The goal of this study was to characterize the early innate immune response to intratracheal infection with Brucella abortus in mice and to evaluate whether it is modulated by this pathogen. After infection with 106 CFU of B. abortus, the pulmonary bacterial burden at 7 days post-infection (p.i.) was comparable to the initial inoculum, despite an initial transient decline. Brucella was detected in spleen and liver as early as 1 day p.i. IL-1β and MCP-1 increased at 3 days p.i., whereas IL-12, KC, TNF-α, and IFN-γ only increased at 7 days p.i. Histological examination did not reveal peribronchial or perivascular infiltrates in infected mice. Experiments were conducted to evaluate if the limited inflammatory lung response to B. abortusis caused by a bacterial mechanism of TLR signaling inhibition. Whereas inoculation of E. coli LPS to control mice [phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)/LPS] caused lung inflammation, almost no histological changes were observed in mice preinfected intratracheally with B. abortus (WT/LPS). We speculated that the Brucella TIR-containing proteins (Btps) A and B, which impair TLR signaling in vitro, may be involved in this modulation. After LPS challenge, mice preinfected with the B. abortus btpAbtpB double mutant exhibited a stronger pulmonary polymorphonuclear infiltrate than WT/LPS mice, although milder than that of the PBS/LPS group. In addition, lungs from B. abortus btpAbtpB-infected mice presented a stronger inflammatory infiltrate than those infected with the WT strain, and at day 7 p.i., the pulmonary levels of KC, MCP-1, and IL-12 were higher in mice infected with the mutant. This study shows that B. abortus infection produces a mild proinflammatory response in murine lungs, partially due to immune modulation by its Btp proteins. This may facilitate its survival and dissemination to peripheral organs.Fil: Hielpos, María Soledad. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
