Guidance on Generating Hydrologic Model Input from a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) Using a Curvature Based Filtering Technique to Extract TIN Vertices from Gridded Digital Elevation Models
Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/Extracting input data for hydrologic modeling from triangulated irregular networks (TIN's) is studied. A technique is analyzed that selects points from gridded elevation data for TIN vertices. Elevation points in the grid are filtered out based upon a user defined threshold, with data removal ranging between 20 and 95 percent. Guidance is provided on appropriate filtering thresholds when input data for hydrologic modeling are extracted from the TIN's. The following procedure was used: (A.) Gridded elevation data for three watersheds representing different terrains were filtered at several thresholds and TIN's were generated from the filtered data. (B.) Watershed geometric parameters were computed from the TIN's, and parameter differences vrsus the amount of data filtered were determined. (C.) The geometric parameters were used as input for HEC-1, and differences in hydrographs versus the amount of data fitered were documented. Removal of approximately 80 percent of the elevation grid points showed no significant changes in discharge hydrographs
Demographics and Poverty Spending Attitudes in the Mississippi Poll: 2004-2014
The plight of the poor has played a role in America’s politics for decades. In the 1930’s, Franklin Roosevelt’s Democratic Party vowed to fight the Great Depression, and by implementing countless anti-poverty initiatives and agencies it won enormous favor with the public and ushered in a period of Democratic dominance. In modern politics, narratives surrounding the poor and programs designed to help them are utilized by Republicans and Democrats to further their party’s agenda. I examine the influence of various demographic factors on the attitudes of Mississippi residents towards spending by the government intended to alleviate poverty, using the Mississippi Poll’s results from the years 2004-2014 as my dataset and using cross-tabulation analyses to draw conclusions. I find that gender and religiosity are relatively weak predictors of poverty spending attitudes, while income, education, and age are stronger predictors, and race and party identification are very strong predictors
An Automated System for Hopper Dredge Monitoring
Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/The installation, testing, and analysis of data from an automated monitoring system aboard a contract hopper dredge is detailed in this report. The automated dredge monitoring system consists of sensors to monitor the dredge displacement, volume of material in the hopper, velocity and density of material in the drag arms, drag arm depth, and vessel position, as well as a data acquisition system to store and manage the information. The data are recorded continuously during two dredging projects performed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Detailed analysis of the data is performed to determine the bin measure production and overflow efficiency during the two projects. A detailed uncertainty analysis is also performed
Comparison of Potential Runoff Reduction for Various Nonstructural Watershed Management Approaches
Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/The Scientific Assessment and Strategy Team (SAST) was formed by direction of the White House to provide technical guidance on recovery efforts and future floodplain management issues in the upper Mississippi River basin as a result of the unprecedented flooding that occurred there during the spring and summer of 1993. The SAST conducted a series of watershed modeling studies to analyze the potential reduction in peak runoff for various nonstructural watershed management practices. The results of those studies are summarized. In addition to the potential peak flow reductions, the potential reductions in total runoff volume are compared for various nonstructural watershed management approaches. Those approaches include maximization of infiltration through land management changes, maximization of wetland storage, and installation of small flood prevention structures to temporarily store water. The watershed management practices, watershed modeling studies, and potential reductions in surface runoff are detailed
A Comparison of Methods to Reduce Potential Peak Flow on the West Fork Cedar River Watershed, Iowa
Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/The Scientific Assessment and Strategy Team (SAST) was formed by direction of the White House to provide technical guidance on recovery efforts and future floodplain management issues in the Upper Mississippi River Basin as a result of the unprecedented flooding that occurred during the spring and summer of 1993. In support of the SAST efforts, several watershed modeling studies were conducted to analyze the potential for reducing peak flow via several nonstructural watershed management approaches. This report summarizes the study that was conducted on the West Fork Cedar River Watershed in Iowa. The watershed was modeled using HEC-1, and the effects of various watershed management scenarios were tested with the model. Results which indicate the estimated potential reduction in peak flow due to those watershed management approaches are summarized
