The design and development of a constant-speed solar array drive
The design and development of a constant-speed solar array drive system for use in high power communications satellites is described. The relationship between continuity of motion in the solar array drive and spacecraft attitude disturbance is investigated. The selection of the system design based on the design requirements including spacecraft disturbance is discussed. The system comprises two main parts: the drive mechanism including small angle stepper motor and reduction gearing and the control electronics including ministepping drive circuits, such that a very small output step size is achieved. Factors contributing to discontinuities in motion are identified and discussed. Test methods for measurement of very small amplitudes of discontinuity at low rotational rates are described to assist in the testing of similar mechanisms
Measurement of the dynamic response of the CERN DC spark system and preliminary estimates of the breakdown turn-on time
The new High Repetition Rate (HRR) CERN DC Spark System has been used to
investigate the current and voltage time structure of a breakdown. Simulations
indicate that vacuum breakdowns develop on ns timescales or even less. An
experimental benchmark for this timescale is critical for comparison to
simulations. The fast rise time of breakdown may provide some explanation of
the particularly high gradients achieved by low group velocity, and narrow
bandwidth, accelerating structures such as the T18 and T24. Voltage and current
measurements made with the previous system indicated that the transient
responses measured were dominated by the inherent capacitances and inductances
of the DC spark system itself. The bandwidth limitations of the HRR system are
far less severe allowing rise times of approximately 12ns to be measured

A polymer coated cicaprost-eluting stent increases neointima formation and impairs vessel function in the rabbit iliac artery
Drug-eluting stents have been successful in reducing in-stent restenosis but are not suitable for all lesion types and have been implicated in causing late stent thrombosis due to incomplete regeneration of the endothelial cell layer. In this study we implanted stents coated with cicaprost, a prostacyclin analogue with a long plasma half-life and antiproliferative effects on vascular smooth muscle cells, into the iliac arteries of rabbits. At 28-day follow-up we compared neointima formation within the stented vessels and vascular function in adjacent vessels, to assess if cicaprost could reduce restenosis without impairing vessel function. Arteries implanted with cicaprost eluting stents had significantly more neointima compared to bare metal stents. In adjacent segments of artery, endothelium-dependent relaxation was impaired by the cicaprost-eluting stent but vasodilation to an endothelium-independent vasodilator was maintained. We conclude that the presence of the polymer and sub-optimal release of cicaprost from the stent may be responsible for the increased neointma and impaired functional recovery of the endothelium observed. Further experiments should be aimed at optimising release of cicaprost and exploring different stent polymer coatings
The post-common-envelope, binary central star of the planetary nebula Hen 2-11
We present a detailed photometric study of the central star system of the
planetary nebula Hen 2-11, selected for study because of its low-ionisation
filaments and bipolar morphology - traits which have been strongly linked with
central star binarity. Photometric monitoring with NTT-EFOSC2 reveals a highly
irradiated, double-eclipsing, post-common-envelope system with a period of
0.609 d. Modelling of the lightcurve indicates that the nebular progenitor is
extremely hot, while the secondary in the system is probably a K-type main
sequence star. The chemical composition of the nebula is analysed, showing Hen
2-11 to be a medium-excitation non-Type I nebula. A simple photoionisation
model is constructed determining abundance ratios of C/O and N/O which would be
consistent with the common-envelope cutting short the AGB evolution of the
nebular progenitor.
The detection of a post-common-envelope binary system at the heart of Hen
2-11 further strengthens the link between binary progeny and the formation of
axisymmetric planetary nebulae with patterns of low-ionisation filaments,
clearly demonstrating their use as morphological indicators of central star

SITE-SPECIFIC VERSUS WHOLE-FIELD FERTILITY AND LIME MANAGEMENT IN MICHIGAN SOYBEANS AND CORN
Prior research into variable-rate application (VRA) of fertilizer nutrients has found profitability to be lacking in single nutrient applications to U.S. cereal crops. This study examines the yield and cost effects of VRA phosphorus, potassium and lime application on Michigan corn and soybean farm fields in 1998-2001. After four years, we found no yield gain from site-specific management, but statistically significant added costs, resulting in no gain in profitability. Contrary to results elsewhere, there was no evidence of enhanced spatial yield stability due to site-specific fertility management. Likewise, there was no evidence of decreased variability of phosphorus, potassium or lime after VRA treatment. Site-specific response functions and yield goals might also enhance the likelihood of profitable VRA in the future.Crop Production/Industries,
Beam Dynamics Studies for the SCREX-ISOLDE LINAC at CERN
For the REX-ISOLDE upgrade a superconducting linac
based on 101.28MHz Quarter Wave Resonators (QWRs) is
foreseen downstream of the normal conducting (NC) linac.
Currently the REX-ISOLDE linac can accelerate ions with
a mass to charge ratio in the range of 3 < A/q < 4.5 up to
an energy of 2.8 MeV/u. The upgrade aims to reach a minimum
final beam energy of 10 MeV/u for A/q=4.5 in two main stages. The first stage consists of installing two cryomodules loaded with 10 cavities able to reach 5.5 MeV/u
at the end of the present linac and the second consists of
replacing part of the existing NC linac and adding further
cryomodules. We report here on a beam dynamics study of

The planetary nebula IC 4776 and its post-common-envelope binary central star
We present a detailed analysis of IC 4776, a planetary nebula displaying a
morphology believed to be typical of central star binarity. The nebula is shown
to comprise a compact hourglass-shaped central region and a pair of precessing
jet-like structures. Time-resolved spectroscopy of its central star reveals
periodic radial velocity variability consistent with a binary system. While the
data are insufficient to accurately determine the parameters of the binary, the
most likely solutions indicate that the secondary is probably a low-mass main
sequence star. An empirical analysis of the chemical abundances in IC 4776
indicates that the common-envelope phase may have cut short the AGB evolution
of the progenitor. Abundances calculated from recombination lines are found to
be discrepant by a factor of approximately two relative to those calculated
using collisionally excited lines, suggesting a possible correlation between
low abundance discrepancy factors and intermediate-period post-common-envelope
central stars and/or Wolf-Rayet central stars. The detection of a radial
velocity variability associated with binarity in the central star of IC 4776
may be indicative of a significant population of (intermediate-period)
post-common-envelope binary central stars which would be undetected by classic

A beam dynamics study of a lattice design comprising SC QWRs and SC solenoids has confirmed the designâs ability to accelerate ions, with a mass-to-charge ratio in the range 2.5 < A/q < 4.5, to the target energy with a minimal emittance increase. We report on the development of this study to include the implementation of realistic fields within the QWRs and solenoids.
