    REGIONAL IMPACT OF URBAN WATER USE ON IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE

    Linear programming and regional input-output models were applied to estimate the impacts of increased pumping costs for irrigated agriculture due to groundwater depletion principally caused by the expanding urban area of San Antonio, Texas. A biophysical simulator was use to estimate linear programming coefficients of crop yield by irrigation level and timing. The results indicated significant local (county) economic impacts from groundwater mining but insignificant regional impacts. A major improvement on irrigation efficiency would be required to offset the increased pumping costs and reduce water availability associated with increased lifts due to urban expansion.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Often academic research is limited in that students are used as surrogates for managers or business professionals. This paper extends earlier student-based research to business professionals to assess information literacy. Specifically, descriptive results concerning mangers’ familiarity level with technology, including the Internet, sources of knowledge about information technology, and the comfort level performing certain technology related tasks are presented

    On the Origin of X-ray Emission From Millisecond Pulsars in 47 Tuc

    The observed spectra and X-ray luminosities of millisecond pulsars in 47 Tuc can be interpreted in the context of theoretical models based on strong, small scale multipole fields on the neutron star surface. For multipole fields that are relatively strong as compared to the large scale dipole field, the emitted X-rays are thermal and likely result from polar cap heating associated with the return current from the polar gap. On the other hand, for weak multipole fields, the emission is nonthermal and results from synchrotron radiation of e±e^{\pm} pairs created by curvature radiation. The X-ray luminosity, LxL_x, is related to the spin down power, LsdL_{sd}, expressed in the form LxLsdβL_x \propto L^{\beta}_{sd} with β0.5\beta \sim 0.5 and 1\sim 1 for strong and weak multipole fields respectively. If the polar cap size is of the order of the length scale of the multipole field, ss and β0.5\beta \sim 0.5, the polar cap temperature is 3×106K(Lsd1034ergs1)1/8(s3×104cm)1/2\sim 3 \times 10^6 K (\frac{L_{sd}}{10^{34}erg s^{-1}})^{1/8} (\frac{s}{3\times 10^4 cm})^{-1/2}. A comparison of the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars in globular clusters and in the Galactic field suggests that the emergence of relatively strong small scale multipole fields from the neutron star interior may be correlated with the age and evolutionary history of the underlying neutron star.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Early diagenesis of plant-derived dissolved organic matter along a wetland, mangrove, estuary ecotone

    We studied the role of photochemical and microbial processes in contributing to the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from various plants that dominate the Florida Everglades. Plant-derived DOM leachate samples were exposed to photochemical and microbial degradation and the optical, chemical, and molecular weight characteristics measured over time. Optical parameters such as the synchronous fluorescence intensity between 270 and 290 nm (Fnpeak I), a strong indicator of protein and/or polyphenol content, decreased exponentially in all plant leachate samples, with microbial decay constants ranging from 21.0 d21 for seagrass to 20.11 d21 for mangrove (half-life [t1/2] 5 0.7–6.3 d). Similar decreases in polyphenol content and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration also occurred but were generally an order of magnitude lower or did not change significantly over time. The initial molecular weight composition was reflected in the rate of Fnpeak I decay and suggests that plantderived DOM with a large proportion of high molecular weight structures, such as seagrass derived DOM, contain high concentrations of easily microbially degradable proteinaceous components. For samples exposed to extended simulated solar radiation, polyphenol and Fnpeak I photochemical decay constants were on average 20.7 d21 (t1/2 1.0 d). Our data suggest that polyphenol structures of plant-derived DOM are particularly sensitive to photolysis, whereas high molecular weight protein-like structures are degraded primarily through physical–chemical and microbial processes. Furthermore, microbial and physical processes initiated the formation of recalcitrant, highly colored high molecular weight polymeric structures in mangrove-derived DOM. Thus, partial, biogeochemical transformation of plant-derived DOM from coastal areas is rapid and is likely to influence carbon and nutrient cycling, especially in areas dominated by seagrass and mangrove forests
