The Potential for Growth in Wisconsin Milk Production

Recent reports about the condition of the Wisconsin dairy industry have not been all that good. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), dairy cow numbers in Wisconsin have been steadily dropping over the last few years while total milk production has, at best, held steady or declined modestly. This stability in total milk production, in the face of falling cow numbers, is due largely to increases in the average milk production of those cows that remain in the herd. At first glance one might conclude that the recent trends in the Wisconsin dairy industry are an indication that the state's dairy is destined to shrink. Before one concludes this however, one needs to consider some recent changes that have been going on within the industry which may be a sign that Wisconsin dairy industry may be rebounding and beginning to grow again.

An autonomous rendezvous and docking system using cruise missile technology

German policing at the intersection: race, gender, migrant status and mental health

Germany not only avoids using the term ‘race’, but its institutions, such as the police, refrain from collecting statistics according to race, gender, ethnicity and so on, which makes it hard to prove that police actions, and particularly violence, differentially affect non-white Germans. Examining a series of controversial cases in which non-white Germans have been killed in encounters with the police, the author argues for an understanding of how race and other identities intersect, and shows how the police mount a dubious ‘cultural defence’ – based on their perceived fears – to justify their disproportionate use of force. Deaths in custody provide a lens through which to view the need in Germany to identify and accept the presence of patterns of institutional racism

Suicidal Ideation and Self-injury Prevalence and Impairment in an Urban Integrated Primary Care Clinic

Introduction: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents (Rosenbaum & Ougrin, 2019). Pediatric primary care staff are often the first line of intervention for youth presenting with suicidal thoughts and NSSI (Taliaferro et al., 2013). The primary aim of the current study was to describe reported suicidal ideation, attempts, and NSSI in youth presenting to an urban integrated primary care setting. Methods: Within an outpatient pediatric primary care clinic, patients were referred by medical staff and introduced to behavioral health services. Patients were asked about their history of suicidal thoughts/attempts and NSSI (Mage = 12.63; SD = 4.51; 66.3% female, 66.3% Black; 69.6% Medicaid). Patients were also screened using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC17; Gardner et al., 2007) and Top Problems (Weisz et al., 2001). Results: Seventeen percent of patients endorsed a history of either suicidal ideation/attempts or NSSI. Chi-square analyses identified a significant association between patient race and suicidal ideation/attempts [χ2(6) = 13.56, p = .035]. The sample’s mean internalizing score on the PSC17 fell within the clinical range (M = 6.13, SD = 2.49). Further results reflecting findings, interventions used, and top problem areas will be presented. Conclusion: Results highlight a demand for establishing and sustaining effective screening and engagement in mental health treatment for youth suicidality and self-injury in integrated care settings.
