    Symmetries of quasiplatonic Riemann surfaces

We state and prove a corrected version of a theorem of Singerman, which relates the existence of symmetries (anticonformal involutions) of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface S\mathcal S (one uniformised by a normal subgroup NN of finite index in a cocompact triangle group Δ\Delta) to the properties of the group G=Δ/NG=\Delta/N. We give examples to illustrate the revised necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of symmetries, and we relate them to properties of the associated dessins d'enfants, or hypermaps

Science Notes - NSF Sponsors Anthropology Summer Program

Are you interested in an NSF-sponsored anthropology summer program in Nebraska combining one week in the classroom with 11 days of intensive field study? If you are, Trek of the Mammoth could be for you. Classroom study takes place at Chadron State College, while the high plains of Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota provide the setting for field study

The Integration of Research and Teaching Science and Mathematics--a six-week (two weeks each summer) N.S.F. supported program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Contact Professor Max Dresden, Executive Director, Institute for Theoretical Physics When I read this advertisement in the January 1985 issue of the Physics Teacher, I thought it looked interesting so I applied. In May of 1985 I was notified of my acceptance into the program, and then I wondered what I was getting into

Are you interested in an NSF-sponsored oceanography summer program in Massachusetts combining three weeks of intensive study with a two week final exam at sea? If you are, Sea Experience may be the program for you. Classrooms on land are located in a picturesque setting just outside Woods Hole, Massachusetts, while the tall-masted 134-foot S.S.V. Corwith Cramer provides the setting for the final weeks of study

Woodrow Wilson National Science Leadership Program: Princeton, 1989

Gee, Dad, Princeton! Do you realize that Einstein was at Princeton? This is what my son said as I read my acceptance letter from the Woodrow Wilson Institute. I thought of his words as I turned off the highway onto Nassau Avenue in the heart of the Princeton campus. The old ivy-covered buildings interspersed with new modern research facilities are my idea of what a college campus should look like. After finding my dorm and getting settled in, I began to explore and to learn about my colleagues. The group consisted of people from all over the United States, truly a nationwide collection of teachers from New Jersey to Hawaii. Two of us were from Iowa. I was one of fifty teachers assigned to develop the first science course (many times the only science course) that a student would take. The topic we chose was In the Middle of Science. We began to work on developing the new curriculum, which is not an easy task. We broke up into smaller groups of approximately ten teachers and developed, in my opinion, a pretty good course. A lot of compromising occurred as many pet projects and demonstrations simply could not be included because of space considerations

Prospects for Campaign Finance Reform: The Role of Policy Narratives, Cultural Predispositions, and Political Knowledge in Collective Policy Preference Formation

Objective: Although campaign finance is a growing concern, pollsters rarely ask the public about reform. We use the variation in public support for campaign finance reform to determine factors important to collective policy preference formation. Methods: Using a national survey, we factor analyze the latent dimensions of various reforms, and rely on an experimental design to explain the role cultural theory, policy narratives, and political knowledge plays in preference formation. Results: The reform debate groups along two dimensions: adding or removing limitations, or ending the dependence on money altogether. We show policy narratives are most influential, and cultural theory has more explanatory value, among those with higher levels of political knowledge, and policy narratives tend to increase support among those who already support reform, and mitigate the opposition from other cultural types. Conclusion: If it were up to the public, prospects for campaign finance reform, even public financing, would be high

Quantum mutual information of an entangled state propagating through a fast-light medium

Although it is widely accepted that classical information cannot travel faster than the speed of light in vacuum, the behavior of quantum correlations and quantum information propagating through actively-pumped fast-light media has not been studied in detail. To investigate this behavior, we send one half of an entangled state of light through a gain-assisted fast-light medium and detect the remaining quantum correlations. We show that the quantum correlations can be advanced by a small fraction of the correlation time while the entanglement is preserved even in the presence of noise added by phase-insensitive gain. Additionally, although we observe an advance of the peak of the quantum mutual information between the modes, we find that the degradation of the mutual information due to the added noise appears to prevent an advancement of the leading edge. In contrast, we show that both the leading and trailing edges of the mutual information in a slow-light system can be significantly delayed
