Can children withhold consent to treatment
A dilemma exists when a doctor is faced with a child or young person who refuses medically indicated treatment. The Gillick case has been interpreted by many to mean that a child of sufficient age and intelligence could validly consent or refuse consent to treatment. Recent decisions of the Court of Appeal on a child's refusal of medical treatment have clouded the issue and undermined the spirit of the Gillick decision and the Children Act 1989. It is now the case that a child patient whose competence is in doubt will be found rational if he or she accepts the proposal to treat but may be found incompetent if he or she disagrees. Practitioners are alerted to the anomalies now exhibited by the law on the issue of children's consent and refusal. The impact of the decisions from the perspectives of medicine, ethics, and the law are examined. Practitioners should review each case of child care carefully and in cases of doubt seek legal advice
Environments and Morphologies of Red Sequence Galaxies with Residual Star Formation in Massive Clusters
We present a photometric investigation into recent star formation in galaxy
clusters at z ~ 0.1. We use spectral energy distribution templates to quantify
recent star formation in large X-ray selected clusters from the LARCS survey
using matched GALEX NUV photometry. These clusters all have signs of red
sequence galaxy recent star formation (as indicated by blue NUV-R colour),
regardless of cluster morphology and size. A trend in environment is found for
these galaxies, such that they prefer to occupy low density, high cluster
radius environments. The morphology of these UV bright galaxies suggests that
they are in fact red spirals, which we confirm with light curves and Galaxy Zoo
voting percentages as morphological proxies. These UV bright galaxies are
therefore seen to be either truncated spiral galaxies, caught by ram pressure
in falling into the cluster, or high mass spirals, with the photometry

Underwater Engineering Photographic Documentation
For years now the number of underwater structures has been increasing almost as a geometric progression. The complexity of design and construction has increased at an equally impressive rate. Today we are no longer just concerning ourselves with simple towers, pipelines, outfalls, etc., but rather with complex systems such as the Dubai storage tank, sophisticated deep water drilling and production platforms, subsea wellhead completions, undersea collection and separator systems and complex pipeline systems. The engineering design and construction of such structures is rapidly evolving from brute force , cut and try to the science of ocean engineering. Inspection and preventive maintenance of our underwater construction however, have remained in the dark ages. For the most part our inspection programs have been little more than attempts to find and solve problems after the fact and our preventive maintenance programs have been more often than not exemplified by the philosophy of once it\u27s under water, forget it . Bayesian Learning and Predictability in a Stochastic Nonlinear Dynamical Model
Bayesian inference methods are applied within a Bayesian hierarchical
modelling framework to the problems of joint state and parameter estimation,
and of state forecasting. We explore and demonstrate the ideas in the context
of a simple nonlinear marine biogeochemical model. A novel approach is proposed
to the formulation of the stochastic process model, in which ecophysiological
properties of plankton communities are represented by autoregressive stochastic
processes. This approach captures the effects of changes in plankton
communities over time, and it allows the incorporation of literature metadata
on individual species into prior distributions for process model parameters.
The approach is applied to a case study at Ocean Station Papa, using Particle
Markov chain Monte Carlo computational techniques. The results suggest that, by
drawing on objective prior information, it is possible to extract useful
information about model state and a subset of parameters, and even to make
useful long-term forecasts, based on sparse and noisy observations
