The Desktop Muon Detector: A simple, physics-motivated machine- and electronics-shop project for university students
This paper describes an undergraduate-level physics project that incorporates
various aspects of machine- and electronics-shop technical development. The
desktop muon detector is a self-contained apparatus that employs plastic
scintillator as a detection medium and a silicon photomultiplier for light
collection. These detectors can be used in conjunction with the provided
software to make interesting physics measurements. The total cost of each

Self-diffusion coefficients of charged particles: Prediction of Nonlinear volume fraction dependence
We report on calculations of the translational and rotational short-time
self-diffusion coefficients and for suspensions of
charge-stabilized colloidal spheres. These diffusion coefficients are affected
by electrostatic forces and many-body hydrodynamic interactions (HI). Our
computations account for both two-body and three-body HI. For strongly charged
particles, we predict interesting nonlinear scaling relations and depending on volume fraction
, with essentially charge-independent parameters and . These
scaling relations are strikingly different from the corresponding results for
hard spheres. Our numerical results can be explained using a model of effective
hard spheres. Moreover, we perceptibly improve the known result for of

Conservation of long-range synteny and microsynteny between the genomes of two distantly related nematodes
BACKGROUND: Comparisons between the genomes of the closely related nematodes Caenorhabditis elegans and Caenorhabditis briggsae reveal high rates of rearrangement, with a bias towards within-chromosome events. To assess whether this pattern is true of nematodes in general, we have used genome sequence to compare two nematode species that last shared a common ancestor approximately 300 million years ago: the model C. elegans and the filarial parasite Brugia malayi. RESULTS: An 83 kb region flanking the gene for Bm-mif-1 (macrophage migration inhibitory factor, a B. malayi homolog of a human cytokine) was sequenced. When compared to the complete genome of C. elegans, evidence for conservation of long-range synteny and microsynteny was found. Potential C. elegans orthologs for II of the 12 protein-coding genes predicted in the B. malayi sequence were identified. Ten of these orthologs were located on chromosome I, with eight clustered in a 2.3 Mb region. While several, relatively local, intrachromosomal rearrangements have occurred, the order, composition, and configuration of two gene clusters, each containing three genes, was conserved. Comparison of B. malayi BAC-end genome survey sequence to C. elegans also revealed a bias towards intrachromosome rearrangements. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that intrachromosomal rearrangement is a major force driving chromosomal organization in nematodes, but is constrained by the interdigitation of functional elements of neighboring genes
Experimental Measurement of Particle Dispersion in Turbulent Flow
The dispersion of particles in turbulent flows, phenomena such as dispersion, diffusion, and sedimentation, and a more fundamental point of view, the description of particle interaction with the turbulent field are recently of increasing interest. A system capable of investigating statistical structure of the motion of particles in a turbulent fluid flow using a turbulent water pipe flow system and particles tagged with C0-60 radioactive pellets has been constructed and tested. The particles were followed in their trajectory by a group of detectors consisting of NaI(Tℓ) crystals mounted on photomultiplier tubes which move with the particles on a movable carriage. From the photomultiplier voltages a time series of particle position and velocity was calculated. Results included Eulerian and convected frame measurements in the underlying fluid field in the pipe, representative measurements from recent experiments with particles, and an analysis of noise and statistical reliability of the results
Brain amyloid in preclinical Alzheimer\u27s disease is associated with increased driving risk
INTRODUCTION: Postmortem studies suggest that fibrillar brain amyloid places people at higher risk for hazardous driving in the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We administered driving questionnaires to 104 older drivers (19 AD, 24 mild cognitive impairment, and 61 cognitive normal) who had a recent (18)F-florbetapir positron emission tomography scan. We examined associations of amyloid standardized uptake value ratios with driving behaviors: traffic violations or accidents in the past 3 years. RESULTS: The frequency of violations or accidents was curvilinear with respect to standardized uptake value ratios, peaking around a value of 1.1 (model r(2) = 0.10, P = .002); moreover, this relationship was evident for the cognitively normal participants. DISCUSSION: We found that driving risk is strongly related to accumulating amyloid on positron emission tomography, and that this trend is evident in the preclinical stage of AD. Brain amyloid burden may in part explain the increased crash risk reported in older adults
The caries experience of 5 year-old children in Scotland in 2013-2014, and in England and Wales in 2014-2015. Reports of cross-sectional dental surveys using BASCD criteria
Objective: We report the findings from and comment on the surveys of the oral health of 5-year-old children undertaken in Scotland
(2013-14), Wales (2014-15) and England (2014-15). This was the fourteenth survey in Scotland since 1988. In England and Wales it is the
third survey since 2007 when changes were required in consent arrangements. Method: Representative samples were drawn within Health
Boards across Scotland and local authorities across England and Wales. Consent was sought via opt-out parental consent in Scotland and
opt-in parental consent in England and Wales. Children examined were those aged five in England and those in Primary 1 (school year
aged 5 to 6) in Scotland and Wales. Examinations were conducted in schools by trained and calibrated examiners. Caries was visually
diagnosed at the dentinal threshold. Results: There is a continuing decline in d3mft in all three countries. d3mft was 1.27 (opt-out consent)
for Scotland, 0.84 for England (opt-in consent) and 1.29 for Wales (opt-in consent). Tooth decay levels remain higher in more deprived
areas across Great Britain, with clear inequalities gradients demonstrated across all geographies. Attempts to measure changes in dental
health inequalities across the three countries show no conclusive trends. Conclusion: Inter-country comparisons provide further oral health
intelligence despite differences in approach and timing. The third surveys in England and Wales using the new consent arrangements
have enabled trend analysis. Dental health inequalities gradients were shown across all geographies and all of the indicators of inequalit
Why Is Supercritical Disk Accretion Feasible?
Although the occurrence of steady supercritical disk accretion onto a black
hole has been speculated about since the 1970s, it has not been accurately
verified so far. For the first time, we previously demonstrated it through
two-dimensional, long-term radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. To clarify why
this accretion is possible, we quantitatively investigate the dynamics of a
simulated supercritical accretion flow with a mass accretion rate of ~10^2
L_E/c^2 (with L_E and c being, respectively, the Eddington luminosity and the
speed of light). We confirm two important mechanisms underlying supercritical
disk accretion flow, as previously claimed, one of which is the radiation
anisotropy arising from the anisotropic density distribution of very optically
thick material. We qualitatively show that despite a very large radiation
energy density, E_0>10^2L_E/(4 pi r^2 c) (with r being the distance from the
black hole), the radiative flux F_0 cE_0/tau could be small due to a large
optical depth, typically tau 10^3, in the disk. Another mechanism is photon
trapping, quantified by vE_0, where v is the flow velocity. With a large |v|
and E_0, this term significantly reduces the radiative flux and even makes it
negative (inward) at r<70r_S, where r_S is the Schwarzschild radius. Due to the
combination of these effects, the radiative force in the direction along the
disk plane is largely attenuated so that the gravitational force barely exceeds
the sum of the radiative force and the centrifugal force. As a result, matter
can slowly fall onto the central black hole mainly along the disk plane with
velocity much less than the free-fall velocity, even though the disk luminosity
exceeds the Eddington luminosity. Along the disk rotation axis, in contrast,

Can majority support save an endangered language? A case study of language attitudes in Guernsey
Many studies of minority language revitalisation focus on the attitudes and perceptions of minorities, but not on those of majority group members. This paper discusses the implications of these issues, and presents research into majority andf minority attitudes towards the endangered indigenous vernacular of Guernsey, Channel Islands. The research used a multi-method approach (questionnaire and interview) to obtain attitudinal data from a representative sample of the population that included politicians and civil servants (209 participants). The findings suggested a shift in language ideology away from the post-second world war ‘culture of modernisation’ and monolingual ideal, towards recognition of the value of a bi/trilingual linguistic heritage. Public opinion in Guernsey now seems to support the maintenance of the indigenous language variety, which has led to a degree of official support. The paper then discusses to what extent this ‘attitude shift’ is reflected in linguistic behaviour and in concrete language planning measures
A feasibility study of signed consent for the collection of patient identifiable information for a national paediatric clinical audit database
Objectives: To investigate the feasibility of obtaining signed consent
for submission of patient identifiable data to a national clinical
audit database and to identify factors influencing the consent process
and its success.
Design: Feasibility study.
Setting: Seven paediatric intensive care units in England.
Participants: Parents/guardians of patients, or patients aged 12-16
years old, approached consecutively over three months for signed
consent for submission of patient identifiable data to the national
clinical audit database the Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network
(PICANet).
Main outcome measures: The numbers and proportions of admissions for
which signed consent was given, refused, or not obtained (form not
returned or form partially completed but not signed), by age, sex,
level of deprivation, ethnicity (South Asian or not), paediatric index
of mortality score, length of hospital stay (days in paediatric
intensive care).
Results: One unit did not start and one did not fully implement the
protocol, so analysis excluded these two units. Consent was obtained
for 182 of 422 admissions (43%) (range by unit 9% to 84%). Most
(101/182; 55%) consents were taken by staff nurses. One refusal (0.2%)
was received. Consent rates were significantly better for children who
were more severely ill on admission and for hospital stays of six days
or more, and significantly poorer for children aged 10-14 years. Long
hospital stays and children aged 10-14 years remained significant in a
stepwise regression model of the factors that were significant in the
univariate model.
Conclusion: Systematically obtaining individual signed consent for
sharing patient identifiable information with an externally located
clinical audit database is difficult. Obtaining such consent is
unlikely to be successful unless additional resources are specifically
allocated to training, staff time, and administrative support
Three-centre cluster structure in 11C and 11B
Studies of the 16O(9Be,alpha 7Be)14C, 7Li(9Be,alpha 7Li)5He and 7Li(9Be,alpha
alpha t)5He reactions at E(beam)=70 and 55 MeV have been performed using
resonant particle spectroscopy techniques. The 11C excited states decaying into
alpha+7Be(gs) are observed between 8.5 and 13.5 MeV. The alpha+7Li(gs),
alpha+7Li*(4.652 MeV) and t+8Be(gs) decays of 11B excited states between 9 and
19 MeV are observed. The decay processes are used to indicate the possible
three-centre 2alpha+3He (2alpha+3H) cluster structure of observed states. This
cluster structure is more prominent in the positive-parity states, where two
rotational bands with large deformations are suggested. Excitations of some of
the observed T=1/2 resonances coincide with the energies of previously measured
T=3/2 isobaric analogs of the 11Be states,indicating that these states may have
