    Improving Noise Robustness in Subspace-based Joint Sparse Recovery

    In a multiple measurement vector problem (MMV), where multiple signals share a common sparse support and are sampled by a common sensing matrix, we can expect joint sparsity to enable a further reduction in the number of required measurements. While a diversity gain from joint sparsity had been demonstrated earlier in the case of a convex relaxation method using an l1/l2l_1/l_2 mixed norm penalty, only recently was it shown that similar diversity gain can be achieved by greedy algorithms if we combine greedy steps with a MUSIC-like subspace criterion. However, the main limitation of these hybrid algorithms is that they often require a large number of snapshots or a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for an accurate subspace as well as partial support estimation. One of the main contributions of this work is to show that the noise robustness of these algorithms can be significantly improved by allowing sequential subspace estimation and support filtering, even when the number of snapshots is insufficient. Numerical simulations show that a novel sequential compressive MUSIC (sequential CS-MUSIC) that combines the sequential subspace estimation and support filtering steps significantly outperforms the existing greedy algorithms and is quite comparable with computationally expensive state-of-art algorithms

    A rare case of primary malignant small cell carcinoma combined with urothelial cell carcinoma in the ureter

    BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary small cell carcinomas have been reported in a variety of organs, and their incidence in the genitourinary tract is second only to that in the gastrointestinal tract. To date, however, only a few cases of small cell carcinoma of the ureter have been reported. Because the extreme rarity of this type of carcinoma, its clinical behaviour, diagnostic methods, and effective treatment modalities have not yet been determined. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of painless gross haematuria. Urine cytopathology revealed a urothelial carcinoma and computed tomography revealed left hydronephroureterosis with a distal ureteral stone and a mildly enhanced fungating mass just below the stone-impacted site. The preoperative TNM stage was T2N0M0. The patient underwent simultaneous diagnostic ureterorenoscopy and left laparoscopic nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff resection. Gross examination showed a 3.5 × 3.0 × 0.8 cm white, partly yellow mass in the left distal ureter. Light microscopy showed a small cell carcinoma, overlaid on a urothelial carcinoma in situ, invading the ureter and external lateral resection margins. The small cell carcinoma was diffusely positive for neuron-specific enolase, and exhibited focal positivity for CD 56, synaptophysin, chromogranin and cytokeratin 20. The patient was treated with adjuvant chemotherapy, consisting of cisplatin and etoposide, and radiation therapy, and has been well, without evidence of tumour recurrence or metastasis in the 10 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: Small cell carcinoma of the ureter is rare. Although its clinical behaviour and diagnostic modalities have not been determined and it has yet to be diagnosed immunohistopathologically, multimodality treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy may improve patient survival

    A Study on the Korean Senior Employment Promotion Project that Influence on the Quality of Participants --Focused on gender difference--

    This study analyzes the Korean senior employment promotion projects influence on the quality of elderly peoples lives. This study is focused on the gender differences, and based on their identification it provides policy implications to use for senior job creation initiatives as a way to promote improved quality of their lives.For this study, university students who were trained about interview techniques from October, 2007 to January, 2008 visited 33 organizations in each of Seoul’s administrative districts including social welfare centers, senior centers, senior employment support centers and community senior clubs. Ten to thirty older people of each organization had face-to-face interviews with the interviewers, resulting in 595 questionnaires collected. After data cleaning, a total of 574 questionnaires were used for this study.SPSS 14.0 was used to conduct data analysis, and many analysis techniques were employed for the analysis: frequency analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis.The study uses regression analysis to find out the influence of variables on quality of life, and found that older men felt happier when they were early on in their retirement years, healthier and they participated in the project for an extended time. On the other hand, older women said they were happier when they were healthier and their job gave them more satisfaction when their job was not for public service or human resource dispatch

    A Study on the Influence on Mental Health of Participants of the Job Creation Project for the Japanese Elderly

    This research aims to analyze the effects on the Subject’s mental health of the Job Creation Project for the elderly in Japan. The subjects of this survey in 2007 were about 1500 participants in the Job Creation Project of Silver Manpower Center in Japan, 970 cases of whom were dataanalyzed.The results of this research are as follows:First, as a result of descriptive statistics of mental health, it was unders food that the average of total mental health is 2.91. As a result of verification of mental health difference, the score of mental health showed significant difference statistically according to job type or motivation of participation, and no significant difference statistically according to satisfaction with job project or duration of participation. With respect to job types, mental health is higher in desk job ormanagement/inspection or technical work than in simple work. Also among the motivations of participation mental health is highest for participation in society than for income.Second, a hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed by including populationsociological properties variables and four subordinate variables of actual conditions of participation in the Job Creation Project for the Elderly in order to analyze the variables which influence the participant mental health. According to the result of analyzing the effects on total mental health, male gender and better physical health condition were seen to have positive effects on total mental health.It is noted that among the motivations of participation, participation in society, and satisfaction with the Job Project, had positive influence

    Serum cytokine profiles in healthy young and elderly population assessed using multiplexed bead-based immunoassays

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lipid metabolites and cytokines, including chemokines and growth factors, are the key regulators of immune cell function and differentiation, and thus, dysregulation of these regulators is associated with various human diseases. However, previous studies demonstrating a positive correlation of cytokine levels with aging may have been influenced by various environmental factors and underlying diseases. Also, data regarding cytokine profiling in the elderly are limited to a small subset of cytokines.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We compared the profiles of 22 cytokines, including chemokines and growth factors, in a case-controlled study group of a gender-matched, healthy cohort of 55 patients over the age of 65 and 55 patients under the age of 45. Assessment of serum cytokine concentrations was performed using commercially-available multiplex bead-based sandwich immunoassays.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-α) levels were significantly higher in the elderly patients, whereas granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), granulocyte-monocyte colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels were significantly lower in the elderly patients. The partial correlation analysis demonstrating the correlation between cytokine levels when controlled for gender, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and serum creatinine levels further demonstrated that G-CSF, GM-CSF, and MCP-1 had significant negative correlations with age, whereas sCD40L and TGF-α had significant positive correlations.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Future studies will focus on examining the significance of these age-related changes in circulating cytokines and other biological markers and their potential contribution to the development of different age-associated diseases.</p

    Flexible ultraviolet and ambient light sensor based on nanomaterial network fabricated by using selective and localized wet-chemical reactions

    We report ZnO nanowire- and TiO_2 nanotube-based light sensors on flexible polymer substrates fabricated by localized hydrothermal synthesis and liquid phase deposition (LPD). This method realized simple and cost-effective in situ synthesis and integration of one-dimensional ZnO and TiO_2 nanomaterials. The fabricated sensor devices with ZnO nanowires and TiO_2 nanotubes show very high sensitivity and quick response to the ultraviolet (UV) and ambient light, respectively. In addition, our direct synthesis and integration method result in mechanical robustness under external loading such as static and cyclic bending because of the strong bonding between the nanomaterial and the electrode. By controlling the reaction time of the LPD process, the Ti/Zn ratio could be simply modulated and the spectral sensitivity to the light in the UV to visible range could be controlled

    The Antioxidant Activity and Their Major Antioxidant Compounds from Acanthopanax senticosus and A. koreanum

    The antioxidant activity and chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid contents were investigated from different parts of Acanthopanax senticosus and A. koreanum. Antioxidant activity was assessed by various in vitro assays such as DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, reducing power assays and ORAC, and the chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid were validated by HPLC chromatography. Among the various extracts, the fruit extracts of A. senticosus and A. koreanum exhibited strongest antioxidant activities including ABTS, FRAP, reducing power and ORAC, however, strongest DPPH radical scavenging activity was observed from the leaf extract of A. senticosus. In addition, the antioxidant activities of various extracts were correlated with total phenolic and proanthocyanidin contents. The major phenolic contents from various parts of these plants observed that leaf extract of A. senticosus expressed higher levels of chlorogenic acid (14.86 mg/dry weigh g) and caffeic acid (3.09 mg/dry weigh g) than other parts. Therefore, these results suggest that the leaf of A. senticosus may be an excellent natural source for functional foods and pharmaceutical agents, and the validated method was useful for the quality control of A. senticosus
