New insights into the fossil record of the turtle genus Chelus Duméril, 1806 including new specimens with information on cervicals and limb bones
Matamata turtles (Chelus Duméril, 1806) are composed of two extant species, Chelus fimbriata Schneider, 1783 and Chelus orinocensis Vargas-Ramírez, Caballero, Morales-Betancourt, Lasso, Amaya, Martínez, Silva-Viana, Vogt, Farias, Hrbek, Campbell & Fritz, 2020, inhabitants of the main freshwater drainages of northern South America. The systematics and palaeobiogeography of Chelus is still unresolved. Here, we describe several new fossil specimens from the Late Miocene of Urumaco (Venezuela) and Tatacoa (Colombia). The fossils are mostly complete, articulated shells that allow reestablishing validity of two extinct taxa, Chelus colombiana Wood, 1976 and Chelus lewisi Wood, 1976. One of the specimens of C. lewisi from Urumaco represents the first record within the genus for which autopodial bones (a left manus) and additional limb bones are preserved together with ashell, demonstrating evolutionary conservatism in limb anatomy for the genus. The specimen comes from the Socorro Formation, representing the earliest so far known record of Chelus for the Urumaco sequence. Additionally, one specimen from Tatacoa is the first fossil for which cervical and pectoral girdle elements are preserved. Phylogenetic analysis supports the existence of two separate clades inside of Chelus, one formed by the extinct species and the other by the extant ones
An experimental study was carried out using

Simulating a distillation column represents an interesting problem because of the complex dynamics of the system, the thermodynamic interactions in each tray, and the interaction between internal and external currents. This paper evaluates the operation and simulation of a continuous distillation tower (CDT) and a discontinuous distillation tower (DDT). Such simulation was performed using the McCabe–Thiele and rigorous methods as well as the Forero-Velazquez-Huron-Vidal (FVHV) modified cubic state equation (first proposed by Peng–Robinson) and the No-Random-Two-Liquid (NRTL) activity model. The simulation predicted the composition of the distillate and the bottoms, the number of trays, and the feeding stage. The continuous distillation tower had 9 actual equilibrium trays; but the FVHV equation calculated 8 trays; and the NRTL model, 9. With both models, we found that the optimal number of feeding trays was 7. In the case of the DDT, we carried out two tests (with and without ®™ type packaging). The FVHV equation offers many advantages since all the parameters of pure substances are generalized in terms of thermodynamic properties at the critical point, and it rightly represents polar as well as non-polar substances. Nevertheless, the equation NRTL presented a better fit with the composition of distillate, but, regarding its volume, no model represented the experimental trend. A Microsoft Excel® add-in called ® was used to solve the system of equations, and Euler’s was implemented as an iterative method to solve the equations in the discontinuous distillation tower.
The Route to Water Security for Texas: The 2015–2016 Texas Water Roadmap Forums
Three forums were held between February 2015 and November 2016, bringing together Texas water experts from business, industry, government, academia, research, and the investment community in impartially facilitated sessions to deter-mine ways to secure Texas’ water future through accelerating growth of infrastructure, technologies, research, education, and sustainable use. Consensus emerged after the first forum that Texas is approaching a water crisis reflecting matters of supply, allocation, and quality that demands immediate action to ensure water security and equitable access to this vital resource. Participant focus rested on new technology acceleration and investment, workforce education, research underway and desired by segments of the water sector, the water-energy-food nexus, outreach and public education, data management and access, water valuation, water security, and legal and regulatory frameworks. Participants also examined funding and partnership options for development of water treatment and supply infrastructure, water rights and allocation methods, aging infrastructure, and conservation, as well as the nearly ubiquitous fragmenting and compartmentalizing of just about everything having to do with water throughout the entire water sector. The forums generated and summarized a wealth of information that can be used by any party to make progress toward the goal of building a Texas water roadmap. This report summarizes the discussions and the path forward for securing Texas’ water resources

Effect of Feeding Selenium-Fertilized Alfalfa Hay on Performance of Weaned Beef Calves
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient in cattle, and Se-deficiency can affect morbidity and mortality. Calves may have greater Se requirements during periods of stress, such as during the transitional period between weaning and movement to a feedlot. Previously, we showed that feeding Se-fertilized forage increases whole-blood (WB) Se concentrations in mature beef cows. Our current objective was to test whether feeding Se-fertilized forage increases WB-Se concentrations and performance in weaned beef calves. Recently weaned beef calves (n = 60) were blocked by body weight, randomly assigned to 4 groups, and fed an alfalfa hay based diet for 7 wk, which was harvested from fields fertilized with sodium-selenate at a rate of 0, 22.5, 45.0, or 89.9 g Se/ha. Blood samples were collected weekly and analyzed for WB-Se concentrations. Body weight and health status of calves were monitored during the 7-wk feeding trial. Increasing application rates of Se fertilizer resulted in increased alfalfa hay Se content for that cutting of alfalfa (0.07, 0.95, 1.55, 3.26 mg Se/kg dry matter for Se application rates of 0, 22.5, 45.0, or 89.9 g Se/ha, respectively). Feeding Se-fertilized alfalfa hay during the 7-wk preconditioning period increased WB-Se concentrations (P[subscript Linear] < 0.001) and body weights (P[subscript Linear] = 0.002) depending upon the Se-application rate. Based upon our results we suggest that soil-Se fertilization is a potential management tool to improve Se-status and performance in weaned calves in areas with low soil-Se concentrations
