Algumas Notas mais sobre Ivanhoe no Romantismo Português: (em torno de Alfredo Possolo Hogan - e com uma hipótese sobre o Frei Luís de Sousa de Garrett)

Em estudos anteriores, procurámos demonstrar a especial relevância do romance de Walter Scott Ivanhoe (traduzido em 1837, 1838 e 1851) para a ficção histórica do Romantismo português, pondo em evidência o apreço que por essa narrativa tinham os nossos escritores de meados do século XIX e a circulação na sua escrita de motivos temáticos e diegéticos radicáveis naquela obra de Scott; e ocupámo-nos, por outro lado, de examinar o modo como a intriga de Ivanhoe foi levada à cena numa adaptação assinada por Alfredo Possolo Hogan em 1849, com significativas modulações de personagens, situações e temas. Retomando e aprofundando essas investigações, o presente artigo ensaiará cruzá-las, prestando atenção ao quadrilátero formado, no contexto do nosso Romantismo, por romance histórico original, romance histórico traduzido, drama histórico original e drama histórico traduzido.In previous studies I have sought to evince the specific relevance of Walter Scotts Ivanhoe (translated in 1837, 1838 and 1851) for the Portuguese historical novel of the Romantic Period, by highlighting the esteem in which that particular novel was held in the mid-1800s and the circulation in writings by Portuguese authors of thematic and narrative motifs that may have been derived therefrom; and I have additionally examined the ways in which Ivanhoe was adapted for the stage by Alfredo Possolo Hogan in 1849, with significant modulations of characters, situations and themes. This article attempts to combine such earlier approaches by exploring the quadrilateral formed by original historical novel, translated historical novel, original historical drama and translated historical drama in the context of Portuguese Romanticism

W. B. Yeats e a Tradição Romântica do Poema Reflexivo

This paper is intended to establish a relationship between certain traits of the poetry of Yeats and the Romantic tradition of reflexive poetry, in its overall structure and matter as well as in some aspects of its characteristic symbolism. Yeats´s "A Prayer for My Daughter" and Coleridge´s "Frost at Midnight" are taken as instances of this relationship. As a result, a major focus is placed on the subject´s introspective quest for the poetic faculty and identity itself, on mortality, and on the child as a being capable of carrying on the quest success-fully

Identidade humana e mitos das origens no universo da utopia e da distopia

Durante a sua estada no país dos cavalos racionais, o protagonista de As Viagens de Gulliver encara com repugnância uma raça de seres bestiais, violentos, cúpidos e lascivos, que a custo reconhece como seres humanos. Segundo a lenda que corre entre os Houyhnhnms, essas criaturas abomináveis, os Yahoos, surgiram um dia sob a forma de um casal, quais Adão e Eva grotescos, multiplicando-se até constituírem uma verdadeira praga, que importa extinguir. Obra de larga ressonância internacional, a narrativa de Jonathan Swift contém uma expressão extrema de um sentimento de misantropia que, derivado ou não da insanidade do herói, chama a atenção para o vínculo do imaginário utópico à ideia da perfectibilidade humana e levanta o problema da vida como condição que carece de ser merecida - afigurando-se, porventura, legítimo votar ao extermínio os corruptos ineducáveis. Mais, o relato swiftiano articula a problemática moral com a problemática ontológica: que grau ou tipo de sim-patia pode ou deve existir entre os seres humanos, numa perspetiva universal ou universalista, em correlação com a diversidade das conformações culturais ou civilizacionais, e que identidade humana se deteta por intermédio dessa mesma sim-patia? Ao longo dos séculos, o imaginário utópico ocidental tem equacionado esses problemas, dominantemente sob o ângulo de uma fraternidade a construir, muitas vezes associada ao advento de um apocalipse no horizonte da distopia e da ficção científica. O presente texto debruçar-se-á sobre um aspeto particular do tema, explorando algumas instanciações da consciência da fraternidade universal expressa não em ideações do futuro, mas em mitos das origens.During his stay in the country of rational horses, the protagonist of Gulliver's Travels faces with disgust a race of bestial, violent, domineering, and lustful beings, which he recognizes as human. According to the legend that runs among the Houyhnhnms, these abominable creatures, the Yahoos, appeared one day in the form of a couple, like a grotesque Adam and Eve, which multiplied until they were a real plague that had to be extinguished. A work of wide international resonance, Jonathan Swift's narrative contains an extreme expression of a feeling of misanthropy that, whether or not derived from the hero's insanity, draws attention to the link of the utopian imaginary to the idea of human perfectibility and raises the problem of life as a condition that needs to be deserved - it seems legitimate to condemn the corrupt and ineducable to extermination. Furthermore, the Swiftian account articulates the moral and the ontological dimensions: what degree or type of affection can or should exist between human beings, in a universal or universalist perspective, in correlation with the diversity of cultural or civilizational conformations, and which human identity is identified through this same empathy? Over the centuries, the Western utopian imaginary has addressed these problems, predominantly from the perspective of a fraternity to be built, often associated with the advent of an apocalypse on the horizon of dystopia and science fiction. This text will focus on an aspect of the topic, exploring some instances of the consciousness of universal brotherhood expressed, not in ideas of the future, but in myths of origins

Recepção da obra de Milton em Portugal : algumas achegas (I)

The present article attempts to make four points regarding the reception of the work of John Milton in Portuguese literary culture: (a) as a matter of introduction, it highlights the range of critical issues involved in Portuguese editions / translations of Milton, and stresses the relevance of his work in the conspectus of Anglo-Portuguese literary connections; (b) it surveys a number of references made by José Agostinho de Macedo to Milton and other British authors; (c) it examines a review of António José de Lima Leitão's 1840 trans-lation of Paradise Lost published in the Lisbon magazine O Ramalheteby Francisco António Martins Bastos; (d) it poses a question regard-ing the possible catholicization of Milton's work in its Portuguese receptio

Nas raízes do jornalismo literário: números escolhidos de 'The Spectator' (Londres, 1711-1714), seleção, tradução e aparato crítico

Procede-se à apresentação de um conjunto seleccionado de artigos do periódico The Spectator (Londres, 1711-1714), da autoria de Joseph Addison e Richard Steele, em tradução portuguesa. A introdução frisa a im-portância destes artigos no desenvolvimento da forma do ensaio periodístico e caracteriza-os nalguns dos seus aspectos principais, como sejam a criação de personagens e o uso de máscaras, o objectivo de formar (o gosto, o carácter, a conduta) mais do que informar, o distanciamento estabelecido relativamente a compro-metimentos político-partidários, a presença de ensaios críticos sobre a literatura e outras artes, e a relação do periódico com a cultura literária do Classicismo.A selection of articles by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele from the periodical The Spectator (London, 1711-1714) is here presented in Portuguese translation. The introduction stresses the importance of these essays for the development of the form of the periodical essay and describes some of their main features, such as the creation of characters and the use of masks, the aim of shaping taste, character and conduct more than providing news, the refusal of partisan commitments, the presence of critical essays on literature and other arts, and the relationship between this periodical and the literary culture of Classicism
